Jeffery’s POV

As Cassie's body squished into mine and shuddered against me, my heart was racing, and my blood was vibrating beneath my skin. Like some primitive, animal essence ignited in me by her rich heat, dangerously mingling with our situation. The vile voice of Detective Hayes blasted in my ear.

Edward had escaped custody.

My arms embraced Cassie's trembling body, feeling a need to shield her from pain—physical, emotional, anything. Edward had taken as much as he would. He wasn't going to take another.

She lifted her lovely face to me, her dark eyes wide with fear, full of unshed tears. Her curvy body nestled into me, warm and inviting yet exposed in my arms.

"Jeffery, he'll be back for us," she quivered, her voice not more than a whisper. "This won't end"

Her cheek rested in gentle hands, my gaze intensely focused on her, my hands tracing over her smooth features. "Cassie, we don't have to let him get between us. I would die before I would give him a chance."
