“His uncle?” Anna tapped her fingers lightly against the leather wrapped steering wheel.

“Yes. Lorenzo Caldwell is still unmarried. If you could marry him, you would have a real voice within the Caldwell family. Lucas is still young and has not taken control of the family yet. No one can say what the future holds.”

The butler left the meaning unspoken. If the one who eventually took charge of the Caldwell family turned out to be Lorenzo, then even if Lily married Lucas, the family would never truly belong to that couple.

If Lucas had not played his tricks, Anna would not have been this aggressive.

But now, the corner of her lips curved upward. Even if Lorenzo were a reckless playboy, she would push him to the top.

She had tried pursuing love. Since effort brought her nothing, she would grip power instead.

In this world, only money never betrayed you.

Only money and power earned respect.

Lucas was still planning to keep her in Miami. What would his expression be if he saw her become his aunt by marriage?

Was there anything more satisfying than that?

If she did not vent her anger properly, these three years would have been wasted.

“Send me the information on that Caldwell uncle as soon as possible.”

“Understood.”

The moment she hung up, a message from Lily popped up.

“Little slut: Anna, in three days I am meeting the young master of the Caldwell family. It was originally meant to be you, but I only had to say one thing and Father sent me instead. I stole your fiancé. You are not angry, are you?”

“Not at all. I hope you two are locked together forever, grow old together, and have children early.”

“Little slut: Since you are so generous, you will definitely come back then, right? I have seen Lucas photos. He is quite handsome. I just wonder about his character. Help me take a look for me.”

“Of course. I will be there on time.”

Anna sneered. A scumbag paired with a cheap woman. They were made for each other.

Since Lily loved taking everything from her, Anna wanted to see if she could actually handle what she stole this time.

She set the phone aside, finished the handover at the office, and by the time she left, night had already fallen.

She looked back at the office building. Hundreds of companies were housed inside.

Over three years, she had grown from a few small rooms to an entire floor. She had poured too much effort into this place.

Just like with Lucas. She had feelings. Even walking away hurt a little.

Her self control was strong. The withdrawal was nowhere near as severe as it would be for most women, but that did not mean she felt no pain.

She pushed the melancholy aside. It was just Lucas. Goodbye meant goodbye. The next one would be better.

Three legged toads were hard to find. Four legged men were everywhere.

Lucas had never been her only option.

Anna drove home. The moment she opened the door, she saw the lights were off. Rose petals covered the floor, leading along a candlelit path into the living room.

Lucas stood there in a suit, holding a bouquet of roses, kneeling on one knee.

“Anna, I am the man. If there is a proposal, it should be me.”

If she had not heard those words before, she might have felt a flicker of emotion.

Now, knowing his true face, she only found it ridiculous.

How many women had he played this scene for?

She suppressed the cold laughter in her heart. On her face, she had to cooperate. She could not pretend not to see it.

“What are you doing?”

Lucas eyes were gentle, his expression solemn.

“Will you marry me?”

Such a romantic scene, yet for some reason, images of him and Stell in bed suddenly flashed through her mind.

Anna showed a token of emotion.

“I will.”

Lucas slipped a five carat diamond ring from a top luxury brand onto her finger. It seemed he was ready to come clean.

He knew it. She looked cold, but she had already given him her heart.

As long as he gave her enough ceremony, what woman could resist?

Anna was the woman he truly liked. It was not entirely an act.

He had even thought that if her background matched his, he would marry her immediately.

“Anna…”

He leaned closer. Anna pushed him away and shifted her attention to the ring.

“Lucas, this ring must be expensive.”

Seeing that she noticed it, Lucas decided to reveal everything.

“I am sorry, Anna. I lied to you.”

He explained everything she already knew. Anna forced herself to look shocked.

“So you are the young master of the Caldwell family in New York. Will you take me back to the Caldwell family?”

“Anna, I love you. Of course I want to take you back. But I am still young. I need to focus on my career first. Give me a few years. Once I establish myself in the Caldwell family, I will marry you properly and with honor.”

Anna looked troubled.

“You will not lie to me, will you?”

“Could I lie to you for three years? Anna, you are the woman I wanted to marry the moment I first saw you.”

Sweet words came one after another. Then he took out a property deed he had prepared.

“You always wanted a home, right? I already bought this villa. I will transfer it to your name in a few days, alright?”

“No. It is too expensive. I cannot accept this.”

“What is mine is yours. And this card. A monthly limit of one million dollars.”

Lucas fingertips brushed her soft cheek.

“Anna, I told you I would take care of you. From now on, do not work so hard. I can give you connections and resources. You just need to be my good Mrs. Caldwell.”

What a beautiful dream.

He made keeping a woman like a caged bird sound so appealing.

If she had never seen the sun, she might have been blinded by this faint glow.

Anna cooperated, letting a tear of emotion fall.

“Lucas…”

His kiss was about to land.

If it were any other woman, faced with such a tender proposal and such temptation, who could stay clear headed?

Anna noticed the camera hidden inside the rose teddy bear across from them.

He planned to record proof to show his friends.

She shoved him away.

“Not today…”

A chill flashed through his eyes, though he forced his patience.

“Why?”

“I have been staying up late recently, and my diet has been irregular. My period came early.”

Anna looked at him pitifully.

“I am sorry. You do not mind, right?”

“Of course not. We have plenty of time ahead of us.” He smiled, barely holding it together.

Anna murmured softly.

“Plenty of time… but we have no future.”

“What did you say?”

She looked flustered.

“N nothing, I…”

At that moment, his phone rang.

Lucas eyes flickered as he walked a few steps away to answer.

After hanging up, he said he needed to go out.

Anna grabbed his hand.

“Can you stay with me tonight?”

Lucas patted her head.

“Curtis has been in a bad mood since his breakup. I will go check on him. Be good and wait for me at home.”

Anna knew exactly what it was. Stell was calling him again.

Since she was inconvenient, he naturally needed to find fun elsewhere.

She compromised.

“Alright. Come back early.”

“Mm.”

Lucas left in a hurry. When he turned back, he seemed to see Anna wiping her tears.

A woman as strong as her must have been moved by him.

He did not know that Anna was already laying the groundwork to leave.

She poured some fake blood onto a napkin and deliberately tossed it into the shared trash bin, covering it with paper, yet leaving a corner stained red in plain sight.

After that, she walked to the teddy bear with the camera, hugged the property deed, and let tears fall freely.

Her shoulders trembled as she acted with full emotion.

“Lucas, how I wish I could stay with you forever and truly give you a home…”
