ELENA

I stepped inside, locking the door behind me. I let out a tired sigh as I stepped into the quiet apartment.

What a day! It had been a grind at the office today. I was already looking forward to just going through the digital files handed over to me.

I made my way to the bedroom and dropped my bag on the bed, placing my phone and keys on the nightstand.

There was quite a bit to work on, and lately, it felt like my workload had been increasing.

Maybe I was being paranoid. I didn'

The restaurant we finally stopped at was really cozy for an afternoon. It wasn't overly crowded, and the atmosphere was comfortable enough to make me want to settle in. Once we were seated, Cassie wasted no time in pointing to a variety of dishes and appetizers that made me giggle. She said she wanted to try the ones she pointed out. I had once imagined Ronan and I going out for dinner... or lunch. Well, this was close. He just asked for salmon, roasted vegetables and a glass of water while I asked for grilled chicken sandwich and fries. For someone who had ordered so much food, Cassie seemed determined to try everything. As we ate, she launched into a nonstop chatter, eagerly passing a bite of her appetizer across the table for me to taste. I focused on the food, briefly forgetting the situation of things. In the middle of her chatter, a random thought drifted through my mind, for some reason, the topic of their parents didn't come up at all. I didn't dwell on it though.

"I really have to go with you?" She looked at me like it was obvious. "Yeah, you have to come. Besides, you and Ronan need to actually get to know each other more, especially since you literally bumped into each other at a club and barely even said hello. It would be nice to get friendly with each other." I pressed my lips together. Friendly, huh? That was certainly one way to describe what Ronan and I had been doing lately. "Plus you know this city better than I do, you're driving and helping me navigate," she added . Oh, that was true. "Alright," I said, not wanting her to imagine why I was reluctant to spend time with her brother. "Great! I'll call Ronan now." I nodded. "Let me go get you the spare key for you, before I forget." "Alright, thank you." I stood and headed toward the bedroom. I got there and I closed the door behind me and rested my back against it, closing my eyes briefly. I sucked in a long, shaky breath, letting it out slowly. "Calm down, Lena. Com

We finally got to the apartment building. We both said hi to the doorman and I informed him that Cassie is not a stranger and would be staying with me for a little while. We took the elevator up to my floor, and I unlocked the door, stepping aside to let her enter first. Cassie walked in and I followed, closing the door behind us as we walked to the living room. She looked around with interest. "Oh, this place has a nice touch." I chuckled, closing the door behind us. "Thank you." "No, seriously." She turned, taking in the furniture and the little decorations. "I like it. It feels like you." "Thank you," I laughed. "Alright, come on." I led her to the bedroom where she set her suitcase down and glanced around before following me back to the living room. She kicked off her shoes, sinking comfortably into the couch while I sat on the floor across from her. So," she began, turning to look at me. "Are you busy today? Do you have anything major to take care of, or are yo

"Look, the original plan was to surprise you," she said cheerfully. "Only problem is, I don't know exactly where you live, and for some reason, my app is glitching out and I can't book a ride even if I wanted to." My eyes had widened and my breath caught in my throat as I tried to process her words. She went on. "So, as a matter of fact, I'm at the airport right now, so you're going to have to come and pick me up right away." "What?" I blurted out in panic. Ronan lifted his face from my cheek, staring at me with a slight frown. He didn't say anything, but he was clearly trying to connect the sudden shift in my demeanor to the phone on my ear. On the other end of the line, Cassie let out a cheerful, apologetic laugh. "I know... I'm sorry if I'm interrupting you if you were busy... but seriously, I need a ride. Hurry up." I swallowed hard, desperately trying to get a grip on my racing pulse. "I... yeah. Okay. I'll be on my way to the airport right now." "Awesome, I'll be w

RONAN I could feel the thump of the low bass beneath my feet. It was the first time here this week. I and Trevor sat across from each other. He leaned back as he studied me for a moment. "So," he started. "Who is Elena to you?" I didn't respond. I just raised the glass to my lips, taking a slow sip of the scotch before setting it back down. He didn't relent. "What? Is she your girlfriend?" "No," I replied. He raised a brow. "Ah. Right. Just something casual with her, then..." "No," I cut him off and didn't say anything else. He paused, narrowing his eyes slightly as if he was trying to piece together the meaning of the silence. I didn't want to answer him. I didn't have an answer to give him that made sense, even to myself. I turned my attention to the drink on the table, though I wasn't particularly interested in finishing it. The truth was, I had not quite figured out who Lena was to me. The chemistry between us was undeniable, pulling us together every time w

  • His Claim, Her Desire    Chapter 36: A Friendly Gesture

The following morning, Monday came with a feel of energy. I couldn’t wait to get to work. I was already eager to go to the director's office and speak to her about what I had figured out in the proposal. By the time I arrived at the office, I was already mentally arranging how I would explain everything. I settled down and waited for a while before going through my notes one last time before printing out the relevant files. I arranged the papers neatly in a folder, picked it up, and headed for the director's office. I knocked twice. "Come in," she called out. I opened the door and stepped inside. She was seated behind her desk, going through a document. She looked up. "Good morning, ma'am." "Good morning. Is everything alright?" "Yes, ma'am. I went through my proposal again and was hoping to discuss what I discovered." She gestured toward the chair opposite her as she set her document aside. "Have a seat." I sat down, placing the folder on the desk. "Go ahead,"
