Chapter 4

Author: Reneemoon
The next day, I wheeled my suitcase to the front gate, only to find that the security scanner no longer recognized my fingerprint.

Nearby, servants stopped and whispered, pointing in my direction.

"The security system runs on the highest Family clearance. The new Donna just updated it and deleted all unauthorized prints..."

"So Mrs. Rizzo has been cast out of the Family?"

"She brought it on herself. If she hadn't crossed the Don, he never would have turned his back on her."

I took a deep breath and turned toward the secret passage, but Caterina appeared with a wine glass in hand.

She walked closer, step by step, and her gaze lingered on my midsection.

"Julia... is that a bump? Are you pregnant too?"

I ignored her and kept walking, but she went on without waiting for a reply.

"What a shame. Salvatore still had a shred of affection left for you, but you were too stupid and threw away your last card."

She flashed a victor's smile and rubbed her own belly.

"All you can do is watch my child be born as the heir to the Rizzo Family, while yours will spend its entire life as a bastard no one can acknowledge.

"When you think about it, your father died for nothing. He couldn't even keep you safe. Isn't that pathetic?"

My feet locked to the ground. I spun around, fury surging through me.

"You don't get to talk about him!"

But the instant the words left my mouth, her body swayed and she stumbled straight into my suitcase.

My father's belongings spilled across the ground with a crash.

And the wine in Caterina's hand splashed right onto his photograph.

"Aah! My stomach!"

Salvatore came charging out of the house.

He took one look at Caterina on the ground clutching her belly, and his gaze turned cold and sharp as it locked onto me.

"Julia, will you only be satisfied when you've killed Caterina?"

He pointed at my father's shattered photo album on the ground.

"Where's the dignity and honor your father taught you? Is this what he raised you for, to bully a defenseless pregnant woman? Disgusting!"

I clenched my jaw so hard I tasted blood, and summoned every ounce of willpower to stay calm.

"If I'm so despicable in your eyes, then step aside and let me leave."

Salvatore paused. His gaze drifted to my luggage, and he looked away with obvious irritation.

"That's not what I meant. Just stop making a scene..."

Bang!

A gunshot shattered the air, cutting him off.

Several hooded men emerged from the secret passage, blades glinting in their hands.

Remnants of the Santoro Family!

My pupils contracted. Instinct took over. I rolled across the ground and drew the gun from inside my jacket.

Salvatore scooped Caterina into his arms and bolted for the foyer.

The leader spotted me immediately and barked an order. They all closed in on me at once.

In that split second between life and death, Salvatore turned back.

"Julia, you're a better fighter than anyone here. You'll be fine. Hold them off for a bit. Caterina is pregnant. I have to get her out first!"

I could only watch as he locked the front gate behind him. I stood there, stunned for a moment, then laughed quietly.

Salvatore, have you forgotten?

In yesterday's gamble, I emptied every round in this gun. You knew that.

So by locking that gate, you've left me here to die.

A blade came swinging at me, slicing through the air.

I didn't dodge. Instead, I pivoted, and in the instant the blade nearly grazed my cheek, I drove my foot into his wrist with everything I had.

He screamed. His grip gave out, and the blade clattered heavily to the floor.

My eyes narrowed. I dove for the blade and brought it down hard.

Blood pooled outward. He hit the ground and didn't move again.

I seized the handle, wiped the blood from the blade with my fingertips, and turned a cold gaze on the rest of them.

"Come on. Let's see who walks out of here."

...

Ten minutes later, after settling the shaken Caterina, Salvatore rushed back to the estate with his men.

But when his men kicked open the front door, the sight before him turned him to stone.

Inside, the attackers lay sprawled in pools of blood, crimson gashes criss-crossing their bodies.

Not a soul in sight.

Salvatore's breathing went ragged. He tore through the bedroom, the storage room, then charged straight into the secret passage.

Nothing.

He walked slowly back to the living room and saw a single sheet of white paper on the dining table.

His pupils contracted. He reached out and picked it up.

It was a pregnancy report.

[Julia Rizzo. Test result: six weeks pregnant.]

His voice cracked, like sandpaper grinding over rusted iron.I didn't stop. I pulled the zipper all the way shut."Just hear me out..."He rushed in, shut the door behind him, and pressed his back against it, as if afraid I'd bolt."Julia, what am I supposed to do?"You've never given me a straight answer," he said, his voice shaking. "How could I not worry? That's why I monitored your calls... What if you disappeared again?"I stopped and looked at him."That's exactly why I'm leaving."He went still."Salvatore, you've never seen me as a real person." My voice was quiet. "This is just your possessiveness talking. You're not afraid of losing me. You just can't stand that I don't want you anymore."His mouth opened. His throat worked.I didn't wait for him to argue.I pulled my father's old revolver from the hidden compartment of my suitcase."Let's make another bet." I set the gun on the table, my fingers resting on the cold metal. "One bullet. Same as before."He stared at the gun, h

He handed me a black folder bearing the seals of all five Families. The first page formally cleared my parents. The second stripped Caterina of every protection and inheritance right she had ever claimed. After the child was born, she would spend the rest of her life in a maximum-security prison controlled by the Commission."I'm sorry," Salvatore said. "For believing her. For judging your father. For making you carry the truth alone. For choosing her until it cost you our child."I closed the folder."Clearing my parents' names is justice. It is not forgiveness."A silence settled between us."Marcus is a good guy."He said it suddenly. His voice was low, as if the words had been dragged from deep in his throat.I glanced at him."Yeah," I said. "He wouldn't rush off to protect someone else while I was bleeding out. He wouldn't lock me out when I needed him most. He wouldn't accuse me of terrorizing another woman out of jealousy."Salvatore's lip trembled."I know I can't go back to h

By the time Marcus and his men rushed over, I already had Caterina's gun hand pinned under my boot.He scanned the scene, crouched beside Salvatore, and checked the wound. Quick. Efficient."Bullet went clean through. Didn't hit the artery. But he's lost a lot of blood." He looked up at me. "You okay?""I'm fine."I said.Marcus didn't give Salvatore on the ground a second glance. He just called for his men to drag Caterina up and haul her to the camp's holding cell. Then he re-dressed Salvatore's bandage himself, firm but measured, the way he would handle any ordinary casualty."Thank you," Salvatore rasped.Marcus grunted, stood up, and brushed the dust off his hands. Then he turned to me."Mess hall's got beef stew tonight. Coming?"I nodded. He left.Just me and Salvatore.I looked down at him.He was propped against the wall, white as paper, sweat sliding down his forehead, but his eyes hadn't left me."Why did you do that?"I asked, my voice quiet. He opened his mouth. Blood seep

His mouth opened. His throat worked, hard."What about the baby?"The question came suddenly, barely above a whisper.I stopped.A long silence."Gone."The color drained from his face. His lips trembled, unable to form words.I watched his expression and felt something die a little inside me too, but I no longer had the strength to hurt over it."How?"He asked."You don't need to know."I turned and walked away.On the fifth evening, I had just returned from a reconnaissance mission. Then I heard the sound.I jerked my head up.Caterina charged out from behind an abandoned pickup truck off to the side. She was gaunt, her hair tangled and yellowed, her face streaked with grime, but her eyes were blazing, terrifyingly bright. The look of someone pushed past the edge of madness. She had a gun in her hand.I recognized it.It was the pistol Salvatore kept in his study. Her finger was already on the trigger, the barrel aimed at my chest.Time slowed.I could see her finger tightening on t

The West African sun was brutal.Every morning I opened my eyes and didn't have to think about whose dinner to prepare, whose call to wait for, whose mood to read. My belly was flat. The baby was gone. I had lost it on the run.I never even cried. I just woke up one night and found my pillow soaked.I worked as a mercenary here.Take a job. Collect the pay. Drink with the crew. Let the red earth bake the skin off my face.No one called me "Donna." No one mentioned the Rizzo Family. My name was Julia. Just Julia. That was enough.I first noticed him five months after I arrived.I was coming out of the barracks, heading to the armory to pick up next week's gear, when I looked up and saw him standing outside the iron gate.He had lost a lot of weight. His stubble was overgrown, the hollows beneath his eyes carved deep, and his fair skin was red and peeling from the West African sun.He wore a wrinkled shirt and stood there like a stake driven into the earth, motionless. The guards leveled

"You arranged the attack on her." Every word ground through his teeth. "You nearly got her killed at the estate!"The force on her jaw made Caterina's tears burst out instantly, but she didn't struggle."And you?" Caterina laughed through her tears. "Are you any better? You think you're some kind of saint? You're the one who pushed her out there!"Salvatore released her.He staggered back two steps, like a cornered animal, and took two heaving breaths before heading for the door."Guards." He stopped in the doorway, his voice lethal. "Lock her up. No one lets her out without my say-so!"The door shut behind him.Caterina's screams came from inside, each one sharper than the last. But Salvatore didn't look back.He walked to the end of the hallway and leaned against the wall.Blood from his knuckles dripped onto the floor. One drop. Two.He suddenly remembered the moment he had ripped the silver crest from Julia and told her she could have it back "when she'd come to her senses."He rem
