Chapter 3 The Company Is Mine

Author: Little Shadow
I walked up to Logan, his face deathly pale. My lips curled into a cold smirk. "Dad, did you just accuse me of stealing money from you?"

I pointed to the ownership chart on the big screen.

"Three years ago, one of your investment decisions went disastrously wrong, and it nearly cost you Rivers Group. I had to sell the two properties I owned and secure venture capital to cover the losses you incurred.

"In exchange, both of you signed an agreement that you're voluntarily transferring 90% of your shares to me. In other words, Rivers Group is now mine and mine alone. The company is mine. Naturally, so is the profit I've earned from it."

Logan's lips trembled. "How dare you put all this up there! Do you have no shame?"

I scoffed at him. "Did you give a damn about me when you publicly condemned me for stealing from you?"

I didn't bother waiting for them to recover as I switched to the next slide. It showed a list of expense records.

"These are your spending records from the past six months. Two million dollars on luxury bags, three million lost at the casino, and this so-called designer suit you bought for Landon? It's a knockoff that only costs you a hundred thousand dollars maximum."

Mocking titters rippled through the crowd.

Landon looked down at his suit, his face flushed with humiliation.

My expression hardened. "I let things slide in the past because you raised me, but that changed when you crossed the line by trying to send me to prison for an idiot like him."

Logan forced a fatherly smile onto his face.

"Come on, Louis. Why are you getting so worked up? We were just upset and weren't thinking straight. Let's talk it out at home. Why make such a scene in front of everyone? We don't need to become the evening's entertainment. Turn off the projector."

Joanna quickly chimed in, "Exactly, Louis. I was only acting out of concern for Landon. He just came home, and I was afraid he'd be mistreated. You've always been understanding and forgiving. Surely, you won't hold this against us, right?"

Sadly for them, I wasn't going to touch whatever they were selling, even with a foot-long pole.

"Why didn't you suggest settling things privately when you accused me of theft? Did you ever stop to think that I was also your son when you tried to send me to prison?"

Logan's expression darkened instantly.

"Louis! Don't push your luck! Everyone will call you an ungrateful bastard if an adopted son like you sends us, his adoptive parents, to prison! Who's going to want to do business with you after that?"

Just then, Julianne's phone rang.

It was George. He had been spending most of his time abroad recovering. That was why he wasn't in attendance tonight.

Julianne immediately answered and put him on speaker.

Then, she started complaining with a smug grin on her face, "Grandpa! Louis has completely lost his mind! He humiliated me in front of everyone and pushed Landon down the stairs! I've already called off our engagement. I'm marrying Landon instead!"

George's voice shook with fury on the other end as he bellowed, "You damned fool!"

Julianne's hand shook at the force of his undeniable fury, and she nearly dropped her phone.

"Who gave you permission to call off the engagement? You useless idiot! You've never accomplished anything. Even worse, you've always managed to make things worse!"

Julianne froze. "Grandpa? But Louis was being cruel—"

"Shut your trap! Louis is the man I want as my grandson-in-law. If you can't fix this engagement, you can kiss your position in the Brooks family goodbye!"

"Dad, you can't be serious."Clara was stunned as well. She stared at Charles in disbelief. "What did you say? You gave Julianne that medicine?"Charles pointed at Clara with a trembling finger, his jaw clenched with unmistakable fury. "How dare you say that! You didn't want me to have an illegitimate child who could come back and fight for the family fortune. That's why you secretly drugged my soup to make me infertile. "How was I supposed to know it would end up affecting Julianne? You thought you'd covered your tracks perfectly, but I found out about your scheme a long time ago. I didn't want any more kids anyway, so I let it go…"Charles squeezed his eyes shut in pain. "But I never imagined Julianne would come home hungry that day and drink the very bowl of soup you'd drugged!"The truth hit Julianne like a bolt from the blue, le

I couldn't help but burst into laughter at the smug look on his face.Landon was so ridiculously stupid that it was funny, piteously so.Then, he reached for my hand as he plastered a fake smile across his face. "Louis, I was the one at fault in the past. Let me offer you a toast. Please, just let Julianne and me be together!"I instinctively took half a step back from his outstretched hand. "Don't touch me. You're disgusting."That half-step gave Landon exactly what he needed.A flash of malice crossed his eyes. Then, he suddenly threw himself backward as if I'd shoved him."Ah! My leg!" Landon collapsed onto the floor with a shrill cry, his face contorted in pain."Louis! I know you don't like me, but how could you push me?" He cried out as though he'd suffered some terrible injustice.Julianne rushed over and shoved me aside. "Louis! If anything happens to Landon, I'll make you pay with your life!"I staggered several steps from the force of the shove. However, Clara's shar

When we got home, Logan and Joanna were both cold toward me.Joanna pointed a finger at me. "Louis, how could you treat your brother like that today? He went through so much out there before finally making it home. Couldn't you have let him have his way for once?"Logan's expression hardened. "Exactly! Did you even consider how many people saw us making fools of ourselves tonight? How could you not think about what it'll do to the River family's image? Apologize to Landon. Now."Landon stood off to the side, a smug smile tugging at his lips.I swept my gaze at this family of leeches, these parasites who had been living off me."I see you're all so proud of yourselves. Very well, then."I pulled out my phone and called the bank. "Mr. Vance, cancel every card under the Rivers family's names."The living room went silent.Logan shot to his feet, his face turning stark white. "Louis! What the hell are you doing? I'm your father!""Adoptive father," I corrected him."I saved River

The room went dead silent.Clara's voice turned low and serious as she whipped around to face her daughter. "When did this happen?"Julianne looked a little embarrassed, but she still gazed at Landon with a lovestruck smile. "It's been almost two months. The doctor said the pregnancy isn't stable, so I have to avoid stress."Landon finally snapped out of his daze, his face lighting up with sheer delight. He was still a little stunned, but he quickly recovered and clasped Julianne's hand. "Julianne, really? I'm so happy!"Julianne turned to me with a smug smile. "Louis, Grandpa might've been fooled by your facade, but now that I'm carrying Landon's child? Well, let's see what he has to say!"I met her taunt with a cold stare.I didn't love Julianne. To me, this engagement was nothing more than an obligation. Nevertheless, that didn't mean I would let her trample all over my dignity. Two months pregnant?Hah! That was when George had just announced our engagement. She'd been st

Julianne was dumbfounded. She glared at me. "Louis, what did you do to my grandfather to make him so determined to marry me off to you?"I rolled my eyes at her, utterly exasperated. "Julianne, make him call off the marriage if you're so brave. Why are you yelling at me?""You!"Julianne was so furious that she raised her hand to slap me, but the man behind her caught her by the sleeve.Landon's eyes reddened, his voice shaky as he blubbered, "Julianne, don't fight with Louis because of me. This is all my fault. I never should've come home…"He started backing away as he spoke, pretending to be considerate.Julianne felt terribly sorry for him. She turned on me. "Louis, you're so calculating. You can never hope to hold a candle to Landon!"I looked at the two morons in front of me and almost laughed at their faces.I was about to speak when a sharp female voice rang out from the entryway. "Julianne, have you lost your mind?"Julianne froze and instinctively let go of Landon.
