Prep Work

It’s been a couple of weeks into my job at Ombra and I no longer feel like this was a fake position that Mr. Conti made up for me.

Jessica is useless.

To be clear, she is in no way stupid, she just isn’t here to be Mr. Conti’s assistance. She spends all her time using her control over his calendar to try and worm her way into his personal life.

I’ve taken extra care to make sure I never treat Mr. Conti with anything other than respect. I’ve tucked my attraction away in a tiny box in the back closet of my mind so that I sometimes even forget it exists.

The key is in having no eye contact so I can’t fall under the mesmerizing control of his green eyes. He doesn’t make it easy though. Every time I think I have it under control, he does something to throw me off.

He’s cold, controlling and sometimes arrogant. That part of Mr. Conti is easy to get used to and have as a boss, it’s what I expect, but sometimes he lets his human side show through. Like the times Jessica pushes him beyond his limit with her complete disregard for professionalism and he calmly dismisses her for the day when any other boss would yell or even fire her.

In the last couple of days, Jessica has started to become a bigger problem. Her only goal at work is to become Mrs. Conti, which means she expects me to do the work of two people. What's even worse is that, when Mr. Conti does a morning brief with her to go over his schedule, she spends the whole time trying to flirt and writes nothing down.

It's always a huge guessing game trying to figure out what we're supposed to be doing.

I've been here about a month now, and I've learned to read Jessica's moods. Today, she's smiling, so Mr. Conti has an event he needs to attend, and he doesn't have a date. He never takes a date.

Somehow, every time, Jessica talks herself into thinking that Mr. Conti will ask her to accompany him. She spends all week with her head in the clouds, finding the perfect dress. She is sometimes able to get a ticket to the event, and she'll come back on Monday talking all about how they connected at the event.

Once she sits down, I walk over to her desk with a notepad ready to get as much information as I can so I can piece together the rest.

"Hey, Jessica, what are we doing this week?" I ask.

"Oh, you know, the usual," she says, still daydreaming.

"Jessica, you need to write notes," I respond, exasperated. "We've gone over this. That is not enough to work with. Please tell me anything you can remember. I'm assuming he has an event this week?"

"Yes," she says excitedly. "The annual Leukemia Foundation Gala."

I nod, making a note. I'll look up the event, but I'm assuming it's black tie, so I note that his suit needs dry cleaning.

"He also mentioned making copies of a report," she says, almost like a question. It's the Bransen report. The whole office has been working on it for two weeks, making sure it was ready on time.

"Something about the jet," she says, and I can tell I'll be losing her attention soon. "Oh! And some French people are coming."

That's all I get before she leaves to go make a personal call. I check the schedule to see how many people will be attending the Bransen meeting and make a few extra copies. I also noticed the meeting runs through lunch, so I arrange lunch through our normal caterer.

The jet is a pretty easy issue as well. We have a company that charters the jet when it's not in use. I check the schedule with them and see that the 'French people' Jessica mentioned are flying in on Mr. Conti's jet and the arrangements need to be made and sent to their assistant.

Jessica returns hours later with Mr. Conti's lunch. She disappears all the time, but she never misses an opportunity to interact with Mr. Conti. The only time I've entered Mr. Conti's office since that first day was when he wasn't there.

I still make his coffee, of course, because Jessica seems to be allergic to work. She gave me his coffee order the second day and made a threat about how it had better be perfect so as not to embarrass her.

I'm able to get the contact information for the French clients coming in next week from Claire and I spend the week coordinating with their assistant. The information about what will be happening next week is mostly confidential, even to me, but I know it’s something big.

By the end of the week I'm exhausted, but I know I will have the whole weekend free since Mr. Conti will be visiting family on the weekend.

Jessica did manage to get tickets to the gala and spent all night posting to I*******m, but I have a good laugh when I get an email from the dry cleaners notifying me that the suit was never picked up, meaning Mr. Conti didn't attend the event in the end. I guess I shouldn't keep saying that Jessica has no work ethic. She is amazingly persistent when there is something she wants.

He looks at me and asks, "Are we all set?"

"Yes," I respond with confidence, "They've landed and will arrive here in an hour. Caterers will be here in 45 minutes to set up breakfast and the wife will be able to check in as early as she wants. Her room is already available."

He nods. “And Jessica?” he asks.

I shrug and say, “M.I.A.”

Mr. Conti almost never changes his stern expression, but I swear I see a look of relief touch his eyes. Like any good assistant, I’m learning my boss' moods and expressions, but this time it makes me weary.

Something keeps telling me to stay away from Mr. Conti, but I also can’t seem to keep myself from wanting to solve the puzzle of whom this man is.

  • Don't Love Me   Tea Time

Today, I'm allowed outside the bedroom for the first time. The guards came to the room without Valentina, which, at first, had me worried. She usually hated letting them interact with me.They untied me from the bed and instructed me to wear a robe. I appreciated the little bit of modesty. A bath robe like this thin silk one, would have made me feel very bare before, but now it is like wearing a parka. Compared to the see-through, lacy lingerie, it was downright conservative. The house was richly decorated, but you could tell it hadn't been in use for years based on the dated furnishings and the dusty smell. I wondered if we were in an out-of-fashion neighbourhood. It was a shame that a house this large and beautiful was left empty when there were so many families in need of a home.I was taken down a flight of stairs to a sitting room where Valentina was enjoying a morning tea. She was dressed impeccably in a cream cashmere sweater, tucked into cream slacks. Her red hair in a perfect

She smiles demurely and says, "Oh, you know I don't get involved in that kind of thing. Best to leave it to the men. I'm happy to support you all by making sure you're fed and rested.I smile back like we're close friends again and say, "Allegra, I know you're more capable than that, and you see everything that happens in the house. Is there anyone that's been looking suspicious to you?""Cass, you know women only survive in this world if they know how to stay quiet," she says, pretending to be nervous."The door is shut, this room is soundproof and you know I can keep a secret," I say, hinting at our affair. It does the trick. She says, "Look, ever since Christmas, Constantine has been different. Not just with me, with the business as well. He's been trying to clean up the illegal aspects and distancing himself from them. Kind of like how you did in Chicago. I don't know why the sudden shift, but there are a lot of people who don't want the illegal side of things to end. That's where

  • Don't Love Me   Digging for Leads

I swipe my hand across the table, knocking a crystal vase onto the ground. The sound of it shattering gives me a momentary feeling of relief before the agony rises to the surface again."That's not good enough!" I yell, and I can see that Constantine is trying to be patient with me. He normally doesn't tolerate being treated like this and my tantrums have been incrementally increasing over the past two weeks without Alexa.I'm in hell knowing that she's with Valentina. She was finally starting to get over what happened the first time and now she's right back there, only this time we can't find her."Calm down," Constantine says, waving off the guards in the room. I know he's struggling with the guilt of her being taken from his own house, he'd even let it go when I punched him a couple of times."It's been two weeks, and we don't have a clue where she is!" I rage."We know she's no longer in the city of New York, which means she's probably being hidden in the suburbs somewhere in New

  • Don't Love Me   Focused on the Positives

Valentina came back early that day and watched a movie with me. She sat behind me with me between her legs and held me in her arms. It was an intimate position that felt extra vulnerable because I couldn't see her. She would periodically caress my hair or arm and it would give me shivers. Not the good kind. For the next week, the days pass slowly in a similar pattern. Valentina bathes me and stays with me for breakfast and joins me later in the day for a movie and then dinner. During meals, I try to keep the conversation fun so that she lets her guard down with me.Mostly, I keep learning of the horrors of her upbringing. She talked about each of her brothers and their particular tastes in the bedroom. I was absolutely horrified. If I made it out of this alive, I wouldn't even want her punished. I would want her to live comfortably in a good psychiatric facility where she could get help and some peace.I felt we had spent long enough establishing a routine that, during dinner one even

  • Don't Love Me   On a Mission

Breakfast is waiting for us at the table and I'm a little unnerved that I didn't hear anyone come in during my bath. It leaves me feeling exposed. We go to the same places as yesterday and we both have the same dish of one poached egg and avocado in front of us. After sharing two meals with Valentina, I'm starting to wonder if she maybe has an eating disorder, because this definitely isn't enough food for one full meal.I'm already starving from only eating a salad yesterday, so I decide I need to invoke Cass's name in the hopes of getting more food."Could I possibly get some toast with breakfast?" I ask. Trying to ask nicely first."I don't eat carbs," she responds, like it's the most reasonable response."Cass and I eat carbs every morning, it's good for brain activity," I explain. She looks up at me suspiciously, then asks, "And you let him decide what you eat? That seems a little controlling. I'll have to talk to him about it."I hold back my laughter at the irony of the situatio

  • Don't Love Me   The Name of the Game

I eventually fell into a fitful sleep. For hours, I had nightmare after nightmare until I was finally exhausted enough to fall into a deep dreamless sleep.I wake up to a gentle stroking of my hair and I know it's Valentina. I try to keep my breathing steady so I can pretend I'm still sleeping. I'm hoping she just wants to watch me sleep and that she'll get bored and leave soon enough. However, after what feels like forever, I finally pretend to wake up.I open my eyes to see her leaning over me. I wonder briefly if this is going to be in my next nightmare. She smiles such a loving smile that you would never know she was crazy."Good morning, sweetheart," she says.I can't bring myself to respond, so I just smile. Her eyes light up at my response, thankfully telling me it's enough."I thought you might want to clean up a bit today," she says thoughtfully. "I've run a bath for you, and I'll help you wash."I don't relish the thought of having her present while I wash, but it's been a c
