Chapter 3

Penulis: Mango Fruitcake
All afternoon, I curled up in my bedroom, yet the laughter from the living room rang far too clearly.

When I looked in on them, I saw Ellis smiling as Russell fed her grapes.

“You’ve injured your arm… I’m here to take care of you and ease your burdens.”

“I need you to ease more than just that. Tonight, help me shower. That would truly ease my burdens.”

I turned away, refusing to listen, holding back the tears in my eyes.

I gathered several documents, planning to return to the company, but just as I reached the stairs, Ellis called out to me.

After a moment’s hesitation, she spoke.

“I’ve just made Russell my assistant. He’s got to work on a lot of things, and as Vice President, you should communicate with him more.

“Hand over the project you’re working on to Russell. You can take the chance to rest.”

Her casual tone sent a jolt through my chest.

I remembered all those nights I drank with the client to secure that project.

My nose prickled.

Was Ellis really giving away the results of my hard work so easily?

My clenched fist loosened again.

I drew a long breath and agreed.

She seemed surprised that I accepted so quickly.

“This is also a chance for Russell to grow. Tonight, I booked a table at your favorite Asian restaurant.”

Before I could reply, Ellis walked out with Russell.

As she left, Russell flashed a triumphant smile at me.

When I arrived at the restaurant, I finally understood.

The entire table was full of dishes, yet not a single one I liked.

Ellis even ordered seafood soup, which I was allergic to, and Russell ate it with great enthusiasm.

I didn’t touch my cutlery.

When Ellis stepped out to take a call, Russell showed his true colors, deliberately lifting the seafood soup and moving it toward me.

The bowl and spoons clattered sharply as he cried out in pain, his eyes reddening.

At that moment, Ellis pushed open the door and saw the scene.

Without giving me a chance to explain, she blamed me and demanded to know why I was so petty.

I pressed my lips together and spoke slowly.

“I didn’t do it. He moved the soup toward me himself. And I’m allergic to seafood. Don’t remember?”

Only then did Ellis seem to recall, but she remained stubborn.

She tossed out a curt, “Take care of yourself,” and left without looking back.

Night brought a sudden downpour, and as expected, I was drenched through.

By the time I returned to the villa, it was already late.

Through the half-closed door, I heard the sound of breathy, intimate gasps.

I froze, and then Russell opened the door with a sly smile.

“I didn’t expect a loyal little lapdog like you to eavesdrop. What’s wrong? Miss Stewart hasn’t let you touch her in three years, has she? Are you jealous?”

With his smugness, his bathrobe shifted, revealing the red marks scattered across his skin.

Rage made my body unsteady.

I tried to leave, but Russell shoved me, and I fell heavily to the floor as he shut the door again.

“Since you love listening so much, don’t leave tonight. Enjoy hearing exactly how I ease Miss Stewart’s burdens!”

I pushed myself up using the wall.

My injured right leg throbbed in the damp weather, each step more difficult than the last.

By the time I returned to my room, twenty minutes had passed.

I stared blankly at the ceiling before realizing my tears had already dried on my face.

The next morning, I went downstairs with swollen eyes, only to find the entire living room empty.

As I hesitated, a message arrived from an unfamiliar account.

It was a video of Ellis tied up, crying, and begging me to save her.

The sender provided an address and threatened to kill her if I delayed.

After wavering again and again, I rushed to the outskirts of the city.

The moment I stepped into the warehouse, a rope tightened around my neck from behind.

I was bound and stuffed into a burlap sack.

Crude laughter echoed beside my ears.

Someone kicked me, leaving me bruised from head to toe.

When thick flames rose around us, I finally broke free of the restraints and crawled out.

In that moment, all I felt was release.

My phone rang again.

It was an audio message from Russell.

“Make sure the kidnapping is convincing. Do everything exactly as instructed,” said a voice that sounded a lot like Ellis.

Ellis stood unsteadily and looked at me with a deep, hesitant gaze before she finally spoke.“The company ran into some trouble recently. I came to ask for your help. I had no other choice…”Ellis lowered her eyes. When I stayed silent, she continued on her own and explained how Sandra and Russell worked together to drain the company’s assets.“You and I weren’t related in any way. Why should I help you? I believe you can solve it yourself,” I said quietly.Ellis reached out in agitation, trying to grab my arm. I dodged again. She tried to step forward, but Margo splashed a cup of water at her.“Enough is enough. This is the third time. “If you don’t want your company to fall into even worse ruin, stop trying to play tricks on Jon!”Ellis left in disarray. Margo winked at me, and I pulled her into an embrace, surprising her a little. She brushed a kiss against my chin.Smiling, I deepened the kiss. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a sliver of Ellis’s purple dre

A double entendre left Ellis’s face darkened, though she quickly shifted the topic. I remained unmoved. At the intersection ahead, several cars encircled Ellis’s vehicle. Margo forced her to let me out. She furrowed her brow, stepped out, and as the car door closed, Margo executed a swift maneuver, allowing me to exit quickly.“Ellis,” I said firmly, “I’m telling you again, we have nothing to do with each other. I already have a wife, and it is—and always will be—Margo.”Margo shot me a delighted glance, intertwined our fingers, while Ellis’s eyes darkened with bitterness. She tried to step forward, but the bodyguards held her back firmly. After that, Ellis refused to give up. For the next two weeks, she sent flowers and gifts daily. Even when I discarded them, she persisted. After ordering the housekeeper to throw away another batch, Ellis called.“After all these days, are you pretending to ignore my attempts to win you back? My care for you…”“I’ll warn you once mo

Ellis’s embrace carried a chill, her usually meticulously cared-for hair looked dry, and even with makeup, her fatigue remained visible.I pushed her away. “Show some respect,” I said. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, and she tried to reach for me with her left hand, but I shoved her back.“What’s this? I remember this hand was in a cast not long ago. “Just a few days, and it’s healed? Or were you never really injured?”Ellis froze, then sulkily withdrew her hand, insisting earnestly that it wasn’t what I thought.“Can’t you trust me, Jon? Can we go back to Harborwyn?”Before I could respond, Margo, carrying a tray of desserts, called out anxiously, holding it in front of me with a hard expression.“Who are you? This is my husband. “If you dare bother him again, I’ll make sure you’ll regret it.”Ellis wiped her tears, instantly recognizing Margo. She cast her an impatient glance, then returned her gaze to me.“I know you’re still upset. I’ll handle Russell. Can w

Ellis nearly collapsed as she walked out of my home. My mom’s words echoed in her mind, and a sharp ache tightened her chest until she could barely breathe. When she saw her secretary wiping sweat from his brow, she knew immediately there had been no progress. She returned to Harborwyn in deep disappointment. The moment she switched on the lights in the villa, Russell pressed himself against her back, murmuring pitifully that he was scared.Ellis had no patience to comfort him. She shoved him aside and went straight to my room. The empty space struck her as wrong. After she called for the housekeeper, Ellis learned everything Russell had done. Rage surged through her, and she slapped him, her breathing growing more frantic.“Where are Jonathan’s things? I only agreed to let you try on that suit. Who told you to act on your own?”Her temper snapped. She grabbed Russell by the throat, and only Sandra’s intervention saved his life.“You can’t take everything out on Russ

Ellis stared at my smiling face on the screen, feeling a sharp sting in her chest. A cold shiver spread across her body. Her gaze fell on the wedding location displayed on the livestream. Ellis’s pupils constricted violently, and she smashed her phone to pieces. Then she spoke.“Book me a flight to Harborwyn right now.”As she prepared to leave, Russell carried a freshly made soup, dressed in the same suit and tie Ellis had once gifted to me.She had intended to use this to humiliate me, yet seeing Russell in the outfit now irritated her.She thought I was soft-hearted and didn’t even know how to plead for her. She had only wanted to see me humbled, docile.Thinking of the livestream, Ellis’s anxiety surged. She pushed past Russell and strode out with long, determined steps. Two hours of flight passed, and Ellis did not close her eyes once. Her mind churned with countless possibilities. Why was I leaving her? I had always claimed to love her, disregarding the ten-

I let out a bitter laugh, mocking my own naivety. Even knowing Ellis’s revenge plan, I still foolishly worried for her safety. When I returned home, Russell was disinfecting Ellis’s wounds with alcohol. Two faint scrapes at the corners of her mouth looked far too deliberate—hardly the marks of a genuine kidnapping, more like a staged show for me.Seeing my bruised face, Ellis immediately instructed the help to tend to my injuries. I refused, so Ellis told her to prepare a stew.“Those kidnappers were too cunning. I didn’t expect them to use me to lure you…”Which was more cunning, the kidnappers or you, Ellis? Didn’t you understand that?I ignored Ellis’s theatrics and locked myself in my room, checking the flight schedule for the next morning. That afternoon, I went to the court and made a change in my permanent address. As I got into a taxi, my eyes fell on Ellis across the street, riding in a sports car.Russell sat in the passenger seat, cradling a huge bouquet of ro
