Morning sunlight filtered through the curtains of Evelyn's small apartment.

She woke to another wave of nausea.

Rushing into the bathroom, she barely reached the sink before she threw up.

When it was over, she rinsed her mouth and stared at herself in the mirror.

"You really are making your presence known," she whispered, gently resting a hand on her stomach.

A smile slowly spread across her face.

For the first time in days, it wasn't forced.

No matter how painful the divorce had been, one beautiful thing remained.

Her baby.

The child she had already begun to love with all her heart.

Later that morning, Evelyn visited a nearby maternity clinic for her first prenatal check-up.

The waiting room was filled with expectant mothers, some accompanied by their husbands, others by family members.

For a brief moment, her eyes lingered on a man helping his pregnant wife sit down.

A sharp ache pierced her heart.

She quickly looked away.

She would not compare her life to anyone else's.

When her name was called, she entered the examination room.

The doctor smiled warmly after reviewing her test results.

"Congratulations, Mrs... Miss Hartley."

"The pregnancy is progressing well."

"You'll need plenty of rest, healthy meals, and as little stress as possible."

Evelyn smiled.

"I'll do my best."

Before leaving, the doctor handed her a small envelope containing her medical records.

She carefully tucked it into her handbag.

That envelope now held the most precious secret in her life.

That afternoon, Evelyn met her grandmother at a quiet café.

Margaret studied her granddaughter for a long moment.

"You look different today."

"Do I?"

"Yes."

"You look... stronger."

Evelyn smiled.

"I've been thinking."

"About what?"

"I spent three years waiting for someone to choose me."

"I'll never do that again."

Margaret reached across the table and squeezed her hand.

"I'm proud of you."

"I'm going to find work."

"I want my child to grow up seeing a mother who stands on her own feet."

"You already have my support," Margaret replied.

"But I know you won't stop until you've earned everything yourself."

At the Sterling Group headquarters...

Damian stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows in his office.

His assistant, Lucas Bennett, entered carrying a folder.

"Mr. Sterling, these are today's contracts."

Damian nodded without turning around.

"Leave them there."

Lucas placed the folder on the desk but didn't leave immediately.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"I saw Mrs... Miss Hartley yesterday."

Damian finally turned.

"You did?"

"Yes."

"She looked... different."

Damian's expression remained calm.

"Is she causing trouble?"

"No."

"In fact, she seemed... peaceful."

Lucas hesitated before continuing.

"She was smiling."

That surprised Damian.

After everything that had happened...

Why would she be smiling?

He dismissed the thought almost immediately.

"It has nothing to do with me."

Lucas nodded and quietly left the office.

Once the door closed, Damian looked out over the city again.

He had expected Evelyn to call.

To ask for another chance.

To demand money.

To make the divorce difficult.

Instead...

She had disappeared without a word.

For reasons he couldn't explain, that silence unsettled him.

That evening, Evelyn stood on the balcony of her apartment.

The cool breeze brushed against her face.

She placed both hands over her stomach.

"I don't know if you're a little boy or a little girl," she whispered.

"But I already know one thing."

"I'll spend the rest of my life protecting you."

A gentle smile lit up her face.

Behind her, the divorce papers lay folded inside a drawer.

She had decided never to look at them again.

From this day forward, she wasn't living for the past.

She was living for the future.

And Damian Sterling remained completely unaware that, somewhere in the same city, the woman he had divorced was carrying the greatest blessing he would one day regret losing.
