Chapter 1

Penulis: Tranquil Phoenix
That year, Claire Aniston's parents died in a car accident. Soon after, the Aniston family went bankrupt, and Claire's grandfather suffered such a shock that he was rushed to the ICU.

Before he passed, he entrusted his network, his resources, and his only granddaughter, Claire, to George Bennett, a man who had once shared a life-or-death bond with him.

Afterward, George took Claire back to the Bennett family and made a solemn vow: she could choose any descendant of the Bennett family as her spouse.

But Claire stubbornly fell for Calvin, the illegitimate son. Although Calvin always treated her with indifference, her persistence finally paid off—he eventually agreed to marry her.

The engagement party that evening was dazzling, crowded with the city's most prominent families.

After chatting with several young women of high society, Claire realized she hadn't seen Calvin. She went upstairs to find him, but as she passed his room, a sound stopped her in her tracks—an intimate, unmistakable sound that made her cheeks burn.

Frozen, she slowly pushed open the door, only to witness a scene that stole her breath.

Calvin, shirtless, was bent over a woman.

The woman clung to him, gasping, her arms wrapped around his neck. "Calvin, I love you so much."

Calvin's movements grew more intense.

"I love you too, Iris. Even if I marry Claire, I won't touch her. You must understand… I'm marrying her only for you. As long as you get to live in this house, I'll see you every day."

Claire's body trembled uncontrollably.

She could not believe it—her fiancé was involved with her half-sister. And today, of all days, it was their engagement party!

She had known Calvin didn't love her, but she had stubbornly believed it was only because of his cold nature—that once married, he would eventually love her.

Now she realized the truth. Her devotion had been a cruel joke.

Calvin had loved Iris, the illegitimate daughter, all along. The day her parents died, Iris had been sent to the Bennett household. Though her origins were shameful, Claire had pitied her, renting her a place to live and raising her without worry. She had never imagined that this sister would one day seduce the man she loved most.

And Calvin's agreement to marry? It had only been to legitimize Iris's entry into the Bennett family.

Claire finally understood: no matter what she did, Calvin would never spare her a glance. Illegitimate son and illegitimate daughter—they were a perfect match. It was time for her to step aside.

Claire pressed a hand to her lips, stifling a sound, as tears streamed relentlessly. Her steps wavered. Her mind was blank, and she didn't even realize how she had made her way downstairs.

Inside the bedroom, Iris Aniston watched Claire leave, a smile curling at her lips. Her goal at the Bennett house wasn't just to take Calvin—she wanted everything Claire had. It was what the Aniston family owed her.

Claire stumbled down the stairs and collided with George.

Seeing her tear-streaked face, the old man grew anxious. "Claire, why are you crying? Did Calvin upset you?"

Claire's eyes, still red from crying, met his. "Grandpa George, my mind's made up. Calvin doesn't love me, and I won't force him. I'm not marrying him."

George was stunned. "But you've loved Calvin all these years. I let you pick from all the Bennett heirs, and you chose him. I poured resources into him—his business, his future—all so your life would be secure… and now this?"

Claire shook her head, tears falling. "He's in love with someone else. A forced marriage wouldn't make anyone happy."

"Don't cry, sweetheart. If not him, then we'll find you another from the family…"

"Fine. Change the groom—but keep the wedding date."

George had always indulged her; she could have whatever she wanted.

"Have you picked someone?" he asked.

"I'll draw lots," Claire said, her heart numb. She didn't care who she married anymore.

George frowned. "A lottery? Leaving your marriage to chance… isn't that too reckless?"

"Grandpa George, every eligible Bennett is more than suitable. No matter who I marry, I won't be settling, right?"

"Alright," George finally nodded. "As long as you're happy, Claire."

Claire wiped her tears. "Then in seven days, on the original wedding date, we'll hold the draw. Whoever is chosen will marry me."

"Claire, as long as this is what you want, I'll always treat you like my own granddaughter. I just want you to be happy."

Claire nodded, her eyes glistening. "Thank you, Grandpa George."

She would go through with the wedding—but she would not be marrying the groom she once chose.

Due to lack of oxygen, Iris could barely breathe."Calvin—help—"But no matter how she screamed, no one heard her.Soon, she died in agonizing pain.Calvin frantically restarted the machines, tears streaming down his face."No! Honey, don't die! Iris! Wake up!"Hearing the commotion, the doctor rushed in to save her. But it was too late—Iris was gone."I'm sorry, Mr. Bennett. We did everything we could."Calvin slumped against the wall, numb. "How… how could this happen? How…""Accept it," the doctor said gently, patting his shoulder as the staff recorded Iris's time of death.Once the doctor left, Calvin regained a cold composure. He pulled out his phone and dialed Claire."Claire… Iris is dead.""What?"Claire gripped her phone, stunned, her mind racing. She hadn't even had the chance for revenge yet. How could Iris die just like that?"Don't worry. She died painfully. Claire… I might never see you again, but I'll miss you."He hung up and left the hospital. At home,

Just as they reached the hospital ward, Claire saw Calvin sitting on the floor outside the door.He hadn't even changed his clothes. His entire body was smeared with blood, his appearance utterly disheveled. The moment he saw Claire, the dullness in his eyes suddenly lit up."Claire, you're here. You heard I was hurt, so you came to see me, didn't you?"He lunged forward and grabbed her hand, but Claire pulled away coldly."I'm here for Iris, not for you.""For Iris?"Calvin's face filled with regret. "I'm sorry, Claire. I didn't know she would go looking for Uncle Jordan last night. If I had known, I would've stopped her. You know I never wanted you to get hurt. This is all my fault—if it weren't for me—""That's enough!" The anger she'd been holding back finally exploded. "Calvin, shut up! Don't think the whole world revolves around you! I don't want to hear anything about you ever again! I'm here today because your wife murdered my parents. I will never let her go!""What?"

Claire didn't sleep at all that night. Her mind replayed the scene of her parents' deaths over and over again. That year, when she rushed to the accident site, she saw her parents trapped inside the crushed car, unable to get out, already unconscious. Just as she was about to run forward and save them, the vehicle suddenly exploded.Nothing was left. For so many years, that moment had haunted her like a nightmare. She had always believed it was nothing more than a tragic accident.Knowing she was in low spirits, Jordan cooked breakfast for her himself. When Claire came downstairs, he was wearing an apron, carefully setting a bowl of chicken soup on the table. Seeing her, he waved her over."Claire, come have some soup."For some reason, the sight of him made her want to cry."You know how to cook?""I learned from a chef," he said casually. "I know your stomach isn't good.""How did you know?" she asked, confused. Even Calvin had never noticed."There's nothing in this world

"I should be asking you—what are you doing here in the middle of the night?"Calvin was furious. Yet, once inside, his attention drifted helplessly toward Claire. He missed her—desperately. In the past, she had shadowed his every step. Her presence had filled the house, her touch in every corner. Now, the place felt hollow, stripped bare, as if she had never existed at all."Can't a person take a wrong turn?" Iris snapped. How could she admit she had come here to seduce Jordan—and failed? She had gambled for everything and ended up with nothing but utter humiliation."Show Calvin the security footage," Jordan said coolly.A servant immediately presented the recording. The moment Calvin watched it, his expression shifted completely. He turned and stared at Iris in pure disbelief."Have you lost all sense of shame?" he roared. "You actually came here to seduce my uncle? Iris, have you lost your mind? You're my wife now!""So what if I'm your wife?" she shot back. "Does being ma

Jordan shot Iris a single, glacial look, and she flinched, instantly letting go of him."Ah! You're so fierce!" she squealed."What exactly do you want?" Jordan asked, his voice like ice."You tell me," Iris replied, her fingers slowly moving to unbutton her dress. "I just want… a night with you, Jordan." Her voice was thick with brazen audacity. From the balcony upstairs, Claire's eyes widened as she watched the scene unfold. She had never imagined Iris could stoop this low. Stealing her fiancé had been bold enough—but now she dared to seduce her husband? And on the very night her own marriage to Calvin had just been registered? The sheer nerve was staggering."If that's all you came for… get out," Jordan said, rising to leave."Wait! Don't go!" Iris cried, stepping forward. "I really do have something to tell you about Claire! Don't you want to know how her parents died?"Claire's grip tightened on the balcony railing. Her parents… how did they die? Weren't they killed in a c

"You… I'll strangle you, I swear!" Calvin yelled."Go ahead, strangle me! Kill me, and you'll end up in prison! I don't think you'll ever climb out of that hole!"The two of them argued viciously, voices rising, faces flushed with rage. But the driver's calm, measured tone cut through their chaos."Mr. Bennett, I advise you to cooperate. You know Master George's temper—and Master Jordan's. If you don't register with Miss Iris as instructed, I can't imagine what the consequences will be."Hearing this, both of them gradually fell silent.Calvin feared Jordan because he'd seen his methods firsthand. One of Jordan's former subordinates had once stolen confidential company files—and had been made to disappear for days, reemerging barely recognizable. Calvin had no desire to share that fate, so he had no choice but to comply."Iris," he said, his voice tight with suppressed anger. "If you want to live, just cooperate and register with me. Isn't this what you always wanted? To marry me
