Emma’s POV

The elevator jolted once more before grinding to a complete stop. My stomach dropped right along with it.

“Oh my God,” I muttered, jabbing the emergency button like my life depended on it. “Come on, come on—”

Nothing. Just a faint click, then silence.

I grabbed the intercom receiver, pressed it to my ear. Static. No voice, no help. Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

“This is a nightmare.”

“Relax.”

His voice was smooth, irritatingly calm. Lucas leaned against the mirrored wall like he’d ordered the whole fiasco just to amuse himself. Hands in pockets, expression cool, like he wasn’t stuck in a metal box twenty floors up.

“Help is coming,” he added, almost lazily. “You’ll survive.”

I spun on him. “Survive an hour locked in here with you? That’s exactly what I’m worried about.”

His chuckle was low, warm, maddening. “Admit it—you’ve had worse company.”

I glared, though my pulse betrayed me with its traitorous hammering. “You seriously think you’re the better option?”

He tilted his he

  • Divorce and Regret: Chasing My Famous Lawyer Ex-Wife   Chapter 166 – Running Late

Brandon’s POVI was one street away.One.Then everything stopped.Cars jammed up ahead, horns blaring, people leaning out their windows, shouting. I leaned forward in my seat, trying to see past the line of stalled vehicles—and that’s when I saw it.Two men. Out of their cars. Chest to chest.“Unbelievable,” I muttered. One of them shoved the other. Someone screamed. A crowd began to form, phones already out, capturing every second like this was entertainment instead of a disaster waiting to happen.I checked my watch.Fifteen minutes late.My jaw clenched so hard it hurt.“Move,” I snapped uselessly, tapping the steering wheel. “Come on.”Nothing moved. The argument escalated fast—fists raised, voices hoarse with rage. A third man tried to intervene and got shoved aside for his trouble. Traffic was completely deadlocked now. That was it.I threw the car into park.“What are you doing?” the driver behind me yelled.“I’m done waiting,” I shot back, already yanking the door open.I did

Natalie’s POV“I really can’t stay long,” I said, standing halfway out of my chair as if momentum alone might carry me out the door. “I have a flight to catch.”The lie slipped out smoothly enough, but my chest felt tight as a vise. My pulse was loud in my ears, each beat counting down to the moment he would walk in.Attorney Morgan regarded me calmly, like a man who had seen every version of panic dressed up as professionalism. “I understand,” he said. “Though Brandon did mention he’d be arriving soon.”Soon.The word sent a jolt straight through me.He gestured toward the folder on his desk—the one he’d set aside earlier, unopened, waiting. “If you really need to go, then I can just let you read this now,” he said gently. “In Grandpa York’s last will, it’s indicated that you can read it without Brandon’s presence, but that Brandon just needs to be informed.” My gaze dropped to the folder as if it might explode.“That’s… the letter?” I asked, already knowing the answer. He nodded.

  • Divorce and Regret: Chasing My Famous Lawyer Ex-Wife   Chapter 164 – Plenty of Delays

Brandon’s POVI checked my watch for the third time in under a minute.Plenty of time. That was what I kept telling myself as I grabbed my jacket from the back of the chair and headed toward the door. Nervous energy buzzed through me—not the kind I got before negotiations or board meetings, but something sharper. Personal.I was finally going to meet her.The ex-wife I’d signed papers for but never really known.Maybe this would finally put an end to it. Or maybe it would make things worse. My phone rang just as my hand closed around the doorknob.I sighed and answered. “Brandon York.”“Mr. York, this is Clerk Alvarez from the family court,” a woman said briskly. “I’m calling regarding a minor issue with your finalized divorce paperwork.”I stopped short. “That was settled months ago.”“Yes, sir, it was,” she said. “This is procedural. We just need your confirmation before we release any related documents.”I glanced at my watch. “What kind of issue?”“There’s a discrepancy in how you

  • Divorce and Regret: Chasing My Famous Lawyer Ex-Wife   Chapter 163 – The Waiting

Natalie’s POVThe glass doors of Morgan & Associates reflected me back in fragments—hat pulled low, glasses too big for my face, trench coat buttoned all the way up despite the heat. You look ridiculous, I told myself. But ridiculous felt safer than exposed.Every footstep behind me made my spine stiffen. Every mirrored surface sent my pulse skidding. I kept my head down until I reached the reception desk, gave my name in a voice that didn’t quite sound like mine. “Attorney Morgan is expecting you.”I followed her, counting my steps, memorizing exits, my fingers already typing under the table of my phone.Me: I’m here. Please tell me he’s still stuck. The office was smaller than I expected—wood-paneled walls, a wide desk, framed certificates I didn’t bother reading. Attorney Morgan stood when I entered, extending a hand.“Natalie. Good to finally meet you in person.”“Likewise,” I said, hoping my voice didn’t betray how fast my heart was racing.I shrugged off my trench coat and sat,

Nathan’s POVThe road stretched ahead of us, gray and unforgiving, the windshield streaked with late-afternoon glare. I drove faster than necessary, knuckles tight on the wheel, jaw clenched so hard it ached.I should’ve been angry.Correction—I was angry. At her timing. At her certainty. At the way she stepped in without asking and said exactly what needed to be said. That was the problem. She was right.I replayed the meeting in my head—the look on Brown’s face, the way the leverage slipped the second Carmilla laid out the numbers. The extension. The breathing room. The deal that would’ve gone sideways if I’d pushed one inch further.“You blindsided me,” I muttered again, more to myself than to her.She didn’t answer this time. She sat beside me, composed, eyes forward, like she hadn’t just walked into my line of fire and redirected it.I hated how steady she was.I hated that I needed it.The silence pressed in. I could hear the soft click of her seatbelt, the faint rustle of paper

Carmilla’s POVThe meeting was supposed to be routine. That was the lie I told myself as we walked into the glass-walled conference room overlooking the supplier’s warehouse—steel beams, forklifts humming below, the faint smell of oil in the air. Nathan took the seat at the head of the table like he always did, composed, commanding. I sat beside him, tablet ready, pen steady.Across from us, Mr. Halvorsen didn’t bother with pleasantries.“I’ll be direct,” he said, folding his hands. “Given recent developments, my board is reconsidering our partnership with Graveswell.”Nathan’s jaw tightened. I felt it before I saw it.“Reconsidering,” Nathan repeated coolly. “Based on rumors.”alvorsen smiled thinly. “Based on risk.”My fingers stilled.“You’re referring to Vivian Sinclair,” Nathan said. “She has nothing to do with our operations.”“Public perception doesn’t care about technicalities,” Halvorsen replied. “And perception is… fragile. Especially when there are whispers of internal inst
