Her dull brown eyes still radiated with an internal fire, and although her body had been battered and abused, starved emotionally and physically, her spirit was still full of fire. Her ability to acknowledge the fact that her own mate sorely needed to be put to death truly made my own heart hurt for her. I could never imagine the internal torment she had to be going through. I turned to walk away from her the second time and once again her fragile voice broke though the room. “He needs to me killed. He will never stop and there will never be peace for anyone as long as he lives. He is no better than a rabid dog at this point.” I slowly turned and cast my eyes upon her face. She was matter of fact, and unremorseful as she spoke. I had an entirely new admiration, not to mention empathy for her. I gulped and nodded as my own heart pained for her.

CHAPTER #44“A RACE TO THE FREELAND”Meredith’s POV: I awoke in a room that I was unaccustomed to, my eyes flickering as I attempted to regain my bearings. A faint headache lingered as I slid up the headboard, positioning myself upright and allowing my eyes to adjust. The room was still predominantly dark, however the silver haze peering over the mountains alluded to smoke, hence the fabled name smokey mountains. My room had one small table lamp still lit on low across the room nearest the door. My dream had been so vivid, the vision of my friend calling to me, her pleas for help. I began to remember everything that had transpired only a few hours ago and figured that all had left to find Bridgette as everything was silent now.
