Lyra

“Are you sure about what you’re saying?” I asked quietly, my eyes locked on Rixa’s pale face. “Are you sure you’re willing to do anything to get Damian? Because you’re known for being dramatic, and I need to be certain this isn’t some twisted part of his plan.”

The room was silent except for the faint beeping of the medical machine beside her bed.

Rixa swallowed. Her lips trembled. Her fingers twitched weakly against the sheets.

“Yes,” she whispered. “I’m willing to do anything. I don’t have a choice anymore. If I want to get well… if I want to live… I have to help you.”

Her voice sounded hollow. Like something inside her had already broken. For a long moment, I just stared at her. And for the first time since I walked into that room, I believed her.

The doctor stepped forward gently. “She needs to rest now.”

Nick nodded immediately. “We understand.”

I hesitated, still watching Rixa’s face. She looked exhausted, like fear had drained every ounce of strength from her body.

  • FIRST NIGHT WITH THE HOCKEY ALPHA    Chapter 173

LyraThe tears fell before I realized they were there. They slid down my cheeks quietly like my body had decided to betray me on its own. I wiped at them with the back of my hand, annoyed more than embarrassed. Crying felt useless right now. It didn’t change anything. It didn’t rewind time. It didn’t pull Nick back from the edge. But this…this hurt differently. This was the first time someone had looked me in the eyes and told me they hated me. And standing there, with Ben’s words still hanging in the air, something ugly and honest cracked open inside me.This is what I did to Nick. The realization hit hard, knocking the air out of my chest. This…this pain, this raw, burning thing, this was what I’d left him with. I had walked away and let him sit with this kind of hurt for a whole year.My vision blurred, and when I blinked, more tears spilled over.My head snapped up. “You don’t know the whole story,” I said, my voice shaking but loud enough to cut through the silence. “So you don’t

Lyra“So what do we do now?” The words slipped out of me before I could stop them. They sounded almost childish. My gaze locked on Ben’s face, searching for certainty I didn’t have.“How do we start all this?” I asked again. “What do we do next?”Ben stared back at me like I’d just asked the most ridiculous question in the world.“You’re seriously asking me that?” he said slowly. My jaw tightened. “Yes. I am.”His hand went to his head, fingers threading through his hair, tugging like he was holding himself together by force. He turned away for a second, breathing hard, then faced me again.“You don’t know what to do?” he asked. “Lyra, you stood there and said this was the only solution. You were so sure. So convinced.”“I was sure it could work,” I shot back. “Not that I knew how.”Ben let out a sharp laugh. There was no humor in it. “So what do we do next?” he echoed mockingly. “How do we magically transfer Nick’s soul into a child’s body? Is that what you’re asking me?”My chest

Lyra“What the hell, Ben?” I snapped the moment I saw him. “You told me to…” Ben was saying, but I didn't even let him finish the sentence. My hand shot out grabbing him in, and slamming the door shut, cutting off the figure standing outside before they could say another word. The sound echoed through the house, loud and final, and my heart started racing like I’d just done something unforgivable.I spun around.“Ben,” I said, my voice shaking now, disbelief pouring out of me. “That is a child.”Ben froze where he stood.“That’s a kid,” I repeated, louder. “What do you mean you found a human? That’s not a human…that’s a baby.”“A baby?” Ben frowned. “Lyra, he’s not…”“He’s like fourteen. Fifteen at most,” I cut in, my chest rising fast. “He still looks like he’s figuring out algebra and acne. What do you expect me to do with that?”Ben opened his mouth, I didn’t let him speak.“Why would you bring a child here?” I demanded. “Why would you load a kid into this mess like it’s nothing?”

Lyra“All right,” Ben said at last, voice low, tired. “I still have to think about this.”Think?? The word scraped against my nerves like sandpaper.I let out a short laugh, sharp and humorless, my back still to him. My hands were clenched so tight my palms hurt. “Think about what?” I asked. My voice sounded calm, which felt almost insulting considering the storm tearing through my chest. “Nick is literally dying, and you’re standing here telling me you need time to think.”I finally turned around. Ben flinched, his eyes met mine, cautious now, guarded.“What exactly are you planning to think about?” I continued, taking a step toward him. “Walk me through it. I’m curious. Are you thinking about the weather? About how uncomfortable this makes you? Or are you thinking of standing around until he stops breathing?”“That’s not fair,” Ben said.I laughed again. Louder this time. “Fair?” I repeated. “You want to talk to me about fair?”My chest rose and fell too fast. I could feel my puls

LyraBen’s eyes widened as he stared at me, he took a slow step closer to me, his voice low but edged with disbelief. “Do you really think Nick would want this?”I didn’t answer immediately. My jaw tightened as I folded my arms around myself, nails digging into my skin.Ben shook his head, running a hand through his hair. “Nick would be disappointed,” he said. “If he knew this was your plan. If he knew this is what you want to do to him.”Each word landed heavy.“He wouldn’t want this,” Ben continued, his voice firmer now. “Not from you.”I swallowed hard, my throat burning.“For years,” Ben went on, pacing slowly, “he’s been managing his health, while….I closed my eyes. “Waiting for you to come back to him,” Ben said quietly. My chest tightened painfully.“I think the happiest time of his life,” Ben said, stopping in front of me, “was when you came back. When he realized you were his Lyra."My breath hitched.“The one he’d been waiting for,” Ben added. “That moment? That was everyth

Lyra“Oh… finally.”The words slipped out of me the second I collapsed into the chair in Nick’s vacation house. My body sagged like it had been carrying something far heavier than weight. My arms rested uselessly in my lap, but my mind refused to sit still. It ran in frantic circles, replaying everything, I didn’t want to see again. The house felt too quiet. I rubbed my palms against my thighs, trying to ground myself, but my fingers wouldn’t stop shaking. My eyes stayed glued to the hallway, counting the seconds Ben had been gone. Every creak of the house made my heart jump. Then footsteps. Ben stepped out of the room.I straightened immediately, my breath hitching. His face told me everything before his mouth opened. His jaw was tight, his eyes tired, like he’d aged ten years in the last hour.“I already put Nick in the room,” he said carefully. My stomach dropped. “You can’t go in there,” Ben continued, his voice low. “Not right now.”“Why?” The word slipped out fast, sharp. My fi
