Chapter 4 The Child Who Was Still Alive

ผู้เขียน: Simon Vale
I left the anatomy lab and rushed to the nearest restroom, retching into the sink until there was nothing left.

Only after I finally calmed down did I replay the conversation I had overheard. At last, I knew who the child was.

I returned to my son's hospital room and grabbed a few things before hurrying to the pediatric ward.

The moment I arrived, I saw a crowd of parents gathered around the nurses' station.

At the center stood my wife and the hospital director.

"Dr. Harper, thank you so much. We've waited so long for a chance like this."

"Exactly. Who would've thought that after losing her own child, she'd still be willing to do something so selfless? She's practically a saint."

Grace accepted their gratitude with a modest expression, while the director beamed with pride and loudly praised the hospital's compassion and dedication to saving lives.

The instant Grace saw me, her expression changed. "What are you doing here? Are you still trying to stop me?"

She gestured toward the parents around her. "Look at them. You're a parent too. Don't you feel anything for what they're going through?"

A thin woman overheard that I was against the procedure and immediately rushed over, grabbing my hands.

"Please, have mercy. My son is only ten years old. He's been waiting for a kidney transplant for two years. This donor is his only chance to survive."

The other parents quickly surrounded me as well. Each told the story of their child's illness.

Kidneys. A heart. Corneas. They intended to harvest everything. To strip one child down to nothing.

I looked at Grace again. "Are you sure you want to do this?"

My voice was cold. "If you wait any longer, it'll be too late."

A tall father suddenly grabbed my collar and yanked me forward. His eyes were bloodshot with desperation.

"Listen to me. Anybody who stands between my son and his chance to live is my enemy. Dr. Harper already agreed to this. Who are you to interfere? Do you have any compassion at all?"

The others joined in immediately.

"That's right. The child is already gone. Let his organs save other children. That's a good deed."

"If these kids die because of you, how are you going to sleep at night?"

"How did a doctor as kind as Dr. Harper end up married to someone like you?"

The accusations grew louder and louder.

Soon, they were no longer just shouting. Some of them started shoving me, their panic and grief turning into anger.

The hospital director cleared his throat. "Honestly, why make this difficult? This is an incredible act of generosity. If I had a child capable of something this noble, I'd be proud."

"Did I ever say I disagreed?"

The noisy crowd fell silent instantly. Everyone froze. Even the father gripping my collar loosened his hold.

Grace's expression softened slightly. Then, she spoke in a tone that sounded almost charitable. "I'm glad you've come to your senses."

She smiled faintly. "Don't worry. When the families send their thank-you banners later, I'll make sure they embroider Leo's favorite flower on them. That way we'll always have something to remember him by."

Then, she paused. "By the way, what was Leo's favorite flower?"

I didn't answer. Instead, I took out my phone and called my mother.

"Evander, when are you getting here?" My mother's voice came through the speaker.

"Mom, Leo's awake, right? Ask him what his favorite flower is. Let him tell his mother himself."

There was a second of silence.

Then, my mother called out from the other end. "Leo, what's your favorite flower? Tell your mommy."

A moment later, a soft, childish voice rang through the phone's speaker. It echoed down the entire hallway. "I like sunflowers. Mommy bought me some last time."

The corridor froze. Every face turned pale.

The silence was absolute.

Grace stared at me as if she had just seen a ghost.

I didn't hesitate to act, even for a second. I raised my arm high and waved at the two men before pointing at Grace. The moment they spotted her, they rushed over and yanked her up roughly by the arms.As she was dragged away, she twisted around to look at me, her eyes blazing with hatred as she screamed, "You bastard! You'll die a horrible death! You're all the same!"My face stayed impassive as she was shoved into an unmarked van that sped away, vanishing before me just like that. Not long after, the news reported that Grace had died in the psychiatric institution due to illness. After her death, Kyle inherited part of her estate and her shares in the hospital. Then, he did something no one expected.Apparently, he had been secretly gathering extensive evidence of the hospital's misconduct over the years. The dirt he had on the hospital included falsified clinical drug trials, questionable organ procurement channels, cover-ups of major medical incidents, financial irregularit

The next day, Grace looked noticeably relieved the second our divorce certificates were in our hands. The tension that had weighed on her for months seemed to disappear. Alas, that condescending aura of superiority she had when she talked to me returned full force. She casually brushed her hair back and gave me a mocking smile. "From now on, Kyle will be running the hospital, and I'll be moving up too."Her gaze swept over me from head to toe, full of disdain."As for you… You should lower your standards when you're looking for your next woman. Stop dreaming about marrying up. You're not young anymore. How many rich women would even want you? Besides, can you still perform in bed?"Then, she sauntered away triumphantly in her brand-new sedan, her high heels clicking against the pavement.I didn't argue, nor did I get angry.I simply watched her leave with cold eyes. 'Grace, you still don't understand men.'…Not long afterward, news of her marriage to Kyle spread like wildfire

  • He Died On Her Table   Chapter 8 The Truth Changes Nothing

By the time I arrived at the hospital where my son was staying, he was already asleep.I gently placed his favorite stuffed toy on the nightstand beside his bed. Then, I told my parents everything that had happened at the hospital. When they heard the whole story, they were shaken to their very core.My father slammed his fist against the wall. "Monsters! They're nothing but monsters."My mother's eyes filled with tears. "Thank goodness we listened to you and transferred Leo. Otherwise, my poor grandson…"Later, they asked what I planned to do next. I told them I was getting a divorce. They immediately supported my decision, but concern soon appeared on their faces."We completely support your decision," my father said. "But what about Leo? How are you going to explain it to him?"I was still trying to think of the gentlest way to tell him when a small voice came from the hospital bed. "Daddy, you should get the divorce."I turned around in shock.Leo was wide awake. "Daddy,

When Marvin saw me looking at him, his face turned ghostly pale.He instinctively grabbed Grace's arm. "Dr. Harper, what… what does he mean by that? It was an accident! None of us wanted this to happen. Is Mr. Sterling biased against us or something?"The others quickly jumped in to defend themselves."It was an accident. Surgeries have always been risky. We did everything we could to save him.""Exactly. You weren't even in the operating room. Do you have any idea how hard we worked?"Grace's expression darkened. She stepped between the interns and me, her voice sharp and authoritative. "Are you done? This matter has nothing to do with you. The family involved has already accepted that this was an accident. Why are you still here, stirring things up?"I know you're angry, but don't take it out on innocent people. Marvin and the others are victims, too. Do you have any idea how much psychological pressure they're under right now?"I ignored Grace and fixed Marvin with a hard s

Grace suddenly grabbed me, her eyes red with rage. "You did this on purpose. You sent Xavier to that operating table, didn't you? You're a murderer!"I shook her off and sneered. "Grace, you really are good at framing people."So, I swiftly pulled out my phone and played another crucial video to everyone. The footage came from a portable camera set up by the family of the patient in the neighboring bed.The recording clearly showed Xavier walking past the room and noticing Leo's stuffed toy left on the bed. He had a curious glint in his eye, clearly interested in the toy. So, he picked it up and started playing with it.After a while, he started to flag. He hugged the stuffed toy, curled up on Leo's bed, and fell asleep.Shortly after, Marvin rushed in with the interns and quickly wheeled him away. When the video ended, silence fell over the crowd. It had all been a tragic mistake. One of the waiting parents could no longer stop themselves from adding in their two cents. "I don

Grace's lips trembled, but she still forced herself to speak. "What, you hired someone to scare me? He's already dead. Why would you use something like this to get back at me? Why won't you just let him rest in peace?"When she refused to believe me, I opened the video and showed it to everyone. The footage started playing, showing my son lying in a hospital bed. His face was pale and his breath weak, but he looked alert and in good spirits.Once they got a clear look at him, I turned the phone around and spoke softly. "Buddy, I'm almost done here. As soon as I finish taking care of a few things, I'll bring your favorite stuffed toy to you. Be a good boy and listen to Grandpa and Grandma, okay?"My son obediently nodded and agreed.I immediately ended the call. I didn't want him to hear any more of the filth around us.Grace stood frozen, her entire body shaking, her eyes vacant with shock. "This… This can't be right. What's going on?"She stumbled backward before suddenly snapp

The moment Marvin made the suggestion, the other interns' eyes lit up."That's right. Marvin's mistake happened because he wasn't familiar enough with a child's heart anatomy. If we study the case properly, he'll be much better prepared next time.""Mr. Sterling already signed the settlement agree

I wanted to step forward and get a better look at the child's face, but a hand suddenly shoved me hard to the ground."This is all your fault.
