The surveillance photos on Lydia’s desk were clear.

"The salon is called Ava’s Glam," Julian said over the line. His voice was completely steady. "She runs it with Tessa Clarke. The building belongs to a commercial group, but the apartment upstairs is leased under a different company name. That's where Noah's car sits."

Lydia didn't open the folder yet. "What about her family?"

"Marcus Hayes works the docks. The younger brother, Leo, is back home recovering after an attack," Julian said.

Marcus unlocked the door, and they walked straight into the thick smell of roasted chicken and garlic. “About time,” their mother called from the kitchen. “Maya, tell them to sit down before everything gets cold.” Maya was leaning against the hallway wall with a dish towel over her shoulder. She took one look at them and grinned. “They’re here, Ma. And Leo looks like he’s about to break.” “Marcus drives like an old lady,” Leo muttered, kicking his sneakers into the corner. “And Ava wouldn’t shut up the whole way home.” “Because you were acting weird,” Ava said, hanging up her jacket and giving the back of his neck a quick swat. “Your face was bright red.” “Marcus texted me,” Maya added, stepping aside so Marcus could get into the kitchen. “Said Leo wouldn’t leave the new girl alone at the desk.” “Marcus, you snake!” Leo snapped. Marcus didn’t turn around as he grabbed the plates. “I just said the shop was busy.” “Sure you did,” Maya laughed, shoving Leo’s shoulder when he trie

  • He Never Claimed Me   Chapter 40: Sweet Lilies

The late afternoon sun cut through the open doorway of the salon, casting long streaks of gold across the polished floor. The rush had slowed, leaving behind the quieter rhythm of dryers humming low and the occasional murmur of conversation. Chloe stood behind the counter, carefully counting out change for a client, her brows slightly furrowed in concentration. She double-checked the receipt before handing it over with a small, polite smile. “Thank you,” she said softly. The client nodded and stepped out, the bell above the door chiming as it shut. Chloe exhaled, her shoulders dropping slightly before she reached for a cloth and began wiping down the counter again, even though it was already clean. “You’re going to polish that counter into another dimension,” Tessa called from the back, not looking up from her client. Chloe laughed nervously. “Just trying to stay busy.” “You are busy,” Tessa replied. “Relax a little.” Ava glanced up from her station, watching the exchange

  • He Never Claimed Me   Chapter 39: The Way I Feel About Him

Ava’s POV I don’t remember the exact moment it started. That’s the strange part. People talk about love like it’s obvious, like it happens all at once, like there’s a moment you can point to and say that’s when everything changed. With him, it wasn’t like that. It was quieter. The first time I saw him, he didn’t belong there. I remember that clearly. He walked into the salon dripping rainwater onto my clean floors, dressed like he had somewhere much more important to be. Expensive suit. Expensive watch. The kind of man who expected people to move without asking. I wasn’t in the mood for that. “We’re fully booked,” I told him. “If you need somewhere to wait out the rain, there’s a café two doors down.” Most men would have left. He didn’t. He answered like he wasn’t used to being told no. Calm. Direct. It annoyed me. So I looked at him properly. Not because I was impressed. Because I needed to be. And something about the way he stood there—still, controlled, watching everythin

The morning light in the penthouse was a soft, pale gray. When Ava opened her eyes, Noah was already out of bed. Usually, this was the moment her chest would tighten, knowing he had already dressed in a suit and left for work without a word. She sat up, pulling the sheet around her, and walked out into the kitchen. Noah was standing by the counter. He wasn't dressed for meetings yet. He wore a simple dark sweater, his hair a little messy, holding a mug of coffee. When he heard her, he looked up. His eyes looked tired, but softer than usual. "You're awake," he said quietly. "Yeah," Ava replied, getting up. He didn't rush to touch her. Instead, he poured a second cup, fixing it exactly the way she liked it, and slid it across the marble toward her. "I don't have to leave for another hour," Noah said, watching her face. Ava looked at the steam rising from the mug. Her words from last night you shut me out when you want to were still in the air. But he wasn't running away

  • He Never Claimed Me   Chapter 37: Not All the Way

“This chapter contains mature themes.” The afternoon rush at the salon was in full swing. The air was thick with the scent of sprays, the steady hum of blow dryers, and the blur of client conversations. Ava focused entirely on her work, her hands moving with steady precision. On the counter behind her, her phone lit up. Noah. Ava glanced at the name. She didn't move. She kept her eyes on the mirror, pinning a stray lock of hair into place, and watched the screen flash until it finally went dark. She turned her attention back to the client in her chair, making sure the style was perfect. She handed over the mirror, waited for the nod of approval, and checked her out at the register. Only when the front door chimed shut did Ava walk over and pick up the phone. The screen was already lighting up again with the same name. She answered before the ringing could stop. "I'm at work," Ava said, her voice quiet. There was a distinct pause on the other end. The silence from his

  • He Never Claimed Me   Chapter 36: Something to Hold

Ava pushed open the glass door of the café, the soft chime above it ringing once before settling back into silence. The café was warm and already busy, the smell of coffee hanging in the air. Tessa was already at a table by the window, scrolling through her phone with one hand and stirring her drink with the other. “You’re late,” she said without looking up. “I’m not,” Ava replied, sliding into the seat across from her. Tessa glanced at the wall clock, then back at her. “You’re two minutes late.” Ava shrugged. “Traffic.” “Mm,” Tessa hummed, unconvinced but uninterested in arguing. “Go order. I already got mine.” Ava stood again, walking up to the counter. The line was short. She ordered without thinking same as always and stepped aside to wait. Her fingers brushed against her phone in her pocket. For a second, she almost took it out. Then she didn’t. “Order for Ava.” She stepped forward, took the cup, and turned. “Hi.” Ava paused, her eyes lifting. The girl from
