Chapter 4

Author: Big Doll
"This way, everyone will know we're a family. We'll never be apart."

I didn't say anything, but Penelope took my hand and placed it on her stomach.

"Milton, I'm pregnant again. Hughie's going to have a little brother. From now on, there'll be one more person in this family who loves you."

"Yay!" Hughie chimed in happily from the side. "I'll finally have someone to play with. I won't be bored every day anymore!"

I looked at their happy faces, and the anger in my chest nearly boiled over.

They kept saying they loved me, but they betrayed me. And now, they expected me to raise a child she had with another man?

What did I ever do to deserve this?

When Penelope saw me sitting there in silence, my expression dark, her smile faded. She used sign language to repeat what she had just said.

I almost forgot she still didn't know I could hear again.

I looked at her without any expression, my voice cold to the bone.

"Are you sure this child is mine, and not someone else's?"

Panic flickered across Penelope's face. She quickly forced a smile. "What are you talking about? How could it be someone else's?"

"Daddy, how can you doubt Mommy? I'm angry at you now!" Hughie snapped angrily.

Before he could finish, his gestures were cut off by a ringing phone.

Penelope stepped aside. It only took a moment, but when she came back, her face was full of apology.

"I'm sorry. Something came up at work, and I need to handle it."

She looked at Hughie, who immediately said, "Mommy, I'll go with you."

With that, Penelope grabbed Hughie's hand and left in a hurry.

As she turned away, I caught a glimpse of the caller ID on her phone. It was Darren.

I stood up expressionlessly, then took the charm bracelet off my wrist, tossed it into the trash, and walked outside.

Since she cared so much about Darren, I would make room for him.

From now on, the four of them could live their happy family life together.

Over the next few days, Penelope and Hughie didn't show up at all.

They only came back occasionally, their faces etched with exhaustion. They moved around cautiously, like they didn't want me to notice.

But I didn't bother asking anything. I acted like a truly deaf man.

Meanwhile, news about Darren never stopped coming.

Sometimes, it was Hughie riding around town with him in a brand new car.

Sometimes, it was Penelope cooking meals for him personally.

Everything pointed to just how much love they poured onto Darren.

And under his posts online, the comments were full of teasing and congratulations.

Meanwhile, I stayed home, busy erasing everything connected to me.

On day one, Darren posted on social media photos of Penelope taking Hughie to watch fireworks with him at an amusement park.

I took out every photo in the house that included Penelope and Hughie, tore them up, and burned them to ash.

On day two, Darren posted pictures of Penelope and Hughie setting up a sea of flowers for him by hand.

I hired workers and had the greenhouse behind the house, which they had built for me, completely torn down.

On the final day, Darren posted a photo of himself holding Hughie, both of them pressing their ears against Penelope's belly.

I finished packing all my luggage and was just about to leave when I saw Penelope, who hadn't been home in a long time, standing at the door with Hughie.

Her eyes were bloodshot. She was gripping a document in her hand, looking tense.

"Milton, this document says you're going to Lumora as a volunteer teacher. Is that true?"

Hughie hugged my leg tightly and cried, "Daddy, don't go! Please don't go!"For a moment, I didn't know what to do. I let out a sigh.Just then, Aisla stepped forward."If he doesn't love you anymore, why are you clinging to him like this? Besides, he already has a new girlfriend. No matter how much you keep bothering him, it's pointless."Hearing that, Penelope and Hughie both turned to look at Aisla, hostility flashing in their eyes.Aisla froze for a second, then swallowed hard, straightened her back, and said, "What are you staring at? I'm his girlfriend. You've got a problem with that?"Penelope burst out laughing, her eyes full of mockery as she looked at Aisla."Do you even know who he is? He's my husband…"Before Penelope could finish, Aisla's clear voice rang through the entire classroom."He's Milton Peters, spelt M-I-L-T-O-N P-E-T-E-R-S!"Seeing the tension and stubborn resolve in Aisla's eyes, I couldn't help laughing softly.Penelope's expression changed. As if

"The place where you cheated, just one wall away? That house that never truly belonged to me? You keep saying you love me, but when you were cheating, did you ever think about me? Did you ever think about the promise we made back then?" I snapped. Then, I turned to Hughie."And you. When you helped your mommy cheat, did you ever think about the fact that I was your daddy?"Under my unblinking stare, Penelope and Hughie couldn't say a single word.Penelope kept shaking her head, tears spinning in her eyes. Hughie was already crying hard. But looking at them, I felt no pity at all.If anything, it felt even more ridiculous. They had done everything they shouldn't have, and now they were putting on this pitiful act, begging for forgiveness? So did that mean I could openly cheat, too, and that as long as I said I was sorry afterward, everything would be wiped clean?"No, it's not like that!" Hughie cried. "Mommy really, really loves you. I love you, too. Can you please forgive Mom

Life in the city was already so much better than most. What did we really have to complain about? Before I could think any further, Aisla's voice rang out beside me again."Don't worry. No matter what happens, I'll protect you," she said. When I looked at her, the determination in her eyes only grew stronger.Seeing that, I could only smile and gently pat her on the head.Maybe staying here really was a good decision. At the very least, the people here were sincere. They wouldn't lie to me.But that very day, while I was teaching the class, two unexpected figures appeared in front of us."Daddy!""Milton, so you really are here!"It had been a long time since I had seen Penelope and Hughie. I had never seen them look this disheveled.Penelope used to carry herself like a princess, calm and composed, no matter what she did. Now, her hair hung loosely over her shoulders, her eyes bloodshot. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, faint but unmistakable.Hughie was usually clean and

As the days passed, Aisla and I walked through every corner of this place.Once in a while, letters came from old friends. They said that after I left, Penelope and Hughie seemed to have gone crazy. Every day, they asked everyone they knew about my whereabouts. They even caused scenes at government offices more than once, but nothing ever came of it.Penelope even terminated the pregnancy. She apologized to me in front of the entire city, saying she shouldn't have cheated and shouldn't have taken my love for granted.Hughie cried every day, saying he would never eat candy again and that he shouldn't have disobeyed me.Almost overnight, the public's view of them completely flipped.Penelope went from a respected executive to a tramp people openly despised, while Hughie became an ungrateful kid no one wanted to be associated with.Even Penelope's company was dragged down by it, and the stock price plunged. But she still didn't care. She even bought up advertising space all over

Over time, this place started to feel like a prison.According to the principal, I was the only person in seven years who had chosen to come here on purpose. When I heard that, a trace of guilt crept into my heart.I hadn't come purely to volunteer. I was really just looking for somewhere far enough, away from Penelope and Hughie.I followed the principal to the school and quickly realized things were far worse than I had imagined. The blackboard was a massive slab of stone propped up with wooden posts. Off to the side were chunks of charcoal, used for writing on the stone. The classroom itself was a small wooden shack, with wind leaking in from every direction.A few poorly dressed children sat below. At the front, an elderly man swayed as he stood. Even using all his strength, he could only leave faint marks on the stone."The parents are busy all day," the principal said. "They drop the kids off here in the morning to study. At night, they come back and take them home. I kn

Penelope tried to push Darren away, but after a few weak struggles, she gave in.Seeing their movements, Hughie quickly headed back into the house. When I saw Hughie heading in, I stopped watching their little performance. I cut myself a slice of cake and sat in the living room, acting as if nothing had happened.Hughie casually unwrapped a piece of candy and was about to pop it into his mouth when he suddenly seemed to remember something. He asked me softly, "Daddy, can I have one?"Hughie loved candy, but his teeth were bad. If he ate too much, they would hurt, so I had always kept a close eye on him.Maybe that was one of the reasons he hated me.I nodded."Go ahead. Eat it. No one's going to stop you anymore."Hughie looked at me in surprise. He didn't think much of it and happily started eating. Not long after, Penelope walked in. Seeing Hughie stuffing himself with candy, she looked a little puzzled."Milton, work's been really busy lately. I need to head out again. W
