Jenny POV

Anna bent down in a panic and picked up one of the scattered documents from the floor, her eyes scanning the page rapidly. In just a few seconds, the anger and arrogance on her face faded, replaced by a strained composure that barely concealed her unease.

She clearly hadn’t expected me to produce this piece of evidence. Her lips trembled as she shot me a vicious glare, then made a move to tear the document in half.

“Go ahead,” I said coolly. “I’ve already saved the original copy digita

Sophie’s fingers twitched on the edge of the witness stand. Her lips parted then snapped shut, her teeth sinking into the soft flesh lining her lower lip. Standing three meters away, the defense attorney had his hands clasped behind his back, chin tilted slightly upward as if admiring an exhibit on display.“I didn’t—” Sophie began.“Answer with simply yes or no.” The lawyer cut her off. His tone was smooth, every syllable polished smooth like a pebble worn down by river currents over a thousand years.“No.” Sophie’s voice boomed through the microphone, amplified threefold, its echo reverberating against the domed ceiling. Her hand slipped off the witness stand’s ledge to hang limp at her side, fingertips trembling faintly.Jenny dug her fingernails out of the fabric of her suit trousers, leaving a fresh crease across her knee and a pale scratch marring the dark navy material. She reached for the fountain pen resting on the table, curling her fingers around its barrel. The metal ferru

Sophie walked from the main courtroom entrance to the witness stand in muddy stiletto heels, exactly twenty-three steps. Jenny counted them. Her fountain pen hovered two millimetres above Emma’s power of attorney document; a drop of ink gathered at the nib, swelled, then fell, leaving a circular ink blot on the blank margin of the paperwork.Sophie came to a halt before the witness stand. Her fingers rested on the wooden railing, half the nail polish chipped away to reveal the yellowed nail bed underneath. She had left her rolling suitcase in the aisle. It tipped onto the marble floor, its wheels spinning slowly with a soft click, click, click, like a clock winding down to a stop.“I’m here,” Sophie said. Her voice reverberated beneath the courtroom vaulted ceiling, the wooden panels dampening some of its higher frequencies, making it half a tone deeper than it had been at the premiere.Jenny slid her pen bac

Olivia stood at the entrance of the courtroom. She was wearing that blue coat. The shoulder line of the coat was too wide; the fabric hung down from her shoulders, creating two extra folds on either side of her body. Her hands hung at her sides, and her right index finger and middle finger were unconsciously rubbing against the seams of the coat’s hemline. Her hair was combed behind her ears, revealing a small, delicate face. The light from above her head cast two faint shadows on her cheekbones. Her gaze swept across the courtroom. She noticed the journalists sitting in the audience seats, the pale face of Lucas, and the figure of Alexander sitting in the family area. Her pupils contracted slightly when she saw Alexander. Her steps paused for half a second, and her shoe heels knocked against the threshold slightly.Jenny stood up from behind the lawyer’s seat. A short, sharp sound was heard as the chair legs scraped against the marble floor. She walked ar

She pressed her tongue against the upper palate, trying to swallow that bitter taste. A tingling sensation spread along the base of her tongue, as if she had bitten into an underripe persimmon. Olivia held the cup in her hands, her lips close to the rim of the cup, taking a cautious sip. The sweet, sticky liquid of hot cocoa flowed along her tongue. She frowned slightly, rubbing her tongue against the upper palate twice, as if trying to adjust to the overly sweet taste. The marshmallow had melted, forming a thin layer of grease on the brown liquid surface. “I’ll be going to court tomorrow,” Olivia said, her voice muffled inside the paper cup. “Do I need to look into that man’s eyes?” “No.” Jenny placed the black coffee on the coffee table, the bottom of the cup making a clear clink. She stood up and walked over to the window, turning her back on Olivia. The morning light streamed in from behind her, casting a long shadow on the floor.&
