Chapter 3

Autor: Ethereal
In my first life, I had devoted everything to Julian.

I found his doctors, paid for his treatment, and spent years protecting him from a world I believed he couldn't face alone.

I never paid attention to the Moretti family business.

Bianca and I had never been treated the same.

My father always claimed he loved us equally, yet the family trust held shares for Lorenzo and Bianca, not me. Bianca collected enough in annual dividends to live in luxury without working a day.

Meanwhile, I had needed my father's written approval every time I paid one of Julian's medical bills.

If I wanted a place in the Moretti family, I could no longer wait for someone to offer it to me.

I had to earn enough power that they couldn't ignore me.

Lorenzo didn't even meet with me when I first joined his division. He had his assistant give me a minor position and an office no one else wanted.

I didn't complain.

I studied the financial records, learned the port operations, and quietly handled every assignment they left on my desk.

In my first life, I had never discovered what I could do.

This time, even I was surprised by how naturally the work came to me.

Three months later, I convinced a notoriously difficult investor to finance a logistics project Lorenzo had been trying to save for nearly a year.

For the first time, my brother invited me into his office.

He gave me a welcome dinner three months late and transferred several struggling accounts into my hands.

Moretti Logistics had reached a bottleneck. Lorenzo needed someone who could produce results.

He might have preferred Bianca, but he could no longer afford to overlook me.

Gradually, people stopped referring to me as the scarred Moretti daughter.

My name began appearing in investment reports and board memos. At family events, businessmen who once stared at Bianca's face started asking for my opinion.

Bianca noticed.

When I returned to the estate one evening, she was waiting for me in the conservatory.

Gabriel and Julian stood behind her.

"Elena, don't you think you've been drawing too much attention lately?" she asked.

I frowned.

"You've been appearing at negotiations, dinners, and company events almost every week. I'm not trying to discourage you, but your recent success has more to do with luck than experience."

She gave me a concerned smile.

"If something goes wrong, it won't only embarrass you. It will damage the Moretti name."

I said nothing.

Bianca's gaze drifted toward the scar on my face.

"And you already attract the wrong kind of attention. If you keep acting so aggressively, men may find you difficult to approach."

She glanced meaningfully at Julian.

"I think you should stop bothering Lorenzo. If you want something to do, you can work with my foundation instead. I'll take care of you."

I looked directly at her.

"You're afraid I'm taking attention away from you."

Her smile disappeared.

"Elena, how could you think that?"

"What position are you giving me advice from?" I asked. "As Dad's favorite daughter? As a shareholder in the family trust that excluded me?"

Her face stiffened.

"You've benefited from this family your entire life. What gives you the right to stand above me and tell me not to fight for my own place?"

Her eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Elena—"

"And since you brought up my scar, perhaps we should finally discuss how I got it."

The conservatory went quiet.

"When we were ten, I stepped between you and a rival gunman. Then you shoved me into the shattered car window so you could get away."

Bianca's lips parted.

"The surgeons needed forty-seven stitches to close my face. You walked away without a scratch."

"It was an accident," she whispered.

"An accident ruined my face. It didn't stop you from accepting the trust shares and family position that should have been mine."

"How can you say that?" Her voice trembled. "Dad only gave them to me because you weren't interested."

"I wasn't interested then. That doesn't mean I surrendered them forever."

A tear slipped down her cheek.

I felt nothing.

"You don't need to cry. You aren't the person who was hurt. Go back to being the family's princess and leave me alone."

I turned to leave.

Bianca covered her mouth as a sob escaped.

"That isn't what happened. I was only worried about you. You're my sister. How could you believe I would ever deliberately hurt you?"

Her shoulders began to shake.

"That's enough."

Gabriel crossed the room and pulled her into his arms.

He glared at me over her head.

"You've gone too far."

Bianca caught his sleeve and shook her head, tears still falling.

"Don't. I'm fine. Elena is angry, that's all."

Julian had remained silent until then.

I saw the sympathy in his eyes as he looked at Bianca.

Then he turned to me.

"You were out of line," he said. "Apologize to her."

For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.

"You kept your voice from me for seven years, and now you're using it to order me to apologize to Bianca?"

His expression tightened.

"I don't want either of you hurting the other."

"No. You just don't want her to get hurt."

I stepped closer and made him look at me.

"You watched me die for her. You came back knowing exactly what your choice cost me, and you're still more concerned about her tears than the scar she left on my face."

Julian went pale.

Bianca hurried to defend him. "Elena, that isn't fair. He was only trying to—"

"I wasn't speaking to you."

I looked from Julian to Gabriel.

"Teach your guards to remember their position. Neither of them has the right to order me around."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

Julian said my name, but I had already turned away.

I walked out without giving any of them another chance to speak.

Dante missed the acquisition vote. The Russo family lost its chance to take Moretti Holdings at rock-bottom price, but it didn't lose the war.Desperate to save his own assets, Lorenzo handed several senior capos to federal prosecutors. Those men retaliated by delivering the port ledgers and records of bought votes to the FBI. My father tried to freeze the family trust and ignited a war among every remaining faction instead. The Moretti empire split open from within.Federal raids shut down two terminals before Vincent could move the cash. Men who had kissed his ring for twenty years began bargaining for immunity before breakfast. I didn't need to fire a shot or beg for my inheritance. I only had to put the truth in the right hands and let the empire reveal how rotten its foundations had always been.Bianca didn't escape either. The shell company that paid for the kidnapping had been registered by her foundation manager. Two kidnappers from the original crew testified under Russo prote

"Don't fight the straps. You'll tear your wrists."Julian sat beside the window. My platinum ring and a full glass of water rested on the table between us.The moment I saw him, anger burned through the drugged fog in my head. "Let me go.""Not yet.""You kidnapped a Don's fiancee.""I know." His unnatural calm made everything worse. "That's why I chose this island. It isn't Moretti territory, and it sits outside the Russo family's usual routes.""You think locking me up changes what happened in the warehouse?""No." Julian crossed to the bed. "But I can make sure no one trades you away again. No one will let you risk your life just to test whether they answer a phone call.""Including you?"His face went pale. "Especially me."We were on a small island in the Adriatic Sea. He had prepared the house, a doctor, supplies, and new identities. He was willing to leave New York forever and never see Bianca again if I stayed with him."You're not trying to make amends," I said. "You just can'

Dante and I didn't announce our engagement right away. The Russo family held its winter charity auction in Monte Carlo, and I made my first public appearance as his official partner.Doctors had softened the scar on my face but hadn't erased it. I no longer hid behind a veil, and I refused the heavy concealer the stylist offered.Dante didn't argue.Whenever someone stared, he simply remembered the name. After two glasses of champagne, I stepped onto a terrace for air. The door had barely closed behind me when a hand locked around my wrist.I pivoted into the man's chest and pressed the compact pistol from my clutch against his ribs."You're faster than you used to be."I knew those gray-blue eyes."Julian."His black tuxedo fit him perfectly. A pin from Bianca's foundation gleamed on his lapel. He was no longer the silent young guard I remembered."How did you find me?""Every time Moretti Holdings loses a company, a matching asset appears on Russo's acquisition list." His breathing t

The Morettis held a funeral for Elena without a body.Vincent kept the press outside in the name of security. Senior capos filled the first three pews of the church, but no one mentioned the six-to-one vote.Julian didn't attend. He locked himself in the security room and replayed every second of the footage from Bianca's rescue. When she came out of the cannery, her shoes were clean and the marks on her wrists were faint and loose. She had known the exchange site. More importantly, she had called to Julian by name when he was supposed to be hidden in the dark.Too many details didn't add up.That night, he found Bianca trimming white roses in the conservatory."Who were the kidnappers?"Her shears paused against a stem. "I've told the police everything I know.""Why did they take care of you but torture Elena?""Maybe Elena fought them.""How do you know she fought?"Bianca raised her head, tears already brightening her eyes. "Are you interrogating me?"Gabriel entered from the doorwa

Julian stood beside the dance floor without hearing a note the band played.Elena's phone call kept looping through his mind. The bolt cutters had been around her finger. She had asked why he wasn't coming, and the case holding six million dollars sat in an armored vehicle in the estate garage. All he had to do was leave the ballroom. He told himself the team needed another few minutes. He told himself Bianca had just survived a kidnapping and that abandoning her in front of two hundred guests would trigger panic. Those excuses sounded almost responsible inside his head. The truth was much uglier: Bianca was safe and asking for him, while Elena was far away and had always been the one expected to endure."Julian." Bianca approached in a champagne-gold gown and placed her hand in his. "The host has called us twice.""Elena might actually be in danger.""The men who held me gave me hot soup and clean clothes. They kept me in a windowless room for three days.By the third morning, there was almost no unbroken skin left across my back. The leader swept everything off the table."Aren't you Vincent Moretti's daughter? Why hasn't your family sent a single dollar? Are you even a real Moretti?"I tasted blood when I smiled."The Moretti family only has one real daughter."It just wasn't me.He grabbed a syringe and came toward me."This will make every nerve in your body hypersensitive. Call your family. If they send the money now, I'll let you go."He pressed the needle against my neck."If they refuse, I'll send them all ten of your fingers.""No—"The needle pierced my skin.Every wound across my body erupted at once. My back arched against the restraints, and a scream tore out of me."Call."He shoved a phone into my hand. For three days, the kidnappers had tried every member of my family. My father had hung up.Lorenzo had refused to pay.Bianca had never answered.Only Julian remained.I ca
