Chapter 13: The New Way

The charity gala was different this time.

Lucien said, "No wine throwing. If you get jealous, you come to me. You tell me. You don't throw. Deal?"

Milo nodded. "Deal. I will be good possessive, not bad possessive."

Lena gave him a look that said we will see.

The gala was for children's hospitals. Lucien was donating $2 million. Everyone wanted to talk to him.

Milo stayed close. Blue shirt again — his good luck shirt. Black nails. Lip piercing in. He was holding Lucien's hand tight, but not crazy tight.

Then she appeared.

Julian. Lucien's ex-business partner. 30, tall, blonde, suit that cost more than Milo's whole life, smile that said I know Lucien better than you do.

"Lucien," Julian said, hugging Lucien a little too long. "Long time. You look good. Tired, but good."

Lucien was polite. "Julian."

Julian looked at Milo. Up and down. "And this must be... Milo. I've heard a lot about you. The photographer, right? The wine story was iconic."

Milo felt that old fire in his chest. The mine mine mine fire.

Old Milo would have thrown wine. Or shouted. Or cried.

New Milo squeezed Lucien's hand and said, "Yeah, I'm Milo. Lucien's boyfriend."

"Boyfriend," Julian repeated, smirking. "For now."

Milo's nails dug into Lucien's palm. But he didn't throw. He looked up at Lucien.

Lucien looked down at him. He saw it — Milo was being good. Milo was trying so hard.

Lucien turned to Julian.

"Julian, you remember when we were partners, you always told me I needed someone to soften me up?" Lucien said, voice loud enough for the next table to hear. "You were right."

He pulled Milo in front of him, hands on Milo's waist, claiming him in front of everyone. Not hiding.

"This is Milo. He is my boyfriend. He lives in my penthouse. His photos are on my fridge. His hoodies are in my closet. My mother calls him son. If you have a problem with him, you have a problem with me. And if you have a problem with me, you lose the $2 million I'm about to donate in your name."

Julian's smile froze.

Milo's heart was beating so fast. Lucien had never claimed him like that. So public. So cold-CEO but for him.

Julian laughed awkwardly. "No problem at all. Congratulations, you two. You look... happy."

"We are," Lucien said. "Very."

Julian left.

Milo turned around in Lucien's arms. His eyes were shining.

"You defended me," he whispered.

"You defended yourself," Lucien whispered back. "You didn't throw wine. You said 'my boyfriend.' You were so good. So hot."

Milo blushed. "I wanted to throw the whole table at her— him."

"I know," Lucien said, kissing his forehead. "But you came to me instead. That's what I want. When you're jealous, come to me. Let me fix it. Let me prove I'm yours. Okay?"

Milo nodded, arms around Lucien's neck. "Okay. Are you mine? Right now? In front of everyone?"

Lucien kissed him, right there in the middle of the charity gala, with 200 rich people watching and Lena filming for PR.

"I'm yours," Lucien said against his lips. "In front of everyone. Always."

That night, Page Six posted again. But different headline:

Billionaire Beaumont and Boyfriend Milo Are Gala Goals — CEO Defends Photographer BF in Public

Photo: Lucien holding Milo from behind, Milo's freckled face looking up at him, both smiling.

Milo printed it and put it on the fridge next to Eleanor's napkin and the Tokyo receipt.

He wrote under it with black marker: Good possessive = asking, not throwing. - M

Lena saw it the next morning when she came to drop files. She read it, snorted, and wrote under it: Progress. - L

Milo and Lucien both saw it and laughed for ten minutes.
