The bar was dimly lit, shadows curling around the corners while the low hum of conversations filled the air. River sat at the counter, his broad shoulders hunched forward as if the weight of the world was pressing on them. His fingers tapped restlessly on the wooden surface.

“Beer,” he muttered, voice low and gruff.

The barman nodded and slid a cold bottle his way. River twisted the cap off with one hand and took a long gulp. The bitter taste filled his mouth, but it did little to drown out the thoughts crashing inside his head.

Everything is falling apart.

His chest tightened as he thought of Jace, Eli, the threats… it was too much. He rubbed his temple and sighed heavily.

“You look like you need something stronger than that.”

The voice came from his right. It was smooth and familiar. Too familiar.

River turned his head slowly, his stomach dropping when he saw who it was.

Cole.

River groaned inwardly. Of all the people in the world, why him?

“What the hell are you doing here?” River

Sasha tapped her nails curiously on her hand as she stared at River standing outside her door. He shifted from one foot to the other, looking like a guilty teenager caught sneaking out of school.River scratched his head. “Come on, Sasha. Please let me in.”Sasha let out a dramatic groan and pulled the door wider. “Fine. But don’t bring your storm cloud energy into my place. I just vacuumed.”River stepped inside, his boots heavy on her polished floor. His sharp eyes darted around, taking in the living room. The walls were a soft pink, with framed art pieces and delicate fairy lights strung across the shelves. A white rug lay in the center, and pastel throw pillows covered the couch.River frowned, tilting his head. “It looks like a rainbow threw up in here.”Sasha gasped and slapped his arm lightly. “Excuse you! This is an aesthetic. It’s called cozy chic, not that you’d understand.”River smirked faintly and dropped onto the couch with a loud thud, sinking into the mountain of pillo

River’s footsteps echoed against the marble floor as he walked in. The silence of the place was crushing. From the corner of his eye, he spotted Jace standing on the balcony, his tall frame silhouetted against the glowing skyline. The breeze lifted Jace’s hair, but his body was stiff, rigid, like stone.River froze in the doorway, his heart hammering. What do I even say? His throat was dry. Every word he rehearsed in his mind sounded useless. But he couldn’t just stand there. Finally, he forced himself to move, each step heavier than the last.“Jace,” River called softly, his voice breaking.Jace turned slowly. His eyes were sharp, colder than River had ever seen them and before River could say anything more, Jace’s hand flew.Slap! The sound cracked through the quiet air, echoing painfully in River’s chest. His jaw clenched tightly, but he didn’t move. He had expected anger. He had expected yelling. But not this, not the sting of Jace’s hand against his face.“Jace....” River began,

The boardroom was silent. The long mahogany table stretched between them, lined with Maddox Enterprises’ directors, all watching, all waiting. Jace sat at one end, his back straight, his jaw locked tight. At the other end sat Victor, smugness practically dripping off him.Victor leaned back in his chair and laced his fingers together. “It’s time to stop pretending, Jace. You’re not fit to run this company anymore.”Murmurs broke out around the table.Jace’s eyes snapped up, cold and sharp. “You don’t get to decide that.”“I don’t have to,” Victor replied smoothly. “Everyone in this room can see it. You’ve been distracted, weak. You let incidents slip through your fingers, your enemies strike right under your nose. Maddox Enterprises can’t afford a leader who’s… broken.”A bitter laugh escaped Jace’s throat. “Broken? You call me broken because I won’t play your little games? Because I won’t sell my soul for greed the way you do?”“Call it what you want,” Victor said, his smile widening

Jace stood by the window of his penthouse, looking out at the lights below. His reflection in the glass looked softer than usual, his smile still lingering from earlier. He couldn’t remember the last time he had laughed so much, real laughter, the kind that shook his chest instead of the polished kind he gave cameras.Behind him, River was stretched out on the couch. His head rested back, one arm draped lazily over the cushions. He looked half-asleep, but Jace knew better. River was always alert, even when his eyes were closed.“You’re staring again,” River’s voice came, low and calm.Jace turned with a grin. “You make it sound like a crime.”“It might be.” River cracked an eye open. “Depends who’s watching.”Jace padded across the room and flopped down beside him. “Well, it’s just you and me and unless my couch has cameras, I think we’re safe.”River gave him a dry look. “Don’t joke about cameras.”Jace leaned closer, smirking. “You’re paranoid.”“I’m careful,” River corrected.“Mm-h

  • Falling For The Billionaire I Was Hired to Protect    Too Close For Comfort

The next morning, River woke before the sun was fully up. He lay still for a while, listening to Jace’s slow, even breathing. The man’s face was turned toward him, lashes dark against his skin, lips parted slightly. River couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at his mouth. Last night had been… different. It had been everything he secretly wanted and everything he feared. His fingers itched to touch Jace’s cheek, but he stopped himself. He couldn’t afford to get too carried away. Their love was forbidden and complicated. He knew the world outside wouldn’t understand, and neither would the enemies that circled them.Jace stirred, his eyes fluttering open. His voice was still husky from sleep. “You’re awake already?”River shifted slightly, covering up his thoughts with a shrug. “Couldn’t sleep.”Jace frowned softly. “You worry too much.”River smirked to ease the tension. “And you don’t worry enough.”That made Jace chuckle as he sat up against the pillows. “Maybe. But you know what
