The following week almost felt normal.

Almost.

Jack settled back into a routine with Lillian as though he had never left. He woke when she cried, learned which little noises meant she was hungry and which ones meant she simply wanted to be held, and somehow became an expert at changing diapers faster than Lela expected.

Lela teased him about it constantly.

"You've gotten very good at this."

Jack looked down at the clean diaper he had just fastened.

"Military training."

"Changing diapers?"

  • Decisions I made    Home At Last

The phone rang at 7:18 on Monday morning.Lela was already awake. She had barely slept the night before, not because anything was wrong, but because her mind kept returning to the same thought.Maybe today.Maybe today they would finally bring their daughters home.Jack was sitting beside her bed, looking through the latest photographs of Sophia and Isabella. When the phone rang, they both looked at the screen. The neonatal unit.Lela grabbed his hand.“Answer it.”Jack accepted the call.“Good morning. This is Jack Sullivan.”“Good morning, Mr. Sullivan. It's Nurse Melissa. I wanted to let you know that we've had another encouraging night with the girls. The medical team has reviewed their progress, and we'd like to speak with you both this morning about discharge planning.”Lela stopped breathing for a moment.Jack looked at her.“Are you saying they're ready?”“We're preparing for that possibility. The team needs to complete the final assessments and go through the discharge instru

Lela woke to her phone vibrating against the bedside table. She reached for it and squinted at the screen.A message from Paul.Good morning. Lily wants to know if the babies are coming home today. I told her we would ask. Also, your mother is making breakfast. Don't argue with her about eating.Lela smiled. She typed back.Good morning. Tell Lily we're going to see what the doctors say. And tell Mom I promise to eat.A second message arrived almost immediately. She says promises don't count unless you eat the eggs.Lela laughed.Jack stirred in the chair beside her.“What?”“My father is negotiating breakfast.”“Should I be concerned?”“Apparently, I'm not allowed to leave the hospital until I eat eggs.”Jack stretched, rubbing the back of his neck.“Sounds reasonable.”“Traitor.”He grinned and stood, coming to her bedside.“Good morning, beautiful.”“Good morning.”“How are you feeling?”“Pretty good. Tired, but better than yesterday.”He checked that her pillows were positioned co

  • Decisions I made    The First Taste of Home

The first thing Lela heard that morning was Jack laughing. Not the quiet chuckle he sometimes gave when he read something on his phone. Not the tired laugh he used when he was trying to make light of a difficult day.A genuine laugh. She opened one eye and looked toward the chair beside her bed.Jack was sitting with his phone pressed to his ear, his shoulders shaking as he tried to keep his voice down.“No, Paul. I am not installing a security system around the nursery.”A pause.“Because they're babies.”Another pause.“Dad, you cannot put cameras in every corner of the house.”Lela smiled beneath her blanket.Jack glanced over and caught her watching him.He mouthed, Your father. She raised her eyebrows. He turned away again.“No, I don't need motion sensors on the bassinets. I need you to stop shopping online.”Lela started laughing.Jack looked back at her and shook his head.“She's awake,” he told Paul. “I'll call you back.”He ended the call and set his phone down.“Good mornin

  • Decisions I made    The Day Everything Felt Different

Lela woke the next morning to an unfamiliar sound. For several seconds, she couldn't identify it. It was soft and rhythmic, almost like someone tapping a fingernail against glass. She opened her eyes, turned her head toward the window, and realized the rain had returned. Then she noticed Jack wasn't in the chair beside her.Her heart gave a small, instinctive jump before she remembered the conversation they'd had the previous morning. He had promised not to leave her out of important updates, and she had promised to stop assuming that every moment apart meant something was wrong.Still, she reached for her phone. There was a message waiting.Morning, sweetheart. I went to check on the girls while you were sleeping. They had a quiet night, and both are stable. Sophia's feeding is still being monitored, and Isabella is still working on keeping her temperature steady. No emergencies. I wanted you to get some rest. I'll be back in a few minutes, and then we'll go together.Lela read it tw

  • Decisions I made    A Little Closer to Home

The next morning, Lela woke to Jack arguing with a car seat. Not a person.A car seat. She lay still for several seconds, listening to the muffled sounds coming from the corner of the hospital room where he had set up his temporary command center. A rustle of fabric, a frustrated sigh, and then a quiet, deeply offended, “That cannot possibly be right.”Lela slowly opened her eyes.“Jack?”“I'm busy.”She turned her head toward the sound. “Are you talking to me or the car seat?”“The car seat.”“Should I be concerned?”“No.”Another pause.“Possibly.”She began laughing before she had even sat up.Jack appeared around the divider holding his phone in one hand and a set of printed instructions in the other. His hair was a mess, his shirt was wrinkled, and he wore the intensely focused expression of a man who had decided that a piece of baby equipment had personally challenged his intelligence.“Good morning,” he said.“What did the car seat do to you?”“It has too many straps.”“It's a

Rain tapped against the hospital window when Lela opened her eyes. For a few seconds, she lay still, watching the gray morning light spread across the room. Her leg ached, her body felt heavy with exhaustion, and the hospital bed was becoming far too familiar. Then she felt Jack's hand resting over hers, and memories of the past few days rushed back.Sophia and Isabella. Her daughters were here. They were alive, they were being cared for, and they were growing stronger. But they weren't home, and every morning she woke without them felt like waking up in a life that hadn't quite begun.Jack stirred when she moved. He'd fallen asleep in the chair beside her bed again, his neck bent at an uncomfortable angle and the blanket slipping off one shoulder. When he finally opened his eyes, he looked at her before checking the clock.“Good morning,” he murmured.Lela glanced toward the window. “Is it?”His mouth twitched. “It's raining. I figured that meant you'd have something to complain abou

  • Decisions I made    Questions

"Where is Jack taking you for dinner?" Mom asked as we walked toward the mall entrance.I smiled."Pier W."Mom stopped so fast I nearly walked right into her."What?"I laughed."Pier W."She just stood there staring at me."The Pier W?""Yes, Mom."For a moment she didn't say anything. Then she g

Friday morning arrived much earlier than I would have liked. My alarm went off at six, and for a few seconds I just lay there staring at the ceiling. The events of the night before slowly came back to me.Dinner with Mom and Dad.The interrogation. The shopping trip I had somehow been volunteered f

  • Decisions I made    Dinner with my parents

"Okay," Dad said as he leaned back in his chair. "Let's talk about this Jack guy."I groaned."Do we have to?""Absolutely."Mom laughed."We definitely have to."I shook my head."There's really not much to tell."Dad pointed at me."Start with what you know."I thought about it for a moment."Wel

  • Decisions I made    Thursday Night

Thursday nights were usually predictable. Chris would have another dinner meeting with clients, another networking event, or another reason he couldn't be home. Over the years, I had stopped asking questions. Sometimes the meetings were legitimate, sometimes they weren't, and sometimes I simply did
