One reason Leila loathed Kelvin’s business trips was because of how unpredictable they could be. They could last anything from two days to two weeks. Five days had passed, but he wasn’t home yet. The video calls, texts, and regular calls weren’t enough. She hadn’t felt as lonely as she did without him. So when she got off work, she flagged down a taxi and gave the driver directions to her best friend’s house.

Her stomach cramped, and she rubbed a hand over it. According to her calendar, her period wasn’t due for another one week. Maybe she was hungry, but she hadn’t skipped lunch today. Kelvin must be in touch with the staff at Pacific because if she was a little too late to lunch, he would contact her to know why she chose to starve.

On arriving at Freya’s place, she rang the doorbell. There was no response the first time, but on a second try, the door opened. Freya stepped out in an oversized t-shir

Kelvin was failing. There was no other way for him to explain his inability to protect his wife. He got off the bed, his thoughts too cluttered. He needed a smoke, a way to clear his head. But when he reached the bathroom door, he traced his steps back and stopped by the bed. Leila looked peaceful, with a faint red mark on her cheek, like someone had repeatedly hit her. If she really did that to herself, it made no sense. Why? What did she mean by dirty?Where was she yesterday? Kelvin had been too excited to return home, and even sent her a picture of himself at the dining table with a meal set for two. Olef had done a good job of preparing a special dinner, but it was packed up in the fridge because he couldn’t bring himself to eat when his wife was distressed. He should have known something was wrong when she didn’t reply to his message or answer his calls. For now, he contacted the chef to switch u

“Leilani. It’s me.”Kelvin? No, the voice didn’t sound like her husband. But it broke through her subconscious. Her screams died down, and Leila’s eyes snapped open.It was Charles. In flesh and blood.Anger, confusion, hate, and a flood of other negative emotions coursed through her veins. She glanced at the unconscious man in the corner and back at Charles. This was a familiar route to her, so this was too much of a coincidence.“You were following me, weren’t you?” she accused. She moved before she could think too deeply about her actions and shoved him. He staggered but straightened up. “What is wrong with you? I told you. I’m done. We are done.”“Where I come from, the word is: Thank you,” he said. He s

“No. Not really.”“Jesus, Leila. Has he done anything for you?” Freya asked. She nodded, and her friend shook her head. “Ah, I see. He’s suffering in silence.”“I don’t want him to suffer,” Leila blurted out.“Yeah. Three months is a long time.”If they were sticking to the actual time, it was way over three months.“But the thing is—” Leila looked around like they had another audience. Her voice lowered as she continued. “I don’t really know how to do those stuff, and I don’t want to embarrass myself. Charles and I did things differently.”Freya sneered. “Don’t you ever mention that cunt’s name around me, comprehend?” Giving her no chance to reply, she asked, “So, what

Days blended into each other. Every moment spent with Kelvin made Leila thirst for more. He was what she hadn’t realized she needed in her life. She checked her wristwatch for the umpteenth time, excited at the thought of having lunch with him again today. They had built a stable routine over the last few weeks, one that felt natural, like a real couple. He still dropped her off somewhere close to work, picked her up for lunch, and sent a cab to drive her to the house. He had hinted at getting her a car a few times. Each time, she acted like he never mentioned it. She hadn’t owned a car for half a decade, and she didn’t necessarily miss it. There were cabs and buses for her routes, so she was fine. Her bag vibrated at her feet, and she tore her gaze from the monitor screen that had gone black. Since Stars Glow was put on hold, she’d been on the lookout for potential investors. Kelvin had go

“If word gets out that we lost the investors of this project, it might be difficult for us to get new partners in the future,” Amara began. He pinched the bridge of his nose, this topic heightening his anger. While she was right, this wasn’t the answer to what he had asked her. It only showed how much he wouldn’t like what she truly had to say. “It will be a dent to our reputation, sir.”“What do you support, Amara?”“Putting it on a temporary hold to focus on our other timely projects,” she continued. “If we want to launch it this year, we’d need other investors to handle it. It can’t be us now, sir.”Kelvin gulped, hating the words that came out of her mouth because they were true. For Stars Glow to succeed, they had to spend a lot from the start. That was why he wanted investors to handle it. No money would come from them, but the resources and technical know-how would be up
