AUTHOR'S POV

The atmosphere in the courtroom was thick with anticipation, silence taking over as everyone patiently waited for the judge to give his ruling over the preliminary hearing.

There were only two possible decisions and the judge could only choose one. Either his rule leans on the defending side, meaning the case would be closed and there would be no further hearing. Or…she leans on Katerina’s side, giving her a chance to prove to the judge and the entire world that indeed, Stephanie was behind her Dad's tragic death.

Kate sucked in a tight breath, trying to brace herself for whatever had to come. She gave it her all. She told the court what needed to be told, not leaving any stone unturned. She believes that she did her best to convince the judge and everyone in the court that Stephanie is the real culprit. If it were up to her to make the ruling, she would give the case another chance since she strongly believes that if she's giv

KATERINA I tilted my head to the side, pretending to be deep in thoughts. Slowly, the corner of my lips curved into a big smile.“You can keep the papers since they're of no use to me.” I shrugged without a care in the world. She clenched her hands into tight fists. My words slapping harder than I had envisioned as they sank through her thick skull which thought the whole revolved around her and she deserved everything.I used to share everything. However, this time was different. It was my turn to be mean because being generous didn't earn me anything. Not a single thing.Instead, I lost everything that I held dear to my heart.“You're right. However, I would like to correct because I think you got it all wrong. My Dad left everything under my name. If he wanted you to be part of it, he would have included you. Perhaps he figured out that you’re not worth it.” I laughed, enjoying the conversation because it was getting way too interesting.Perhaps I was the only one enjoying it beca

KATERINA The rest of the drive was silent, and now here we’re. I stared at the tall building ahead of us. The place hadn't charged that much since the last time I visited.Memories of my last visit to the place flashed in my mind, making my heart twist painfully in my chest. I recalled my frail frame, tears pouring down my cheeks as Stephanie watched me from her office, holding a glass of wine as she sipped on it leisurely.I hope Stephanie was enjoying her new life in jail as much as I was enjoying my freedom…The door to my side clicked open and Lucas offered me his hand. I thanked him for being kind and we headed to the tall building, my shoulders high, my face proud to be back. The employees were busy going about their business with no clue they almost lost their livelihoods. The woman who declined to testify in my case because she had been bought by Stephanie for a cheap price to remain silent tensed when our eyes locked as though she had seen a ghost.“Attention!” I said, my vo

KATERINA ONE WEEK LATER Standing before the full-length mirror, I stared at my reflection and the corner of my lips curled into a smile.I wore a red silk dress which fitted me perfectly, not too tight or loose. My hair was pinned into a bun, leaving two hair strands on either side of my face. The nude lipstick and light make-up enhanced my beauty, making every feature on my face stand out.Despite hiding it, I could see the tiredness in those brown hazel eyes that were looking back at me. I blinked a few times hoping it would help…The past week hasn't been easy on me. I had to use every single trick that I have beneath my sleeves. The company was bankrupt and on the verge of falling apart. Stephanie siphoned all the money, leaving the company emptying and bleeding. I had to find a way. Any way that could help it rise on its feet again and…there was only one way.To merge with another company. Since I didn't have many options to choose from, I had only one. To merge the company wit

KATERINA My mind pulled back to the present when the car came to a stop. I looked around and that's when I noticed we had already arrived at Evan's office. Kimani got out of the car, walked to the passenger seat and opened the door for me.I gave him a polite smile, thanking him for being gentle. We were accompanied with two more bodyguards to tighten the security. Even though the enemies were behind the bars, it didn't mean we had to loosen the security.“You can wait for me here. I’ll be fine.” I informed Kimani and he nodded in understanding. Heaving a deep sigh, I proceeded to Lawyer Evan’s office. My heart pounded wildly against my ribcage with each step that I took, feeling nervous. Evan called me early in the morning, telling me that he had some important documents that he needed to hand me._Standing before the brown mahogany door, I released a deep breath then knocked. Evan’s voice came from the other side, asking me to enter. I pushed open the heavy doors and walked insid

LUCASI stared out of the window, not looking at anything in particular because there was nothing to admire anyway. The sky was dark with no hint of brightness, almost gloomy. I took a sip of the amber liquid in my glass, savoring the taste as it burned its way down my gut. It wasn't helping at all. However, it was a great companion late at night. The door to the study clicked open and I didn't need to turn my head to know who had walked in. There were only the two of us living under this roof, the place was too quiet.Andrew joined, giving me that look that made me doubt myself. It's not that often that I drink this late at night. I only did it on rare occasions when I had a lot going on, hoping it would give me some idea to go about everything. At least that is what I hoped.“Just a glass,” I defended, shrugging as though it was nothing to worry about. However, deep down I knew I was lying because it was my third glass and the bottle was halfway finished.I think I was holding up

KATERINA “Asher!” I called in a warning, my voice a little bit sharp and cracky, not the way that I was expecting it to come out though. To be honest, I was expecting the triplets to ask any questions. However, I wasn't expecting one of them to ask such a personal question.Asher frowned innocently, not sure of what he had done wrong. Of course the question that he had asked was wrong. However, I couldn't blame him for asking because I knew it was in the kid's nature to ask random questions.“It's late, kids. The three of you need to go to bed because tomorrow you have school.” I said, brushing off the question that Asher has asked earlier.I said goodnight to the triplets and they bid me goodnight too. It was silent for a while, the air surrounding us so thick as the unanswered question which Asher asked hung in the air. Sucking in the hot air, I turned to Lucas.“Forget about Asher's question earlier. You know how curious kids can get sometimes.” A dismissive chuckle escaped my lip
