Chapter 4

Author: Shirley
"Sienna, listen to me."

Alessandro practically flew out of the room, grabbing my wrist and pulling me into his office.

I could smell the cloying mix of cigar smoke and perfume in the air. My eyes scanned the room: an open bottle of Barolo on the desk, two crystal glasses still stained with wine.

How sophisticated. What a carefree life.

Early in the morning, in his top-floor casino office, drinking thousand-dollar wine and flirting with his assistant.

"It's not what you think," he said, stepping in front of me to block my view. "The deal at the docks was rough. Chloe and I were on edge all night. We came back, had a couple of drinks to unwind, and were just blowing off steam."

"You know how it is in our world. She's young and ambitious. She gets carried away."

A ruthless district Capo, now uncharacteristically scrambling to make excuses to me.

Chloe stood up from the sofa, adjusting her collar, her face a mask of perfect apology.

"Sienna, please don't get the wrong idea. There's nothing going on between the boss and me."

"This is just how we are with each other. We're used to it. You don't come to the casino often, so you probably don't understand our way of doing things."

I looked at her. Everything she said was meant to tell me that this kind of intimacy between them was normal.

She wanted to see me break, but she had chosen the wrong moment.

I had already decided to leave. Nothing involving Alessandro could hurt me anymore.

"I know," I nodded, my voice soft.

"I wasn't planning on blaming you," I said, meeting Alessandro's gaze, my tone calmer than it had ever been.

Alessandro froze. Even Chloe, who had been ready for a show, was stunned into silence.

"You're... not angry?" Alessandro stared at me, his brow furrowed, as if trying to identify something unfamiliar.

"Why would I be angry?" I placed the container of pancakes on his desk. "You've explained everything, haven't you?"

He visibly relaxed, his tense body slackening. "I knew you were the most understanding."

He reached out to touch my face, but I turned my head just enough for his hand to meet empty air. He awkwardly retracted it.

"I'll be home for dinner tonight," he said. "Make sure to prepare that veal I like."

Every time he did something to feel guilty about, he would come home for a meal.

As if a bowl of hot soup from me could smooth over his guilt, could wash away the filth he'd picked up outside.

My eyes drifted to Chloe. She didn't bother to hide the anger in her eyes, furious that he was going home to be with me tonight.

As expected, the next second she interjected, her voice feigning thoughtfulness.

"Sienna, I heard yesterday was your birthday. You must have been lonely all by yourself. Why don't you come over to my place for dinner tonight? I've got a gift to make it up to you."

As she spoke, she snuck a glance at Alessandro, gauging his reaction.

Predictably, Alessandro took the bait.

"Chloe, that's very thoughtful of you, to even think of getting a gift."

"Well then, Sienna, let's just go to her place tonight. She just hired a private chef, flew him in from Southern Italy at great expense."

Realizing his slip, he quickly added, "I meant the family has been using a new private chef for some events. The food's pretty good."

Alessandro didn't need to draw such a clear line between his professional and private life. Besides, I wasn't interested in whether he had eaten that chef's food before.

"Yes, yes, Sienna, you absolutely must come! I'll have the private chef prepare extra white truffles tonight. I guarantee even a refined artist like you will be satisfied!"

Her eyes were bright, like a spectator waiting for a good show.

I knew exactly what game she was playing. She wanted to humiliate me on her own turf, in front of Alessandro.

She had invited me a few times before, and I had always refused. I felt that going to a place like that was just asking for humiliation.

But today was different. Tomorrow morning, I would be on a flight to Europe.

Before I left, I didn't want to have a falling out with Alessandro. If he got suspicious, with his resources, I might not be able to get away.

I looked up at Chloe, a faint smile playing on my lips.

"Alright, I'll go."

Chloe was blindsided for a second. Then, an undisguised look of triumph spread across her face.

In the days that followed, Alessandro didn't leave. He didn't go back to New York.In the morning, someone would deliver my favorite breakfast, with a card in his handwriting. At noon, a wall of white roses would be delivered to my Notting Hill apartment, the same kind he held in his hands when I first saw him behind that little tavern in the Bronx seven years ago.At night, I'd open Instagram to find various new accounts showering my posts with gifts.I blocked every IP and account, but for each one I blocked, a new one would appear. I'd block five, and he'd create a sixth. On top of that, I noticed that whenever I went out, a man in a trench coat would follow me from a distance.Once, in an unfamiliar city, someone had tried to snatch my purse while I was out buying coffee. He had promised me then that whenever I left his territory, he would have someone protect me.This had to stop.I needed a quiet space to create, I had an exhibition to prepare for. The color drained from Alessandro's face.Mia had called me the night before. She said Chloe had been in his ear for days, whispering that I'd only stormed out because I was holding out for more money. That's why he made that call, trying to buy me back.He never imagined I already knew everything.I took out my phone, pulled up the Instagram story, and turned the screen toward him.[My Capo said, to love me is to give me a devotion that never wilts.]His eyes were glued to the screen for a few seconds. "I—""If I told you it was just an act, part of playing the game, would you believe me?""She was a useful pawn. I never cared about her..."I laughed out loud."Look at you. The great Capo of the East Side, reduced to this.""Do you even believe the words coming out of your own mouth?""Alessandro, cheating is cheating. Own it.""I can give you and Chloe my blessing.""Sienna, I'm begging you, don't say that."This time, tears streamed down his face. A man who could order the execution

My finger was on the hang-up button, about to press it, when he suddenly spoke again."You knew," Alessandro's voice was hoarse."Sienna, I'm sorry. I can explain...""The thing with Chloe... it was an act. All of it. Just Family business they pushed on me.""I was drunk, looking for a thrill...""Stop," I cut him off. "You don't have to explain yourself to me.""I'm never coming back. I don't believe a single word you say anymore. I only believe what I've seen with my own eyes.""Don't be like this, just let me finish..."There was something in his voice I had never heard before, something close to a plea."I'll wire half a million dollars to your account today. I'll buy you a mansion, I'll..."I laughed. I couldn't help it. Even now, he thought this was a negotiation. It reminded me of the old saying: there are none so blind as those who will not see.I didn't say anything else. I just ended the call. The next day, Marcus arranged for me to visit a private gallery. The owner wanted t

After settling in London, Marcus found me a studio in Chelsea. It was south-facing, with great light. He told me not to rush an exhibition, to focus instead on creating a new body of work.So every day, I opened the door to white walls, the smell of turpentine, and a BBC station playing cello music at a low volume.I started painting London. The rainy-day market on Portobello Road, an old man eating a sandwich on a bench in Hyde Park, and a red-haired girl holding a cat on her balcony in Notting Hill. After a month, I scanned the works into my computer and casually posted a few on Instagram.I never expected them to go viral. The first painting was of the Camden Canal at dawn. An art blogger reposted it with the caption:[This artist's paintings tell a story. You can feel the loss in the way she paints the light.]Thousands of comments poured in. Falling for a mobster is quick. It can happen in the second he shields you from a bullet. But it can take a lifetime to forget him.I should know. And I'm just grateful I finally made a clean break. At JFK's international terminal, Mia was waiting for me by the departures curb. She was my only friend in this city, and the only person who knew everything about me and Alessandro.Seeing my pale face, she pulled me into a tight, pained hug. "That's right. I'm breaking up with you."I looked up at him, saying each word with deliberate clarity."Sienna," he said through clenched teeth, his voice a low growl. "I'm giving you one chance. Take it back. I'll pretend this never happened.""As far as the Don and the whole Family are concerned, we're the perfect couple."I repeated, "I'm breaking up with you."A sharp crack echoed in the room. His control snapped. The force of his slap sent my head whipping to the side.My cheek burned instantly, and I tasted the metallic tang of blood in my mouth.I was stunned. In all our years together, he'd never drawn blood. He'd never so much as raised a hand to me.Even when he had nothing, when rivals were chasing him all over the city, he never laid a finger on me.Now he was a Capo, and I was the first person he hit."Sienna, what the fuck is wrong with you?"His chest heaved, his eyes bloodshot.
