CHAPTER TEN

The saleswomen nodded eagerly and led Cassie toward the fitting room.

Cassie closed the curtain and faced the mirror. She still looked pale and tired, with dark circles under her eyes that even makeup could not completely hide. Still, she was here, and for once, she was making her own choices.

She tried on the first dress, a beautiful deep-blue gown with silver embroidery. It looked expensive and elegant, but the fabric was stiff and heavy. Cassie moved her arms, twisted her body, a

Erica touched Vanessa’s face, then looked at Briar in terror. “What the hell is happening to her?”“She probably can’t do without her drugs,” Briar said, trying to remain calm. He pulled out his phone and quickly dialed a healthcare service. “I’m contacting the healthcare team.”He frowned when the call refused to connect. He tried again, but the same message appeared on his screen. “Damn it. The network isn’t working.”Briar lowered his phone and opened another application. A list immediately appeared on the screen, filled with names. There were hundreds of them.Erica leaned closer. “What is that?”“It’s a list of names,” Briar replied. “People who are being prioritized for evacuation.”Erica looked at him in surprise. “Who made this list?”“I did.” Briar scrolled through the names, his expression unusually serious. “I started it weeks ago, after I first heard the rumors.”Erica stared at him. “What rumors?”“Rumors about what was coming.” Briar glanced toward the elevator doors, th

Cassie stared at her. “What?”“You’re showing signs of malaria and typhoid. Your temperature is also slightly elevated, which could explain some of the symptoms you’re experiencing.”Then she blinked. “Malaria and typhoid?”The nurse nodded. “Yes. You should start treatment as soon as possible. Fever, dizziness, weakness, and body discomfort can come from those infections, and it’s better to treat them now rather than allow them to get worse.”Cassie barely heard her. “Malaria and typhoid.”In her first life, those had been some of the symptoms people complained about before everything became much worse. Fever. Weakness. Dizziness. Then the rashes. Then the strange behavior. Her stomach twisted. “But you’re sure I’m not infected?” she asked. The nurse nodded. “Your infection test is negative. For now, we have no reason to believe you’re infected. Just make sure you get treatment for the malaria and typhoid.”Cassie barely heard her again for, Her chest was rising and falling too quick

Hank grabbed another chair and held it tightly in both hands. His usual calm expression was gone as he kept his eyes fixed on the infected man. “Stay down,” he ordered.Cassie stared at him from the floor, still trying to understand what was happening. “You again?”Hank didn’t take his eyes off the man. “Unless you have a better idea, I suggest you listen to me.”Before Cassie could reply, the infected man suddenly lunged at them again with a terrifying growl.Hank stepped forward and swung the chair with all his strength. It slammed into the man’s head, sending him stumbling backward.Cassie stayed on the floor for a moment, staring at Hank in shock. Somehow, in the middle of all this madness, he had stepped in front of her again.“You saved me,” she whispered.Hank glanced at her over his shoulder. “Are you hurt?”Cassie quickly shook her head. “No.”She scrambled to her feet, although her legs were still shaking. Around them, the conference hall had become a nightmare. People scre

Cassie gave Fiona a cold smile. “I don’t like you, Fiona. You take too much of my husband’s time at the office doing company work, leaving me all alone at home. But I’m willing to help you get rid of her because Sierra is becoming a nuisance.”Fiona stared at her, clearly surprised by the offer. “You’d actually help me?”“Don’t get too excited,” Cassie replied with a faint smile. “I’m not suddenly your friend. I still don’t like you. I’m only willing to work with you because Sierra is becoming a problem for both of us.”Fiona’s lips curved into a small smile. She understood exactly what Cassie was doing because she felt the same way. Neither of them liked the other, and neither trusted the other enough to turn their backs. For now, however, Sierra was a much bigger problem.“I promise that if you help me, you’ll be seeing more of Briar at home,” Fiona said, forcing a pleasant expression. “It’s not my fault he’s been spending so much time at the company lately. There has been too much

Briar immediately straightened in his chair and turned his attention back to Hank. “Of course.”Cassie lowered her eyes, but before she could say anything, the System flickered to life.[OBSERVATION: HANK CALLOWAY. CEO. INTELLIGENT. OBSERVANT. PROTECTIVE. POTENTIAL ALLY?]Cassie stared at the message. “Ally?”[FURTHER ANALYSIS REQUIRED. INITIAL DATA SUGGESTS HE IS NOT LIKE THE WELSONS.]Cassie glanced at Hank again. He sat calmly at the other end of the table, completely focused on the meeting. No, she thought. He definitely wasn’t like the Welsons. Her fingers tightened around the pen in her hand. She still couldn’t bring herself to respond to Briar’s confession. Not here, with so many people around. She would deal with him later. The meeting continued in the main conference hall, where representatives from both companies were already seated. The screens at the front displayed the logos of Welson Group and Clarence Company.Fiona stood beside the screen with a remote in her hand. “G

Erica hurried forward, her face tight with panic as Hank turned toward the exit. “Mr. Calloway, please.”Hank stopped and slowly turned around. His expression remained calm, but there was a coldness in his eyes that made Erica hesitate. She quickly forced a smile, trying her best to hide the fear written all over her face. “There’s no need to let a small misunderstanding destroy such an important business opportunity,” she said carefully. “We can resolve this. There’s no reason to walk away from a merger worth hundreds of millions over something so minor.”Hank stared at her for a few seconds before giving a quiet, humorless laugh. “A small misunderstanding?”Erica’s smile faltered. “Yes,” she said quickly. “That’s what I meant. Things became heated, and perhaps some words were taken the wrong way. But this is a family matter. It has nothing to do with the business.”Hank’s eyes narrowed. “You humiliated your daughter-in-law in front of an entire room of executives, and now you want m
