I decided to stay at a small and cheapest inn on the outskirts of town. I deliberately didn't choose an expensive inn because I didn't have much money to survive, plus I had also been evicted from my home and didn't know how long I would stay there.
I've never gotten any money from my father. Father decided on such a thing because he thought of me as a lowly person. Unlike my stepbrother, my father would be generous and spoiled him a lot. That made me jealous of Adeline.
My head was dizzy thinking about the incident earlier that I thought would be my happy day. It turned out to be the worst day of my entire life. I was still wondering why did that happen?
I went into the toilet, which was very small, to wash my face with cold water. My hand rubbed the dewy mirror of the sink. My eyes were puffy after crying so much earlier.
I let out a long breath. "I should be able to move on, right?" I asked, staring at my pathetic reflection in the mirror.
After finishing my business in the small room, I sat on the bed and took my cell phone from my handbag. I was going to call Christian to ask for an explanation about what happened that morning at the altar. I need a reason why he suddenly did such an unexpected thing to me.
"What happened? Why is there no waiting tone?" I tried to call Christian, but the call was repeatedly disconnected. I didn't even hear a waiting tone on the call. "Did he block my number?" I wondered.
I put the phone on the bed and stared at the wall. "Why are you doing this to me, Chris? Are you not thinking about me at all right now?"
My head throbbing with pain again. I chose to rest and will find out what happened today later. I need a break to recover my exhausted mind and mentality.
The following day, I was already preparing to buy a few pieces of clothing with my money. I hadn't brought any clothes here, as I'd only brought one change from church. So, after buying some clothes, I decided to visit Christian's house.
The taxi stopped right in front of me. I quickly got in and told him the address I was going to.
Thirty minutes later, the taxi carrying me stopped in front of a luxurious house I had visited several times. After paying the fare, I got out of the yellow vehicle and stepped into the spacious courtyard of Christian's residence. I arrived at the terrace and met one of the servants who happened to be outside, and she invited me into the house.
"Is Christian home?" I asked the young servant.
She nodded. "Mr. Grant is in his room, Miss Martinez."
"Could you please call him? I'd like to see him."
The young maid nodded again and walked away from me.
I heard tapping heels behind me and suddenly turned my body forward. I thought it was Christian who was coming to see me, but it was his mother.
Mrs. Grant stood not far from me, her eyes scanning my appearance from toe to toe with a condescending gaze. Her gaze was always level with me, as I knew she had never liked me being in a relationship with her son. However, Christian always encouraged me and told me that one day, I could melt his mother.
"You don't belong here. You should leave." Mrs. Grant began to chase me away with her hurtful words.
"I just wanted to see Christian. We have something to talk about," I explained the purpose of my visit to her.
"You have to realize your marriage is never going to happen. You've been dumped. You don't deserve to see Christian again. You are so shameless. You better leave before I call the security to drag you out of here!" Mrs. Grant said very sternly to me. I realized that she had never been nice to me at all.
I wrung my hands, biting my lip. I wanted to see Christian because I felt that this situation was very messed up, and I needed an explanation from that man. I looked at Nova Grant with a pitiable look, asking for pity. "Please, meet me with Christian. There must be something going on why he suddenly changed so quickly like this."
I saw Christian's mother's face turn very angry. Then she pushed me until I fell on the floor. I was surprised by what she did to me. I felt pain in my buttocks because I had lost quite hard earlier. I tried to rise to my feet with difficulty. Nova Grant was still staring at me with her sharp gaze that was eager to swallow me whole this time.
"Mrs. Grant, please ...."
Nova Grant stood in front of me.
"You! How dare you show up here?!"
I saw Christian appear. The man stood in the middle of the stairs with a stern face. The look in his eyes that had always looked at me lovingly now that look turned hateful towards me. I always liked his smile, which greeted me at the beginning of the day. Now, I didn't see that smile anymore, and there were only tightly pursed lips with no faint smile. There was an instant tightness that gathered in my chest. I don't know what made that man become like this.
"Christian, I want to talk to you," I said as Christian walked over to where I stood with his mom on the porch.
Christian looked at me coldly.
"There must be something going on, right? Why did you refuse our marriage?" I asked with a very distressed voice and an overwhelming feeling of panic.
Christian still looked at me coldly. "There's nothing more to talk to you about. I don't want to see you anymore, and our marriage will never happen. You are nothing to me anymore. Let alone talking to you. I don't even want to see you."
After saying those painful things, he walked away from me. Leaving me in shocked silence as Christian's words hurt me deeply. How cruel is he?
"Didn't you hear what my son said? Christian has realized his folly from a trashy woman like you!" I didn't care about Nova's words at all. I was feeling my heartbreak from the man who I thought loved me so much.
I limped away from Christian's residence. I walked along the path and let my feet go nowhere. My mind kept wondering about Christian's words that I still didn't understand. What happened to him? The excuses he made made absolutely no sense to me.
Finally, my body felt tired from walking so far, with tears that kept falling down my cheeks during the trip. I didn't care about the people who looked at me strangely. My heart had been broken into pieces. I felt like a very pitiful woman.
Right now, I was in a place, who knows where. Because my legs were tired, I chose to sit on an empty park chair. My tears fell again, and suddenly, the drops of water from the sky slowly fell and turned into a torrent as if the universe knew that I was grieving and needed a handhold.
"Oh, Christian... why did you do this to me? It's too painful. You know how much I love you. Even though I ...."
I opened my eyes slowly as a bright light dazzled my eyes."Where am I?" My hand gripped my head, which suddenly hurt a lot. Opening my eyes wide, I began to scan my surroundings. This place was like a hospital room but smaller. "What happened to me?" I also saw that my clothes had changed into hospital clothes."Hi, welcome back." A woman dressed as a nurse came to see me. The woman smiled kindly at me.Perhaps she saw the confusion on my face, so she explained how I ended up in this clinic before I asked."There was someone who brought you here. You were unconscious, and all your clothes were wet."I let out a long breath. I seemed to remember the incident where I was about to head to the inn to rest because my clothes were wet."Can I meet the person who helped bring me here? I want to thank him."The head nurse shook her head slowly with a very regretful look. "Unfortunately, that person has left. He said he was swamped, so he couldn't wait until you woke up."I was a little disap
Chris' POVTonight, I was at a bar in the city center, enjoying my drink alone. I poured my bottle, which was half empty, into a round glass and gulped it down. I poured it again until the liquid in the bottle was gone entirely. It didn't matter if I was drunk. The frenetic sound of the DJ's music was pounding so loudly that my ears were almost ringing. I cast my eyes around the bar, which tonight seemed to be very crowded with revelers.I let out a long breath. I was suffering because of Nicole Martinez. The woman I thought I loved. I've done everything for her, and now I don't want to care about her anymore after I know what she's like.My head was already very dizzy from all the drinking and the loud music. I felt very bored and intended to leave here.I feel like I'm not drunk even though I've finished a bottle. My brain still seemed to be functioning very well. It was just that my head felt dizzy, and the effect of the music was very annoying. I got off the barstool and almost fe
Chris’ POVOne month had passed since Nicole's accident. Investigators said that Nicole's body could not be found. They assumed that Nicole's body was burnt up in the accident, as well as the taxi driver's, since the car exploded, leaving only the skeleton of the car behind. Others say that wild animals ate the bodies in the area, as the rescue team arrived too late. All are assumptions, and no one knows what happened to them. But what is certain is that they are dead.I don't understand how I feel right now. I don't want to think about what happened before and try to forget about it. And, now, I've been faced with something I can't avoid because what Adeline Martinez said the other day about the wedding happened—the marriage of the two Grant-Martinez families.I don't know what to say because, at this moment I'm already at the altar to perform the marriage blessing. I have stood here before, but this time, I will be the groom of Adeline Martinez, who is none other than Nicole's step-
Nicole's POVI stared at the sky from my porch, feeling the breeze with my eyes closed. It had been eight years since the most horrific event of my life, but I was still alive. My life felt more peaceful, especially with the various good things that started coming my way after something else arrived at me and accompanied me all this time. All the hardships I had experienced before felt like a dream, but they never really went away in this life that I thought of as my second time around.I still vividly remember the terrifying incident I experienced, just like yesterday. I felt goosebumps, not believing how I could get out of those times of suffering, but here I am now. Still breathing and looking at the sky above my head.Suddenly, I could hear the voice of a boy whispering in my ear with his cute voice. "Mom, what are you thinking about?" I immediately held my chest as a reflex."Richard... you surprised mom." I turned my head, looking at the boy I gave birth to already standing next
Nicole's POVI was ready with my makeup and clothes. The reflection of my face in the mirror looked elegant, but I did not forget the stern impression that I also wanted to show myself that I was different from the old me.Back then, I was shy and lacked confidence, affecting my self-confidence. I didn't realize it then, but as time passed in this new life of mine, I changed it so as not to return to the unfortunate fate that I had felt before. After everything I've been through, the change in the way I carry myself now is nothing compared to the line of death I've crossed. I took a breath and let it out, then felt my hand grabbed by my son.My son smiled sweetly. He was also ready and looked handsome in his tailor-made suit. Richard seemed to be more impatient than I. "Come, let's go, Mother.""Yes, my son," I answered and led him into the living room. There, Edwin was already waiting and looking at us intently, making sure nothing was lacking in our appearance with just a glance of
Nicole's POVI held Richard's hand tightly, staring at the simple grave and my name on the tombstone. Key also accompanied us, silently staring at the supposedly empty grave with a cold gaze.I snorted softly, already expecting that they would easily carry out my funeral when my death was uncertain. Looking at the appearance of my grave, the people who took care of my death must have only given a simple order to the cemetery caretaker so that the resting place with my name was maintained. There were no decorations or wreaths, just the grass that naturally grew from the ground rather prominently to mark the existence of one's grave, in addition to the wooden headstone with my name."They must be very happy about my death," I said coldly, but I also felt a mixture of feelings that words could not express when looking at the grave in front of us.Richard sighed. "Mom's grave is too simple. The headstone is made of worn wood, not polished stone like other graves."I also noticed that diff
Nicole's POVWe finally arrived at our home in Mekana City, a place I had left long ago after my past life had been so threatened and unsafe. I left everything behind, but I didn't expect to end up back here in the house Edwin gave me.Richard looked excited next to me, staring at the house in front of us, looking so spacious and magnificent. The garden with the fountain between the entrance and the fence was well-maintained and lovely with its distinctive stone carvings. This place isn't as big as Edwin's house, which has a one-acre yard, but my son can still play freely in the yard just like there. Key explained to Richard and me that there was a small playground in the backyard with a sandbox, slides, and swings."Can I play after this, Mom?" Richard asked after hearing Key's explanation.I nodded, smiling at the look of joy on his face.I smiled as Richard ran in and jumped up and down when a maid greeted us. "Come on, come in, Mom!"There weren't many people around the house, jus
Chris's POV"Get out of my room!" I shooed away Adeline, who was trying to get closer and cling to me on the bed, not caring even though she staggered from my push and had to hold on to the dresser to keep from falling.Adeline was angry, giving me a look of annoyance at my treatment. "Why do you keep doing this to me, Chris? "We're married! Why do we sleep in separate rooms when we've been husband and wife for so long?""I'm not comfortable sleeping with someone else," I said, not looking at Adeline, who was still by the closet and staring at me sharply. That woman is very stubborn about the same issue, not giving up even though I've said this repeatedly. I couldn't understand what Adeline was thinking all this time that she kept insisting on sleeping with me even though I always refused."Oh my God, Chris. I'm your wife!" Adeline was getting desperate. "We've been married for eight years, but in all that time, you've only touched me with lip kisses, never more! And that just once. I
