CHAPTER 22

last update publish date: 2026-06-19 22:23:46

"They found Thomas's DNA results."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The penthouse seemed to shrink around them.

Julian stood frozen beside the table, his phone clenched tightly in one hand.

The color had completely drained from his face.

Dani's pulse thundered.

"And they're not mine."

The words echoed through the room.

Not mine.

Not mine.

Not mine.

For a moment, nobody seemed capable of understanding what that meant.

Then Stella sat down very slowly.

As though her legs had suddenly lost strength.

Dani looked between them.

Confused.

Terrified.

Trying to piece together a puzzle that seemed to gain new pieces every minute.

"What does that mean?"

Julian's eyes remained fixed on the message.

"It means Thomas tested someone else's DNA."

His voice sounded distant.

Distracted.

As though his mind was racing through possibilities.

Calculating.

Recalculating.

Searching.

Dani swallowed.

"If he wasn't testing you..."

Her voice trailed off.

Because there was only one obvious possibility left.

Stella.

The room went silent.

Julian slowly looked toward his wife.

And Stella didn't deny it.

Didn't laugh.

Didn't roll her eyes.

Didn't call the idea ridiculous.

She simply stared at the photograph lying on the table.

The one labeled:

ACTUAL MOTHER IDENTIFIED

Fear tightened around Dani's chest.

Because Stella's silence felt louder than words.

Much louder.

---

Twenty minutes later, the three of them sat around the dining table.

Nobody had suggested it.

Nobody had planned it.

Yet somehow they had all gravitated there.

As though sitting down might make the situation less insane.

It didn't.

The photograph remained in the center of the table.

An accusation.

A threat.

A mystery.

Julian finally broke the silence.

"Tell me everything."

Stella laughed bitterly.

"There isn't an everything."

His expression hardened.

"Don't do that."

"Do what?"

"Pretend."

The word cracked through the room.

Sharp.

Cold.

Dangerous.

Dani had never seen him like this.

Not with Stella.

Not with anyone.

Julian leaned forward.

"Thomas Reed requested DNA testing."

A pause.

"You knew."

Stella looked away.

A tiny movement.

Yet enough.

Enough to answer the question.

Julian's jaw tightened.

"You knew."

This time it wasn't a question.

Stella closed her eyes.

Then nodded once.

The movement seemed to cost her something.

Immediately, the atmosphere shifted.

Because now there was confirmation.

A secret.

A real secret.

Something Stella had hidden.

Dani's heart hammered.

"What DNA test?"

Stella opened her eyes.

And for the first time since arriving at the penthouse...

She looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not manipulative.

Not cruel.

Just tired.

Deeply tired.

"The test involved my mother."

The answer stunned everyone.

Including Dani.

Because that wasn't where she'd expected this to go.

At all.

Julian frowned.

"What?"

Stella laughed softly.

The sound held no humor.

"My mother wasn't supposed to be able to have children."

The room went still.

Very still.

Dani felt a chill.

Because suddenly this wasn't sounding like corporate corruption anymore.

This sounded like family warfare.

The worst kind.

---

Stella stood.

Walked toward the windows.

Looked out at the city.

For several seconds she remained silent.

Then she began speaking.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like someone opening old wounds.

"When I was nineteen, I overheard an argument."

Nobody interrupted.

Nobody dared.

"My mother and Victor Vance."

Julian immediately stiffened.

His father.

The dead patriarch.

The man whose shadow still seemed to haunt every room.

"They didn't know I was listening."

Stella's gaze remained fixed on the city lights.

"I heard words."

A pause.

"'Mistake.'"

Another pause.

"'Agreement.'"

Then:

"'Child.'"

Dani felt her pulse quicken.

Because suddenly those words sounded familiar.

Very familiar.

The photograph.

The agreement begins.

Everything was connecting.

Or trying to.

"I never forgot it."

Stella turned back toward them.

Her expression unreadable.

"I spent years trying to find out what they meant."

Julian stared at her.

Silent.

Listening.

And perhaps realizing that he didn't know his wife nearly as well as he thought.

Stella continued.

"Thomas was the first person who ever took my suspicions seriously."

That got Dani's attention immediately.

"You trusted him?"

Stella smiled sadly.

"More than I should have."

The answer landed heavily.

Because now Thomas Reed wasn't just a dead investigator.

He was someone Stella had actively worked with.

Someone she had trusted.

Someone who had died.

---

The silence that followed felt endless.

Then Julian's phone vibrated again.

Everyone froze.

Immediately.

The unknown sender.

Again.

It had to be.

Julian looked at the screen.

His expression darkened.

Then he passed the phone across the table.

To Dani.

Her stomach tightened.

Slowly, she looked.

The message contained an image.

Another photograph.

Old.

Damaged.

Black and white.

The quality was terrible.

Yet the faces remained recognizable.

Victor Vance.

Stella's mother.

And another woman.

A woman Dani didn't recognize.

Beneath the image sat a handwritten caption.

One child belonged to the wrong mother.

A chill swept through the room.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because the implication was horrifying.

A switched child.

A hidden identity.

A decades-old deception.

The kind capable of destroying families.

Companies.

Legacies.

Everything.

Stella looked physically ill.

Julian looked furious.

And Dani felt completely lost.

Then another message arrived.

This one contained text.

Just text.

No photographs.

No clues.

No riddles.

Only one sentence.

One direct sentence.

Ask Stella what happened in Room 214.

The color vanished from Stella's face.

Instantly.

Dani noticed.

Julian noticed.

Everyone noticed.

The reaction was impossible to miss.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not anxiety.

Not concern.

Fear.

Julian slowly lowered his phone.

"What happened in Room 214?"

Stella didn't answer.

The silence stretched.

Longer.

Longer.

Longer.

Then she whispered:

"No."

The word barely reached them.

Julian stood.

Dangerously calm.

"What happened?"

Stella backed away.

One step.

Then another.

Her eyes wide.

Her breathing uneven.

The transformation shocked Dani.

Because Stella never lost control.

Never.

Until now.

Finally, Stella shook her head.

"No."

Julian moved closer.

"Tell me."

And then Stella broke.

Not completely.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Enough for Dani to realize that whatever happened in Room 214 was worse than anything they'd uncovered so far.

"It was supposed to stay buried."

The words came out trembling.

Raw.

Honest.

The room went silent.

Julian's voice dropped lower.

"What was?"

Stella closed her eyes.

Then opened them again.

And the terror inside them made Dani's blood run cold.

"Thomas found the hospital records."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because suddenly Room 214 wasn't a hotel room.

Or a meeting room.

Or an office.

It was a hospital room.

A delivery room.

A place where babies were born.

A place where identities began.

Dani felt her pulse pounding violently.

Because she already knew where this was going.

Even before Stella said the next words.

"The babies were switched."

The world stopped.

Completely.

Silence consumed the penthouse.

Absolute silence.

Then Julian whispered:

"What babies?"

Stella looked directly at him.

Tears gathering in her eyes for the first time.

Then she delivered the answer.

And everything changed.

"You and me."

No one had time to react.

No one had time to process.

Because at that exact moment, the penthouse lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Every light.

Every screen.

Every appliance.

Gone.

The city skyline vanished beyond the windows.

The emergency systems failed.

Everything died.

Then a voice echoed through the darkness.

Not through a phone.

Not through a speaker.

Inside the penthouse.

Close.

Very close.

The same distorted voice.

The same nightmare.

The same person.

And this time they were inside.

"Finally."

A pause.

Then:

"Now we can talk."
