“Thank you, Mr. Sarton,” I said as I shook his extended hand.
“Please call me Eric, and I hope you don't mind me calling you by your name.”
“No, I don't mind,” I said, realizing I was still holding his hand. I withdrew mine and sat down.
"Okay, let's get down to business. I am fully aware of what has happened to your family so far,” he said.
“How did you get to know who I am and how to find me?” I asked, feeling suspicious.
“I don't know if you are aware, but your family’s case still remains one of the uncracked cases. I am interested in it because I know I can help you solve it.”
“How?”
"I am a lawyer, and trust me, I know who killed your parents.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“The people who killed your parents are also my enemies.”
“Then why don't you just finish them off? What do I have to do with this?” I wanted to know his intentions.
"I'm not a bad person, Miss Lillian Anthony,” he said, using my full name.
“I suggest you forget about our benefit and think about yours; I mean, he can help you get your father's company back, and you can finally find the people who killed your parents,” Alex added.
“But I have to pay you back in one way or another," I said, still considering that these two men sitting in front of me were willing to help me without requesting anything in return.
“Okay, will you be willing to let my company run your father's company until we are able to settle things?” Was he being serious right now?
That still doesn't count as a benefit; in fact, having his law firm work with my father's crime-fighting company is like giving it the look and publicity my dad always wanted.
I'm still going to be the one to benefit. But why do I care? I will be getting everything I have ever wanted. Why should I care if they have a benefit or not?
"Okay, fine. Once I have the company, I will sign it over to your firm.”
“Good, then you might want to go through this and sign it,” he said, placing a document in front of me.
**Eric's POV**
I stared at her as she went through the documents. I know I haven't mentioned the most important part of this deal, but I just couldn't say it.
Alex gave me a look; I knew he was urging me to tell her about the part we excluded from the contract.
“And also, Miss Anthony.” I can't believe I still can't call her by her name.
“There is another thing you need to know that is not in the contract. But I have it printed out; once you agree, I will hand it over to you for signing.”
“Okay, you can tell me.”
“Alex, why don't you help me with this?” I said, pushing the responsibility over to him.
“Okay, Lilly, for all this to be possible, you will have to marry Eric,” Alex said as we both stared at her, waiting for her response.
“What!” Here goes my hearing; I knew this was going to happen anyway.
**Lilly's POV**
“You both are joking, right?” I asked, but they just stared at me. Alex had a look that said, "What is the big deal?" while Eric was just emotionless.
Since I got here, he has not smiled, laughed, or shown any form of emotion. He just stared at me blankly.
I took their silence as a no; they weren't joking. I have to marry Eric Sarton. Oh God, this is not happening.
“Don't worry; it is just until you both achieve what you want. Look, we could make it a fake marriage, but he is famous. Reporters are going to come poking their noses just to know if he really got married or if it was just a fake,” Alex said.
“But why must we get married to make this work?” I asked curiously.
“Because I can't wake up one morning and walk into your father's company just to file a report of stolen property without having any connection with you. But if you are my wife, the public will see it as a husband fighting for his wife,” Eric said.
What he said made sense, but getting married and divorcing later—is that not going to be another problem?
“But won't it cause more trouble when all this is over?”
“Don't worry, we will only have our marriage registered. It's not going to be that big of a deal.”
It's not like I have any other option; I'm here, and I have to face every single consequence that comes with this.
“Fine, let's get this started.”
“Good, now let me give you the details. You both will need to go public, at least for a month before the marriage. We need to convince and leave the public curious about you,” Alex said.
“Why? It's not like Eric hasn't been seen with other ladies before."
"Actually, he hasn't ever been seen in public with any lady. That's why the news about both of you is going to go viral. People have been curious about the type of woman he will date, but since this dude sitting beside me has chosen to date his work instead of women, people are beginning to think he is gay. And that is drawing unnecessary attention towards me since we are normally seen together,” Alex said with a frustrated look on his face, while Eric frowned. At least I finally get to see a little bit of emotion on his face.
I'm guessing he doesn't like the fact that people think he is gay. I couldn't help laughing at the expression on his face.
“Okay, when you mentioned going public, what exactly do you mean?” I asked Alex, unable to figure it out myself.
“Like being seen in public together and making physical contact in public. We need both of you to be all over the news. I want the reporters to be curious about the lucky lady who won the heart of Eric Sarton.
Alex said, "Look at me; I am so d*mn lucky indeed." All this time, I was waiting for Eric to say something, but it looked like his mind was elsewhere.
“Okay, so when do we begin?” I asked Alex.
“How about now? We are going to start with getting you a room and settling you in. Then we move on to making you up to his standard.”
I looked at myself and understood what Alex meant by that. I just nodded, indicating I was up for anything.
“Let's not forget you signing the contract,” Eric said. I really forgot he was here since he wasn't saying much.
I took the book and signed it before giving it back to him.
“Let's get started.”
For the rest of the day, Alex took me out to change my wardrobe, as he said. We went to the salon to get my hair done. From there, we went to the manicure and pedicure spa, then to the shopping mall. Alex took his time letting me get a lot of clothes, shoes, and jewelry.I got tired at some point and couldn't walk anymore. I had to make Alex stop so we could get lunch.“While we are here, I want you to know that a little photoshoot will be done tomorrow. You will be having dinner with Eric at one of his best restaurants in town. I will be there to take a few photos. On Friday, you will be attending a party with him.”All this was getting me annoyed. I mean, why wouldn't he let me eat? I had been walking around all day trying to make myself the perfect girl for Eric Sarton.“Are you even paying attention to any of the things I have been saying so far?""No, Alex, because you won't let me eat and think straight. Let me enjoy my food, then I will listen to you forever if I have to.”“I wo
When we got back, I was so tired that I didn't even bother to unpack the shopping bags. I just took a bath and went to sleep.I woke up the next morning feeling better, though my legs were sore from standing and walking all day. When I heard a tap on the door, I rushed towards it, thinking it was Alex, but I saw an elderly woman with a tray of food. It was smoked salmon and avocado toast. I took the food from her and thanked her.“Alex wanted me to inform you that your hairdresser and makeup artist will be here to help you get dressed for the day.”“Wait, I mean, how can I address you?” I asked when I couldn't think of a name for her. She wasn't dressed like a chef or a worker.“Call me Anna; everyone around here calls me by my name,” she said with a smile.“Thank you, Anna, for sharing some of your food with me.”“Nah, I didn't do anything; I just followed the young master's order.”“You mean Eric?”“Yes.”“Okay, but thank you for bringing it all the way up here.”“You are welcome."
“What happened?” Alex asked when he saw me walk in. I wasn’t really focused on that question because my foot was hurting like hell.“I don’t know; why don’t you ask Eric?” I simply replied.“You both were supposed to be a couple in love; now the news says you’re just a client throwing yourself at him.”Alex sighed in frustration before showing me the news on his laptop. Many photos of Eric and me were seen with different captions backing them. Some said I was just a client throwing myself at him; others said that I am his cousin, and others think I am likely to be his sister.“Are you kidding me?”“No one is kidding around, Lilly; you guys were supposed to be a couple, not siblings.”He ran his hands through his hair, and I saw how frustrated he was.“I really don’t know why you are blaming me for this. If this was a blind date, I swear I wouldn’t want to see Eric again.”“Why not?”“Because he sucks. Eric doesn’t know the first thing about dating or relationships, and neither do I. T
“Oh my God, you look beautiful, Lilly.”“I know, all thanks to you. Thanks, Jess, for making me look irresistible.”“You are welcome, sweetie.”Jess and I were getting pretty close. As for Eric, I haven't seen him since our date. All I was told was to meet up at his office.I sighed, feeling like I was the only one making this work, but I didn't really blame him. After all, this game will benefit me more than anyone else. I looked at myself one more time in the mirror before grabbing my handbag.Let's go make this night a success for me. I'll just think of everything as a nightmare that I will wake up from.I heard a knock on the door before Alex opened it and walked in."Wow, Jess, once again, I am very proud of you,” Alex said, but Jess glared at him.“I am not doing this for you, so keep your compliment."“You don't have to be rude; all you have to say is thank you."I watched as they both fought with their words while shooting daggers at each other with their eyes.“How long have
**Lily's POV**When I returned from using the restroom, I saw Alex talking with Vivian. Who the heck is she? What is her relationship with Eric?At the office, there was always this tension between them. It seems they are close, but they don't really get along.I waited patiently for her to leave before I approached Alex.“Lilly, I have been looking for you.”“Well, here I am, hungry and struggling to breathe in this God-forsaken dress.”“You look uncomfortable.”“I am glad you noticed because Eric's girlfriend just threatened me to leave him alone. And guess what? She offered something irresistible, and I nearly accepted it because that jerk doesn't deserve my time and effort.”I was mad, angry, and pissed. But I just couldn't say why I was angry that he wouldn't give me his time or even a smile.“Lilly, I need you to calm down. I know Eric is a handful, but Vivian is not going to let Eric marry any lady without going through her.”“And why is that? Is she his sister?” I asked with s
**Lilly's POV**What is going on? Did I do something wrong again? Where the heck is he taking me?We took the elevator to the fourth floor of the building. We ended up in a room, and I don't know why.“What is going on?”“Why are you suffering yourself?” His question left me confused.“Excuse me, what?” Instead of explaining, he started coming closer. I backed away but missed my step and nearly fell.He caught me before I could reach the ground. His hands were wrapped around my waist, and my hands grabbing onto his shirt to keep myself from falling. And here comes the tension as we stare at each other. I nearly got lost in his beautiful green eyes, but then I felt him loosening the rope on my dress.“What the heck do you think you are doing?" I pushed him off, immediately raising my hand to slap him, but he stopped my hand before it could hit his cheek.“I’m trying to make you comfortable. Why would you wear that dress if it is uncomfortable for you?”I wasn't really expecting that r
**Eric's POV**“How is she? Is it anything serious?”“I can't find anything, not even a sign of any allergies,” David said.“Then why did she pass out?”“I don't know; I’ll run a few tests on her and get back to you. And you need to relax; she is fine. It might have been due to stress.”“I just don't want her to get hurt.”“I can't believe you're this worried about her, yet you're the reason why she's stressed out,” Alex said with a frown.“What did I do wrong this time?”“Oh, really? Are you sure you don't know what you did?”“No, I don't.”“Fine, I’ll gladly list them for you. You’ve been the one stressing her out since she arrived here; you're either talking to a client or Vivian.”And to think she's not the only one stressed to the point of passing out.” I couldn't tell if he was angry at me because of what happened to Lilly or if he was angry that I was also stressing him out.“Alex, quit whining like a child. I'm sure Eric also had his own busy schedule.”“Of course, David, you
"Lilly, you need to eat slowly, or you might end up choking or, at worst, have indigestion.”“Don't worry, Jess, I am perfectly fine. I just need to finish this plate, then I'm done,” I replied with my mouth full. I was so hungry that I didn't bother with the fact that what Jess said might happen.“You sure do love food.”“I know, I love it a lot.”“How on earth are you able to maintain your shape if you consume this much food in one meal?”“Well, when I was living with my foster family, my foster mum barely fed me. I always had to wait for her children to eat and leave me with the leftovers.” I grabbed a cup of water and drank it down in one go.“She starved you?”“Yes, sometimes two days or three days before I would get one square meal.”“That explains a lot.” I could hear the pity in Jess’s voice, but I wasn't angry. Normally, I hate it when people give me that pitiful look but won't even try to help.“That’s why I eat at any given chance. Who knows, I might wake up and never find
Lily's POVIt felt like I had been swimming east for ages, every little sound sending a jolt of fear through me. The water was eerily silent, but no monstrous creatures had surfaced—yet. That didn’t mean they weren’t there, lurking beneath, waiting.I didn’t have much time. I needed to reach the Heart and return to Terranovae before it was too late.Drakemere was growing colder with every passing moment, the icy grip of the deep tightening around me. My mind had wandered, lost in anxious thoughts, when something suddenly caught my eye—a glimmering fragment of light against the dark water.A small, diamond-like stone was embedded in the jagged surface of a massive rock, its crystalline glow hypnotic, almost calling to me.Curiosity pulled me forward. I reached out, my fingers brushing against the smooth, shimmering surface, but as I shifted my gaze beyond the rock, I froze.A veil of liquid silver wavered before me, stretching across the depths like a living curtain of light.I gasped.
"Eric, this is insane! There is no way I’m letting you go to the Witch City just to seek their queen. It’s already obvious they’re planning to attack us like they did before, and you’re at your weakest moment. No, I think you should do as Tythorax said," Jess argued, her voice firm with defiance.I wasn’t surprised to find her waiting when I resurfaced from Drakemere. The moment she saw me, suspicion clouded her eyes, and she demanded to know why I had gone there. As we made our way back to the palace, I had no choice but to tell her everything.“I am not at my weakest point, Jess," I muttered, exhaling heavily. "I’m about to lose myself. That’s not weakness—it means I’m losing control over my powers. If I stay here, I become a danger to every demon in Terranovae.”Her expression hardened. “Then what about the Black Stone? What are you going to do about it?”“I don’t know,” I admitted, my gaze flickering toward the vine-covered barrier. The creeping plants had nearly sealed off the en
Before I could realize what was happening or remind myself that this wasn't real, I missed a step and slipped down the stairs. My body collided with the wooden steps, and pain shot through me like a bolt of lightning. When I finally hit the floor at the bottom of the staircase, leading into the sitting room, I couldn't move. The pain was paralyzing, making me question whether this was real or just another nightmare. I forced my eyes open, and that was when I saw it—a glimpse of a shadow standing in the darkest corner of the room, where the dim glow of light barely cast its reach.Panic surged through me as I pushed myself off the floor, backing away from the figure. My body screamed in agony, but I ignored it. A wave of cold air wrapped around me, sending chills down my spine, every hair on my body standing on end. From the size of the figure, I could tell it wasn't an adult—but a child. A girl."Who are you?" My voice came out small, unsteady, weak—barely a whisper."Me?" she echoed,
“What do you mean? Are you saying the Water Demon Princess is alive?” I asked, waiting impatiently for his reply.“Great, so now who am I even talking to? Because I don’t understand a thing,” Tythorax complained, but I was more focused on whether Eric’s biological mother was truly alive.“Yes, she is still alive. I thought you, of all people, would know that,” Tythorax finally answered.“I never expected her to be.” I shook my head, disbelief tightening my chest. “You and I both know how devastated she was after being forced to leave her baby at the doorstep of some random humans. I don’t even know if I should say Eric and I were lucky to end up with Mr. and Mrs. Sarton.”Memories of that fateful night came rushing back, burning through me like wildfire. I could still see the agony on the princess’s face as she made her way to Drakemere, pleading for her baby’s life. Even when she was warned of the consequences, she still agreed to them.No mother willingly gives birth only to abandon
We swam as fast as we could, the icy water pressing against us like an unrelenting force. Time felt endless, every stroke stretching into eternity, but finally, after what seemed like forever, we arrived. The first thing I noticed was the storm—a raging, untamed force swirling right in front of us. The water churned violently, reacting to our presence with a low, menacing rumble. I wasn’t surprised that the sea itself seemed to resist us, but what unsettled me was why the sea god had chosen to place a storm here, turning it into the first trial to reach the heart. The sheer power of it sent a shiver down my spine, a stark reminder of the impossible task ahead."This is it," Jess murmured beside me. "The Forbidden Abyss."I exhaled, staring at the churning waters. "It looks far more terrifying now that I’m actually here. When Tythorax spoke of it, it seemed like a legend—now it feels like a death sentence." My voice wavered slightly, but I steadied myself. "I guess this is my first tri
"Does this mean the power barrier created by Drakemere won’t be enough to stop them?" Jess asked, pacing anxiously across the room."You and I both know it takes Terranovae’s full barrier power to keep the witches out. The fragment that remains here might hold back the creatures, but definitely not the witches."Jess let out a heavy sigh, frustration evident in every step she took. But my attention remained fixed on Lily. She stood still, lost in her own thoughts, the fear in her eyes something I never wanted to see. I had hoped to shield her from this truth, to spare her the weight of it, but keeping it from her wouldn’t have been right either.“This is bad,” Alex muttered under his breath."Jess, you know what to do. Make sure Lily reaches the Abyss safely—please, look after her for me," I said, my voice carrying a silent plea. Jess gave me a firm nod of assurance."Hey, Lily," I called gently, taking her hands in mine."I never wanted you to worry about this—that’s why I didn’t men
“You did a great job,” I said, taking her hand and offering an encouraging smile. She returned it, but there was a heaviness in her eyes that refused to lift.“You think? I just hope this is a new beginning for all of them,” she murmured, her voice laced with worry. It wasn’t just her voice—her entire expression carried the weight of uncertainty.“You worry too much. You just managed to get all of Terranovae’s leaders to work together—something that hasn’t happened in decades,” I reminded her. She needed to believe in herself if she was going to make it to the Abyss of Vareth. That place required strength, not doubt.“I wouldn’t have been able to pull it off without Jess,” she admitted with a heavy sigh. Then, after a brief pause, her expression shifted. “But there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”“Okay, ask me anything,” I said, giving her a small nod of encouragement.“Can you really not come with me to the Abyss of Vareth?” she asked, her eyes locking onto mine, pleading.
“Enough!” I screamed, my voice ringing through the hall, sharp and commanding. The room fell into silence as I finally drew their attention back to me.“What is wrong with all of you? Why can’t you work together for once to save our home? The chaos that has fallen upon us is the result of your petty disputes and the foolish mistakes of our forefathers—mistakes they passed down to each generation! If they hadn’t driven the dragons away, if Drakemere were still here in Terranovae, none of this would be happening! But it did. And now, instead of bickering like fools, put aside your arrogance and fight for what truly matters!"I let my gaze sweep over them, my heart pounding in my chest. “Yes, I am Princess Jessandria, the runaway princess. But at least I am better than every single one of you here. Do you know why? Because I love Terranovae! And I would give my life to ensure its safety!” My voice shook with passion, the weight of my words pressing into the heavy silence.“I left Terrano
As we approached, the sheer grandeur of the castle became even more overwhelming. The towering gates, adorned with intricate silver filigree and engraved with the ancient symbols of the four demon clans, loomed over us like silent sentinels. The air was thick with tension, an oppressive weight pressing down on the demons who lingered outside their homes. Their anxious gazes followed us, their whispers barely audible, as though they feared even the wind would carry their secrets to unwanted ears. It felt as if we carried the fate of Terranovae on our shoulders. When we reached the gate, the guards immediately stepped forward, blocking our path. Jess wasted no time; she jumped off the horse with a determined stride, her presence alone demanding attention. The moment they recognized her, they bowed deeply, a show of respect, yet not a single one of them moved aside."I need to speak to my father. Now!" Jess commanded, her voice cutting through the heavy air like a blade.“We were strictl
