Chapter 3

Autor: Mellona
Before I left the pack, my father pressed a crest carved with a wolf's head into my hand.

It marked me as a member of the pack's inner circle. He told me to keep it on me for protection on the road.

When the carriage passed through a small border town, I asked the driver to stop at an apothecary. Inside, I traded the crest for a packet of grayish-white powder.

"Purified wolfsbane," the herbalist said with a grin that split his dry lips. "Just a pinch will stop a heart. Be careful not to touch it."

I tucked the packet carefully into my sleeve. My heart raced as fear and excitement surged through me.

My father had given me that crest to keep me safe on the road and to keep his own hands clean. Now it had bought exactly what I needed to escape.

I wondered if they'd be sad when they saw I was dead.

Probably not.

When I returned to the castle, my chambers were almost unrecognizable.

The nameplate was gone from my door. Someone had replaced my favorite linen tapestry with fussy velvet.

Maids were hauling my things out, one trunk after another.

Sera sat in a wicker chair with a stack of notes. She read them one by one, tossing each into the brazier.

They were the notes Kyle had left me over the past two years.

They said, "Take your medicine on time," "Wait for me," and "Don't be scared."

Firelight lit her delicate face as she gave a scornful smile. "His sweet talk never changes, does it?

"On those nights you were burning up with fever, did you really think Kyle stayed up because he couldn't bear to see you suffer?"

Her words stung.

I remembered those feverish nights, the hazy moments between dreams.

I could still feel him gently tucking the damp hair on my cheek behind my ear.

Was that fake too?

The notes crackled in the brazier. As the writing turned to ash, so did my last excuse for believing him.

"That night, the rogues were on the move. Kyle canceled every meeting on purpose and stayed by your bed so everyone would think he'd lost his mind over you."

Sera poked at the ashes. "Meanwhile, his best soldiers slipped into the enemy camp and found out where I was."

So that was it.

The one moment I'd believed was real had only been part of his plan to save the woman he truly loved.

Kyle came down the hallway. He saw the brazier and the notes and frowned, but he didn't stop Sera.

"You'll drink the potion tomorrow at noon." Kyle sounded as though he were giving a military order.

"Not noon." Sera cut in right away. "Tomorrow afternoon is my coronation. If her burial overlaps it, that's bad luck. Make it an hour earlier."

Kyle barely paused before waving a servant over. "Move it up an hour. See to it."

I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms. Even my death had to make way for her coronation.

I lowered my eyes and rubbed the paper packet of wolfsbane in my sleeve between my fingers.

Then I poured all the grayish-white powder into the bottle of dark blue sleeping potion.

They thought I was drinking a potion that would fake my death for three hours.

Only I knew it would free me from this wretched world for good.

Three days later. They didn't bury me in the royal cemetery in the capital or in my pack's ancestral graveyard. In the end, Kyle overruled everyone and buried me on Windsong Heights, where no faction or royal law held sway. The wind howled there year-round, and wild grass stretched as far as I could see.But I liked it. It was open. It was free.My headstone was a rough stone Kyle had smoothed himself. It bore no family name. No "mate." No "daughter of the pack." Not even the false name "Lila."It bore only my name, "Gwen."For the first time in more than 20 years, I belonged completely to myself. On the day of my burial, a freezing rain started to fall.I floated above the grave as the workers prepared to close the coffin.Suddenly, my mother let out a wail. She broke free of my father's grip and threw herself at the coffin. With a trembling hand, she tried to slip a glowing moonstone inside."Gwen's scared of the dark!"My mother sobbed, her tears mingling with the rain. "Let her tak

She bit her lip. In despair, she raised her hand and slowly took the silver leaf clip from her hair, the symbol of their fated bond.It was the keepsake Kyle had saved for her since he was a boy, the one she'd flaunted in front of me.Now she laid it beside my coffin, as if she were setting aside all her foolish pride. Then she turned away, devastated, climbed into her carriage, and left.I'd once envied her for having that special love and promise all to herself. Now the clip lay beside my coffin like a piece of unwanted trash.Kyle's love had come too late and was tearing him apart. Sera's pride had crumbled. In the face of death, it all seemed cheap and meaningless. After Sera left, the argument in the woods started again."She's a daughter of this pack. Even dead, she can be buried in the family plot as our daughter!" my father roared, his face red as he tried to salvage the family's pride."Bull! She's my mate. As her husband, I'll bury her in my own courtyard."Miles refused to b

Dawn broke, and the sky turned a pale gray. This long night was finally about to end.A light carriage stopped outside the woods, and Sera hurried over in a simple dress. She should have been wearing her crown and receiving the whole pack's homage. Instead, she'd come all this way to face a dead body."Kyle, you've been out here too long. The elders are waiting in the hall."Sera came up beside Kyle. Seeing him covered in mud and falling apart, she couldn't hide her irritation or her panic."She bought the wolfsbane herself. She drank the potion herself."She went too far. She wanted to get back at us. This has nothing to do with me, or with you."She didn't need to rush to clear her name. I didn't care about her at all.She was the leading lady in Kyle's life. I'd never wanted to take her place.I simply didn't want to play my part in their story anymore.Kyle raised his head slowly. His voice was low and hoarse with pain."No. It has nothing to do with you. I was wrong."At first, I

My father's knees buckled, and he collapsed into the mud.I looked at my father's terrified, aging face and felt nothing at all. They loved me, but they loved the pack's honor and their own status more.I'd accepted that long ago. Today, Kyle had simply stripped away their last pretense for me.The sound of hurried footsteps broke the dead silence.Guards brought in Cora Finch, my most loyal maid. I'd once saved her life, and in that cold palace, we'd had only each other. When she saw my body, Cora threw herself over it and sobbed as if her heart would break.Don't cry, Cora. In that cold royal city, the hot soup you brought me was the only kindness that came without conditions. When Cora had cried herself out, she slowly stood and turned to face the Alpha, who stood above them all."Alpha."Cora's voice was hoarse but steady. "Before Gwen left, she told me something. She asked me not to tell you, but I have to now."Kyle looked up sharply. He stared at Cora, his eyes bloodshot, his vo

My mother rushed forward, crying, and grabbed Kyle's arm. "Alpha, please, let her go! The wolfsbane has burned through her insides. Gwen... she's been afraid of pain since she was little!"Afraid of pain.Kyle went still. It was true. I used to wince even when a needle pricked my finger. But Kyle, you don't know what it felt like to learn I was just a pawn you could throw away whenever you wanted. That hurt 10,000 times worse than the wolfsbane burning me alive. It felt as if my soul had been torn apart.Kyle's claws slowly drew back. His hands shook as he pried open my stiff fingers. He must have expected a bitter farewell letter, or at least a word of blame.Too bad. I left him nothing. I didn't owe him another word. The identity papers he'd stamped himself slid from my sleeve. They were meant to take me to the farm in the south.Kyle stared at the line on the papers. It read, "Lila. No family. No pack. Drifter."At last, he understood what his so-called "mercy" meant to me.It was a

I'd used my motion sickness, the stories about the dangerous southern lands, and even the crest my father had given me to "protect" me.The south really was wild, and I really did need to get rid of something poisonous. But it wasn't an animal. It was my body, which they'd worn down until it felt rotten through. My mother let out a short scream. With shaking hands, she tore open the sleeve of my burial dress. The sachet embroidered with "Lila" fell out, traces of grayish-white powder inside it."She planned this all along...""We drove her to her death!" Miles said."You've lost your mind! That's treason!"My father pointed at Miles and roared. "Close the coffin! Take her south now, and we'll pretend none of this ever happened!""To hell with the pack's honor!"Miles shoved my father aside, lifted my cold body from the coffin, and held me tight. "I'm taking her home!"In the grand hearth hall, Kyle stood at the top of the steps in a dark, finely patterned formal coat.He held the dazzl
