chapter 174

RONAN

The smoke stung my lungs, each breath dragging fire down my throat. My vision blurred, ears ringing from the gunfire and the hiss of the canisters.

“Ronan!” Brandon’s voice cut through the haze, rough, urgent.

I coughed hard, staggering along the catwalk, gun still in my grip. “Here!”

A shadow loomed through the smoke. Brandon, waving me down, his shirt smeared with dust and blood. He grabbed my arm, dragging me toward the ladder.

“We have to move! They’ll circle back once the smoke clears!”

I wanted to stay. Wanted to hunt Kennedy down in that choking fog until my bullets tore through his chest. But my shoulder throbbed, my lungs burned, and Dahlia wasn’t here. He had made sure of that.

Clenching my jaw, I followed him down the ladder.

The warehouse was chaos, bodies sprawled across the floor, bullet casings scattered like dead insects. Smoke curled in thick ribbons, shrouding everything in grey.

We moved fast, crouching low, weapons ready. But Kennedy was gone. His

Chapter 173RONANThe darkness pressed in like a suffocating blanket, swallowing even the faint outlines of the warehouse. My grip on the gun tightened, my ears straining for every sound.Boots thundered across the catwalk. Metal clanged. The faint hum of the speaker still whispered Dahlia’s voice, Ronan… help…mocking me, driving me mad.“Stay low!” I barked at Brandon, dropping behind a stack of broken crates.A split second later, gunfire erupted. Bullets ripped through the wood, splinters flying across my arm. Brandon cursed and dove behind a metal beam, his own gun firing back into the dark. The air filled with smoke and the acrid stench of gunpowder. Every shot resounding in my skull. My heart wasn’t beating normally, it was roaring, like a drum of war.One of Kennedy’s men leaned too far over the catwalk. I didn’t hesitate. My shot found him square in the chest. He screamed, tumbled, and hit the concrete with a crack.“Got one,” I growled, ducking as bullets shredded the crate a

169RONANThe text wouldn’t leave my head. My wife’s name glared at me from Brandon’s phone like a cruel tease. Ivana and I… hurry… followed by an address. My heart raced with every passing second. I didn’t even care if it was a trap. If there was even a sliver of hope that Dahlia had reached out to me, I had no choice but to go.“Let’s move,” I ordered firmly, rushing into the house and grabbing a hand gun I'd tucked away for a while now. Sliding into the driver’s seat once I got outside before Brandon could argue further. He shot me a worried look. “Ronan, think about it. This could be Kennedy. He could’ve sent this himself.”I gripped the steering wheel, jaw tightening. “And what if it isn’t? What if Dahlia risked everything to get this out to us, and we’re wasting time doubting it?”Silence. Brandon said nothing more, only slid into the passenger seat, his face etched with the same desperation I felt. The drive was suffocating. Every turn of the tires, every flick of the headligh

Chapter 171DAHLIAMy stomach dropped. The figure stood perfectly still in the corner of the room, half-swallowed by shadows.I couldn’t make out his face at first, just the outline of shoulders, the faint gleam of eyes fixed on us like a predator waiting for the right moment.“I was wondering when you’d come back,” the voice said, low and almost casual, but with a hint of something that made my skin crawl.Every muscle in my body went rigid.Ivana froze beside me, her breathing shallow. “Who are you?” she asked, her tone braver than mine, surprising me.The figure stepped forward, and the dim light from the street light outside flashed over his face. Not Gilbert. Not Kennedy.Someone else.Someone I didn’t recognize. But the smirk on his lips told me enough. He wasn’t here to save us.“You’ve made my job a lot easier,” he said, his eyes flicking between us like he was sizing up a pair of bargaining chips.“Running right into me saves me the trouble of looking.”I moved a step in fron

Chapter 170DAHLIAThe silence was suffocating but I didn't mind. If it meant the both of us being safe, then I could deal with it.“You know, sometimes I hate that I have a sister like you,” Ivana mumbled, her eyes on me.I didn’t respond.I placed my index finger on my lips, gesturing for her to shut up as the footsteps drew closer.“I hate you, Dahlia…” Ivana whispered again. Her gaze on me was distant and unfriendly.I paid no heed to her and simply looked out through a tiny opening in the door. It was already night time, everywhere was dark, but I could see the silhouettes of our pursuers. They seemed to have increased in number. I couldn’t count them, and I didn’t want to try. My whole body was tense, the kind of stillness you force yourself into when you know even the sound of your heartbeat feels too loud.My breathing was shallow, inhale, exhale, repeat. But even that felt like a chore. They passed dangerously close to the dog house, their boots crunching against the gravel,

Chapter 169DAHLIAIvana didn’t waste another second. She swung her legs over the windowsill and jumped.“Ivana, wait!” I reached for her, but my fingers only brushed the hem of her shirt before she was gone. The sickening thud of her landing made my stomach twist. She let out a small groan, but before I could even process it, she looked up at me with urgency.“Come on!” she whispered loudly, waving at me like we were escaping a burning building.Against every rational thought screaming in my head, I climbed out of the window. The rough concrete wall scraped against my palms as I slid down, my shoes finding no grip until I hit the ground. My knees buckled on impact, and the sting of fresh cuts tore through my shins.“Ugh, damn it,” I muttered, feeling the warm trickle of blood beneath my jeans.Ivana was already moving, clutching her side. She’d gotten scraped up too, a long red line running down her forearm. But then I noticed them.Three men, dressed in dark clothing, walking with p
