The following morning, shortly after six, the Castellan estate was still quiet when a hard knock shook the front door.

Eva woke to the sound, startled by its force. It came again, louder this time, followed by the unmistakable sound of someone stumbling against the other side of the door.

Before any of the staff could reach the door, a slurred voice shouted from the porch. “Open the damn door.”

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   Late Morning

The following morning, shortly after six, the Castellan estate was still quiet when a hard knock shook the front door.Eva woke to the sound, startled by its force. It came again, louder this time, followed by the unmistakable sound of someone stumbling against the other side of the door. Before any of the staff could reach the door, a slurred voice shouted from the porch. “Open the damn door.”Julian was already on his feet.He reached the entrance just as another knock landed against the wood. When the door finally opened, Lucien stood beneath the porch light with his jacket hanging loosely from one shoulder, his tie was nowhere to be seen, and his shirt was partly undone at the collar. The sharp smell of alcohol reached them before he stepped inside.Eva stared at him.Lucien rarely drank enough for anyone to notice, which made the sight of him this morning even more unsettling. He had clearly gone far beyond his usual limit.Julian's expression hardened into a mask of pure disappr

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   What Clara Was Hiding

Clara arrived at the small guest cottage on the far side of the estate just after dusk, long after most of the household had settled into the quieter part of the evening. She stepped through the door and closed it behind her before turning toward Beatrice."I need it by tomorrow."Beatrice remained seated at the small writing desk near the window, finishing a letter as though Clara had said nothing particularly urgent. She didn't look up."You said that last month.""I said I would handle it.""And yet you're here again."Clara swallowed and glanced toward the curtained windows. "You don't understand," she said. "This isn't like before. If I don't have it by tomorrow, they'll—"You know what happens if Adrian finds out," Beatrice said, cutting her off.Clara went completely still. The threat hung in the air between them.Beatrice placed her pen beside the letter and finally looked up to face her properly. "I kept your secret when you couldn't keep yourself away from it," Beatrice sai

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   The Woman Behind The Necklace

By the time Leo arrived at Julian office on Monday morning, Julian had already made up his mind about what came next. The photograph of the veiled woman lay on the desk beside his untouched coffee, he had looked at it several times since Leo had given him the name, but the name itself had told him very little.Christabel could have been anyone. The woman in the photograph had deliberately made herself difficult to recognize.Leo closed the heavy study door behind him, stepping quietly into the room. "You asked for me, sir?"Julian looked up from the photograph, his eyes dark and entirely focused. "We're seeing her on Friday."Leo's expression changed slightly, a hint of surprise breaking through his usual professional mask. "You want to approach her yourself?""I do," Julian said, leaning forward."That gives us four days," Leo noted, pulling out his ledger."Then I expect you to use them," Julian replied, pushing the photograph across the desk. "I want her current address, find out w

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   The Things She Almost Said

Saturday arrived without the urgency that had become familiar to Eva since returning to Castellan Group. There was no alarm waiting to pull her out of bed, no schedule demanding her attention and no folder of financial reports sitting on the desk beside her. She spent the first part of the morning in her room, dressed comfortably, reading beside the window while sunlight moved slowly across the carpet. She had almost reached the point where she could forget about everything waiting for her beyond the estate when someone knocked lightly on the open door. She looked up.Clara stood there, dressed for the morning with her hair loosely tied behind her."You've been hiding in here all morning."Eva smiled. "I'm reading."Clara glanced at the book in her hands."You're on the same page you were on twenty minutes ago."She looked down and laughed when she realized Clara was right."I suppose that proves your point.""It proves you need to leave this room."Clara walked farther inside and dro

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   The Morning After The Kiss

The morning after the kiss, Eva discovered that breakfast was considerably more difficult than she had expected. It was not because Julian was behaving differently. In fact, that was precisely the problem. He sat at the head of the table with the same composed manner he brought to every morning, his attention divided between his coffee and the documents he had brought with him. If anything, he seemed almost too calm.Eva, on the other hand, had spent the first five minutes trying very hard not to look at his mouth. She eventually gave up pretending she was succeeding.Julian lowered the document in his hand and met her eyes across the table."You've been staring at me."Eva immediately reached for her coffee. "I was thinking.""About?""Nothing important.""You were thinking very intensely for someone who claims it was nothing important."She tried to suppress a smile. "Perhaps I was wondering whether you always look this pleased with yourself in the morning."He watched her a moment

  • Forced to Wear My Sister's Wedding Dress   The Line They Finally Crossed

By Thursday afternoon, Eva had stopped checking the clock. The investment floor had become familiar enough that she no longer felt the need to remind herself where everything was. More importantly, she had stopped feeling like Julian Castellan's wife who had been given a desk there. She was beginning to feel like an analyst. She stood beside the conference table, explaining the revisions she had made to the acquisition projections while Henderson studied the figures in front of him. She had just reached the section concerning the adjusted growth assumption when the conference-room door opened behind her.She did not turn immediately. She felt Julian before she saw him."Mrs. Castellan."The deliberately formal address made something tighten beneath her ribs. She turned to find him standing in the doorway, immaculate in a dark suit, his expression composed enough to belong to the chairman rather than the man who had nearly kissed her two nights ago."Henderson said you had revised the
