Chapter 2

Author: Shirley
Alessandro didn't come back that night.

Chloe's social media, however, was a constant stream of updates, giving me a clear view of their night.

She had secured the East River pier for the family. To celebrate, Alessandro took her to an underground casino, then booked a table at a private club in Manhattan.

The love he had for her, and the love he lacked for me, had never been clearer.

It would be a lie to say my heart didn't ache. But I would never again storm into his territory and cause a scene like I used to.

I was too tired. This relationship had left me utterly exhausted.

I walked into the bedroom and started to pack my art supplies and luggage.

This was supposed to be our room, but since we moved in, he was rarely home more than a few nights a month.

He always used the excuse of handling family business, but I knew that so-called family business was, more often than not, Chloe.

I wasn't an idiot. I had noticed his attention shifting for a long time.

So once, I brought him dinner at the casino, wanting to see for myself what kept him so busy.

I pushed open his office door and saw him and Chloe sitting behind the desk, watching an old movie, their shoulders touching.

In the middle of it, Chloe boldly kissed his neck. For a moment, his tone was stern. "Don't. I have a wife."

But a dark flush crept up his neck.

But when Chloe pressed close and murmured in his ear, "Capo, what's there to be afraid of? A little action on the side keeps things exciting. You know that better than anyone, don't you?"

Alessandro didn't hold back. The next second, he had her pressed against the desk, kissing her.

To this day, I still remember the framed photo of us sitting on the other side of that desk.

From that night on, he sank deeper and deeper into that thrill, each time more blatant than the last.

By the time I had packed everything into my suitcases, it was the middle of the night.

Alessandro still hadn't come home. I sighed, slipped the plain silver ring from my finger, and placed it on the vanity.

Alessandro and I had known and loved each other for seven whole years.

When he was at his lowest, his parents were taken out by a rival family, leaving him with a mountain of debt and enemies hunting him across the city.

I hid him in a leaky basement in the slums, dug a bullet out of his shoulder, cleaned and bandaged his wounds, and stayed with him through his darkest days.

He lay on an old mattress, burning with fever, clutching my hand and refusing to let go.

Back then, I painted portraits for a few dozen dollars a piece. I saved every dollar to pay off his debts and buy him guns and bandages.

All the while, I was sketching on the street in the heavy snow, not even allowing myself the luxury of a cheap cup of hot coffee.

In that old rental, he swore he would spend his entire life loving me.

I practically gave him my entire life. And when he clawed his way to the top with his own ruthlessness, becoming the Capo of his district, in charge of the family's casinos and money laundering operations.

Tens of millions of dollars passed through his hands each year.

Just when I thought I would soon be walking down the aisle, the first thing he did was betray me.

The next morning, Alessandro posted a photo of a sunrise over the sea on Instagram. The caption: [A beautiful sunrise today.]

Scrolling down, I saw Chloe's post.

The same sea, the same sunrise from a yacht, only her shot included Alessandro's back.

[No sunrise could ever be as beautiful as you.]

I let out a cold laugh. How sweet.

I dragged my suitcase to the entryway, my hand already on the doorknob, but I paused.

After a moment's thought, I turned around and headed toward the casino.

Before I left, I wanted one last look at the boy he once was. A final goodbye for my seven years of devotion.

In the days that followed, Alessandro didn't leave. He didn't go back to New York.In the morning, someone would deliver my favorite breakfast, with a card in his handwriting. At noon, a wall of white roses would be delivered to my Notting Hill apartment, the same kind he held in his hands when I first saw him behind that little tavern in the Bronx seven years ago.At night, I'd open Instagram to find various new accounts showering my posts with gifts.I blocked every IP and account, but for each one I blocked, a new one would appear. I'd block five, and he'd create a sixth. On top of that, I noticed that whenever I went out, a man in a trench coat would follow me from a distance.Once, in an unfamiliar city, someone had tried to snatch my purse while I was out buying coffee. He had promised me then that whenever I left his territory, he would have someone protect me.This had to stop.I needed a quiet space to create, I had an exhibition to prepare for. The color drained from Alessandro's face.Mia had called me the night before. She said Chloe had been in his ear for days, whispering that I'd only stormed out because I was holding out for more money. That's why he made that call, trying to buy me back.He never imagined I already knew everything.I took out my phone, pulled up the Instagram story, and turned the screen toward him.[My Capo said, to love me is to give me a devotion that never wilts.]His eyes were glued to the screen for a few seconds. "I—""If I told you it was just an act, part of playing the game, would you believe me?""She was a useful pawn. I never cared about her..."I laughed out loud."Look at you. The great Capo of the East Side, reduced to this.""Do you even believe the words coming out of your own mouth?""Alessandro, cheating is cheating. Own it.""I can give you and Chloe my blessing.""Sienna, I'm begging you, don't say that."This time, tears streamed down his face. A man who could order the execution

My finger was on the hang-up button, about to press it, when he suddenly spoke again."You knew," Alessandro's voice was hoarse."Sienna, I'm sorry. I can explain...""The thing with Chloe... it was an act. All of it. Just Family business they pushed on me.""I was drunk, looking for a thrill...""Stop," I cut him off. "You don't have to explain yourself to me.""I'm never coming back. I don't believe a single word you say anymore. I only believe what I've seen with my own eyes.""Don't be like this, just let me finish..."There was something in his voice I had never heard before, something close to a plea."I'll wire half a million dollars to your account today. I'll buy you a mansion, I'll..."I laughed. I couldn't help it. Even now, he thought this was a negotiation. It reminded me of the old saying: there are none so blind as those who will not see.I didn't say anything else. I just ended the call. The next day, Marcus arranged for me to visit a private gallery. The owner wanted t

After settling in London, Marcus found me a studio in Chelsea. It was south-facing, with great light. He told me not to rush an exhibition, to focus instead on creating a new body of work.So every day, I opened the door to white walls, the smell of turpentine, and a BBC station playing cello music at a low volume.I started painting London. The rainy-day market on Portobello Road, an old man eating a sandwich on a bench in Hyde Park, and a red-haired girl holding a cat on her balcony in Notting Hill. After a month, I scanned the works into my computer and casually posted a few on Instagram.I never expected them to go viral. The first painting was of the Camden Canal at dawn. An art blogger reposted it with the caption:[This artist's paintings tell a story. You can feel the loss in the way she paints the light.]Thousands of comments poured in. By that evening, my follower count was soaring. That night, I was scrolling through the people who had liked the post. When I got to the very

Falling for a mobster is quick. It can happen in the second he shields you from a bullet. But it can take a lifetime to forget him.I should know. And I'm just grateful I finally made a clean break. At JFK's international terminal, Mia was waiting for me by the departures curb. She was my only friend in this city, and the only person who knew everything about me and Alessandro.Seeing my pale face, she pulled me into a tight, pained hug. "Get to Europe and start over. You've earned your freedom.""Call me if you get into any trouble, and I'll keep an eye on things with the Family for you."I remember her warning me years ago: he goes through women faster than he goes through guns. Don't fall for him.I didn't believe her back then, too lost in love to listen.I hugged her back fiercely. "Thank you, Mia."Settling into my first-class seat on the flight to London, I leaned against the window and watched the runway recede.A rainy night from seven years ago flashed in my mind.Alessandro

"That's right. I'm breaking up with you."I looked up at him, saying each word with deliberate clarity."Sienna," he said through clenched teeth, his voice a low growl. "I'm giving you one chance. Take it back. I'll pretend this never happened.""As far as the Don and the whole Family are concerned, we're the perfect couple."I repeated, "I'm breaking up with you."A sharp crack echoed in the room. His control snapped. The force of his slap sent my head whipping to the side.My cheek burned instantly, and I tasted the metallic tang of blood in my mouth.I was stunned. In all our years together, he'd never drawn blood. He'd never so much as raised a hand to me.Even when he had nothing, when rivals were chasing him all over the city, he never laid a finger on me.Now he was a Capo, and I was the first person he hit."Sienna, what the fuck is wrong with you?"His chest heaved, his eyes bloodshot.
