Chapter 4

Author: Hoho Tiger
"No, I'm not wronged at all. I'm begging you, please. Let's just finish the wedding first, okay?" Nancy said, her voice pitiful and strained.

Erick refused. He turned to me.

"If you still want to marry into the Jones family, then apologize to my mom and return the 130,000 dollars!"

The Jones family relatives immediately gave him an approving thumbs-up.

"That's right! You only have one mother. If a wife doesn't behave, you can always replace her."

"I seriously don't know what's so special about this Jessica. What makes her think she can demand 130,000 dollars for the wedding?"

"Don't let an outsider break your mother's heart."

The more Erick listened, the more convinced he became.

"Jessica, hurry up and apologize and return the money for the wedding!

"Otherwise, this wedding is off!"

Nancy tried to say something, but her relatives pulled her back. All she could do was look at me with pleading eyes.

I almost laughed. If she dared to do that, why be afraid of getting exposed?

Still, I figured she had learned her lesson.

Erick and I had once shared real love. Even though I had no intention of going through with that wedding anymore, I was willing to leave his family a shred of dignity.

So I said to Erick, "Arguing about this in front of so many people is embarrassing for everyone.

"Let's have the guests leave first. Then, we can sit down and talk it out in private."

However, Erick suddenly raised his hand again, about to slap me.

"Don't even think about it! I've spoiled you too much. That's why you think you can bully my mom like this!

"Today, you will apologize, and you will return the money! Otherwise, I won't let this go!"

Nancy had no choice. She broke free from her relatives and rushed forward, grabbing Erick's arm just in time to stop his hand from hitting my face.

"How about this, Jessica? Just return the card that holds the money for the wedding."

As she spoke, she shot me a meaningful look.

My eyes flickered, but I agreed.

The moment I took out the card and handed it over, Erick snatched it first.

He knew Nancy's ID information and her usual password, so he quickly checked the balance on the app.

Then, he turned the screen toward everyone and let out an icy laugh.

"Jessica, you really have no shame. Out of 130,000 dollars, you're only planning to return 1,300?

"Let me tell you, you will return every single dollar of that 130,000. Otherwise, I'm calling the police!"

At that point, there was no going back. Nancy gave up pretending and said, "Jessica, how could you do this? Just return the full amount. If this ends up at the police station, you'll be the one embarrassed."

I had already given them a chance. They were the ones who refused it. If that was the case, they could not blame me for being ruthless.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the police.

"Fine. Let's call them. Let the police confirm whether I've even spent a single cent from that card!

"Spreading lies and making false accusations can land you in jail, too!"

Nancy let out a sharp scream, rushed forward, grabbed my phone, and smashed it to pieces on the ground.

I almost laughed from anger.

"So, you don't want me calling the police? Fine. We can check the bank records. That will prove I'm innocent just the same," I said.

Nancy's eyes darted around, and she suddenly started acting hysterically.

"I'm just a country woman. How would I know anything about bank records? Who knows if you tampered with them in advance?

"I see it clearly now. You just don't like me. Fine, I'll just go and die, okay?"

With that, she ran toward a pillar and slammed her head forward, though she was clever enough to sneak glances at everyone's reactions.

That day, Erick was feeding his mother.Since she had trouble swallowing, the food spilled all over his clothes. He finally snapped. He slammed the plate down and shouted, "If you hadn't been so obsessed with lying and bragging, would things have gotten this bad? Would I have lost my job and been laughed at everywhere I go?"And now look at you. Lying there doing nothing while I have to take care of you. This is all your fault!"His mother lay in bed, trembling with anger as she listened to his accusations. She made muffled sounds, trying to defend herself."N…no… I…did it for you…""For me?"Erick kicked the side of the bed."You did it for your pride! And now look at what's happened. My whole life is ruined. Are you satisfied now?"His mother stared at him, her eyes full of despair and hurt. Tears slid down from the corners of her eyes. She wanted to argue back, but with her speech impaired, she could not form a complete sentence. All she could do was lie there and watch a

"What do I want?" I let out an icy laugh. "I want you to get out. Right now. Immediately. Get out of my hospital room."Just then, the door slammed open, and Yara Chapman stormed in like a gust of wind. The moment she saw Erick, her eyes turned sharp and furious."Erick? You've got some nerve showing up here."Yara was my best friend. She knew everything that had happened at the wedding. She had been by my side those past few days, holding back her anger the whole time. Before Erick could even react, Yara rushed up to him and slapped him hard across the face. The sharp crack echoed through the room. Erick's head snapped to the side, and a clear handprint appeared on his cheek."You piece of trash! Jessica is such a good person, and you and your mom ruined her life like this, and you still have the guts to come here and play the victim?"I'm telling you, Erick, Jessica must have been blind to ever fall for you. Get out of here. Don't dirty our eyes."Erick held his cheek, shock

Erick's company was a large one, and its management cared deeply about its reputation. At first, they tried to persuade him to resign. Erick refused and wanted to drag things out. He figured that if the company fired him, they would have to pay compensation. What he did not expect was that the company turned around and sued him instead, claiming he had damaged their reputation.Maybe that reason was not entirely solid, but the company had a whole legal team to wear him down.In the end, the one who could not hold out was Erick. He had no choice but to agree to resign.Even his relatives began distancing themselves. Those close to Nancy stopped visiting altogether, including the friends who used to spend time with her almost every day. When Erick came to the hospital, he looked completely worn out.He brought a basket of fruit, his face full of forced smiles and careful politeness."Jessica, I was wrong. I know now I'm in the wrong. Can you forgive me just this once?"My mom is

This time, none of the guests spoke up for Nancy anymore.I called the hotel security.Nancy still tried to struggle and throw another tantrum, but the guards pinned her down firmly. She thrashed and screamed, "Let me go! This is all her fault! She's trying to scam our family's money and deliberately caused trouble at the wedding!""Who's scamming whom? Everyone here saw exactly what happened."I grabbed my phone. The screen was cracked, but it still worked. Right in front of everyone, I dialed 911 without hesitation."911, what's your emergency?""I need the police. Someone assaulted a pregnant woman and caused a miscarriage. And they've been spreading lies about me for months."The moment Erick realized I had called 911, he panicked. He shot to his feet and pointed at me."Jessica, don't do this! My mom made a mistake, okay? However, this is about our family. You don't call the police over this. Hang up!""Family matters shouldn't be made public?"I let out an icy laugh. "

Everyone crowded closer, unable to hold back their curiosity. On the bank statement, there was only a single deposit of 1,300 dollars. That lone transaction sat there like a blade, slicing straight through the carefully woven lies of Nancy and her son.The entire room fell into silence. The guests' expressions shifted from scorn toward me to shock and doubt directed at the Jones family. Then, the whispers started again, swelling like a rising tide."Oh, my God! It really is only 1,300. Not 130,000? Nancy, why would you tell such a lie?""We trusted you so much. I can't believe you played all of us like this.""If Jessica hadn't stood her ground, she would've taken a huge loss."The blood beneath me kept spreading. The sharp pain in my abdomen made my whole body tremble, and I could barely stay upright. However, I clenched my teeth, braced myself against the edge of a table, and forced myself to stand. My eyes turned icy as I looked at Nancy and Erick.Erick stared at the scre

So, of course, she was stopped before she could actually hit the pillar. The way Erick looked at me, it felt like he wanted to devour me alive. Some of the relatives could not help frowning."Bank records aren't something an ordinary person can tamper with. Nancy, you're overthinking this."Nancy struggled free and rushed toward me. She grabbed my arm tightly, her fingers digging in, and lowered her voice as she begged."Jessica, I was wrong. This makes me look really bad."I swear I'll never lie again. Just help me with this once. Transfer the 130,000 dollars, okay?"Once this is over, I'll pay you back!"I shook her off and stepped back.I was not stupid. That was 130,000 dollars.Leaving aside whether she would ever pay it back, the moment I transferred the money, it would be like admitting I had taken an outrageous amount of wedding money and deliberately targeted Nancy.I would be stained for life, with no way to clear my name.So I said calmly, "I won't transfer a sin
