Chapter 23

Adeline's POV

I had just arrived at the Martinez family home, feeling exhausted from my journey back from my home with that damn man I called a husband. The servants welcomed me home, and without so much a word, one of them accepted my bag and cardigan so I could transfer them to my room.

"Mom, I'm here!" I called out to my mother as the maid walked away while I flopped onto the sofa.

The woman who resembled me and was older came over and sat next to me, an expectant look on her face.

"How was it? Have you made any progress in approaching Chris and winning his heart?" She asked, taking one of my hands in both of hers. "Tell me when you've made it, Adeline."

"I can't do it yet, ma'am." I was annoyed, thinking back to how that heartless man had treated me during our married life.
