Chapter 1

Author: Bagel
This graduation trip was something Roman and I had planned a long time ago.

Over the past few years in college, I had followed my mafia boyfriend to so many places.

Snowy mountain roads, deep canyons, private shooting ranges, and illegal street races.

They were all playgrounds for his thrill-seeking nature.

On the eve of our graduation, I leaned against his chest and brought it up once.

"Roman, let's go to the beach to take some photos."

"Let's find a coastal town where no one knows us. We can sleep until we wake up naturally, photograph the seagulls, and enjoy the ocean breeze without any bodyguards or rushing."

That day, he kissed my hair and agreed readily.

"No problem. You're the boss for the graduation trip."

I had looked forward to it for a long time, even drafting three different versions of the photo-shoot itinerary.

The hotel was booked right by the coastline, featuring an open-air balcony where we could capture the silhouette of the lighthouse at night.

I even secretly bought a sexy set of lace lingerie, wanting to do something romantic with him to the sound of the ocean waves.

But just a week before departure, Clara suddenly sent an off-road trail map of the Grand Canyon in our group chat.

[A graduation trip should obviously be somewhere exciting.]

[You can go to a boring beach anytime, but extreme off-roading in the canyon is a rare chance.]

Roman replied to her almost instantly.

[This route is intense.]

I stared at the screen, my fingertips hovering over the keyboard for a long time without pressing down.

In the end, I only typed out one sentence.

[But didn't we agree to go to the beach?]

Clara replied just as fast.

[Blair, you don't actually want to turn our graduation trip into a retirement home, do you?]

[We're all young here. Don't be such a nun.]

Other guys from his crew joined the group chat to tease me.

Some said the canyon was the only place fit for a real man. Some said the beach was just completely boring.

Someone said it would be a total waste if born thrill-seekers like Roman and Clara didn't go racing in the canyon.

Roman didn't say a single word in the group to defend me.

He just sent me a private message.

[Don't be a buzzkill.]

[Clara is right. I can take you to a place like the beach anytime later.]

Later. There was always a "later" with him.

But every "later" he promised me always ended up being for someone else.

I looked at that message, feeling as if something had tightly gripped my heart.

In the end, I obediently replied with one word. [Okay.]

So, I silently canceled all the beach itineraries.

I stayed up late again to research canyon routes, rent an SUV, book campsites, check sandstorm warnings, make supply lists, and even prepare first aid kits.

Clara threw out a casual remark in the group.

[Blair is always so good at planning the logistics.]

Followed by a thumbs-up emoji.

Looking at that sentence, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

On the day of departure, Roman drove that modified black SUV to pick me up.

Clara was already sitting in the passenger seat.

She was wearing sunglasses. Her long legs in cutoff shorts were propped up on the dashboard, and she was swirling a glass of tequila on the rocks.

Seeing me come out carrying a heavy equipment case, she lifted her chin at me.

"Blair, you take the back seat."

"I get carsick easily, so I need to sit in the front for some fresh air."

I got carsick too, and Roman knew that better than anyone.

Just as I was about to speak, he had already opened the back door for me.

"Just make do with it. Clara was partying at the bar until three in the morning, and she has a headache now."

"There's plenty of room in the back, so you can just lie down and take a nap."

I watched him make arrangements for another woman so naturally, and I suddenly remembered the year we first got together in college. The first time I accompanied him out of state for a family event, I was so carsick that I turned pale.

He gave up the passenger seat to me without hesitation. The big, bad mafia heir actually squeezed into the back seat, handing me water, tissues, and mints the entire way.

At that time he said, "So what if my girlfriend is a little delicate? I like spoiling her."

"I just love taking care of her."

But now, he casually shoved my luggage into the trunk.

He turned his head and whistled at Clara. "Buckle up. Get ready to enjoy the ride."

I stood by the car and smiled quietly.

It turned out that being his favorite had an expiration date.

I stopped in my tracks. She stared at me for a few seconds."Back then, I really did look down on you.""I thought you were soft, clingy, and had no ideas of your own.""Roman is going to inherit the Family, and there was no way he could marry a woman like that to be his Donna.""But later I realized that I wasn't much better than you.""I acted like I wasn't afraid of anything, but in reality, I just wanted to prove that I was the one who deserved to stand beside him."She gave a self-deprecating smile that carried a hint of sadness."Thinking about it now, it was incredibly stupid."I didn't say anything else, but Clara didn't stop."That day at the gas station, I intentionally didn't remind him."I raised my eyes to look at her, and she looked back candidly."I watched with my own eyes as you pushed open the car door and walked into that crappy convenience store.""The moment he stepped on the gas pedal, I knew better than anyone else that you hadn't gotten back in the car.""But I

Late that night, I received a phone call from my mother. She gently asked if I was adjusting well to living alone out there.I told her in a relaxed tone that everything was going well.My mother went silent for a moment on the other end, then lowered her voice and sighed."Sweetie, Mom actually wanted to tell you a long time ago. Every time you came back from trips with Roman, the light in your eyes was completely gone.""But you liked him, and Mommy was afraid saying it would make you upset."My eyes suddenly grew hot."Mom, was I completely stupid before?"My mother laughed softly on the other end."Not stupid at all.""When people are young, they always stubbornly chase after things they think are meant to be.""As long as you find your way out, it's all worth it."I hummed in agreement. After ending the call, I quietly leaned on the windowsill of my apartment, gazing at the distant coast. The night scenery of this small town exuded a reassuring tranquility. The yachts on the dista

Roman stubbornly stayed in this coastal town for a whole five days. This high and mighty heir would show up at the corner of my street right on time every day.Sometimes he had bodyguards deliver expensive imported sparkling water.Sometimes he brought me Italian takeout himself from a high-end restaurant.Sometimes he even had people airlift French desserts that I had only casually mentioned once in bed.If all of this had happened half a year ago, I would have been so excited I wouldn't have slept a wink. But at this very moment, I only felt that this delayed affection was incredibly absurd. On the fifth day, Clara finally couldn't take it anymore and came to find me.This time, she came alone. She stood all by herself at the entrance to the block, her delicate face looking unusually haggard."Blair, I guess you won."I looked at her in confusion, finding it completely baffling for a moment. She suddenly let out a laugh. "The expansion deal at the Grand Canyon is completely scrapped.

His voice abruptly cut off.Because even he couldn't invent a more high-sounding excuse.I finished the second half of his sentence for him."You just enjoyed my care, but you also felt my caution embarrassed you.""You were just used to having someone always there to catch you when you fall, yet you despised me for not keeping up with your thrill-seeking pace.""You just needed a glorified babysitter to handle the boring details for you, but deep down, you felt my efforts were worthless."Tears suddenly spilled from Roman's eyes. This was the first time I had ever seen him cry.In the past, he was always proud, forever carrying the arrogance of someone who controlled everything. That kind of pride born from his mafia bloodline, as if the whole world had to make way for him.But now, standing in this damp seaside alley, his eyes were as red as a teenage boy who had caused a disaster. If it were in the past, my heart would have ached for him.I would have stood on my tiptoes to kiss awa

Clara arrived in the evening, just a few hours later than Roman. As soon as she got out of the car, she marched straight up to me in her high heels."Blair, haven't you had enough?""Roman dropped everything to find you. The canyon negotiations are on hold, and he even blew off the talks with the allied Families.""Do you have any idea that we've been preparing those expansion plans for a whole six months?"I looked coldly at her exasperated face. "What does that have to do with me?"She clearly didn't expect me to answer like that, and her face fell."How could it have nothing to do with you?""You knew full well this trip also included an important mission to meet with other faction leaders! But the moment you canceled the hotels and played the missing person, Roman completely lost his mind, walked out in the middle of the negotiation table, and ran to the beach to look for you!""You threw a fit over your petty jealousy and destroyed half a year of hard work. Is this what you wanted

My heart trembled violently. It turned out that my meticulous arrangements, the ones that had been so despised, were not boring at all.My caution was not a buzzkill either. It was just that, in the past, they were given to the wrong person. That evening, I captured a breathtaking sunset over the coastline.I casually posted it on social media without any caption, just the photo.Just ten minutes later, Roman liked the photo.Right after that, his private message popped up.[I'm coming to find you.]I ignored it entirely. The very next afternoon, he actually appeared downstairs at the studio. He had clearly driven through the night. His short hair, usually styled meticulously, was messy, and there were dark, exhausted bags under his deep-set eyes. The collar of his shirt was open, revealing the familiar old scar on his collarbone. The moment he saw me, he first let out a sigh of relief, and then he looked genuinely hurt."Blair, how did you get so thin?"I looked at him, feeling a mome
