Chapter 9

 (Damon)

Lost in thought, I don’t hear Kieran approach till he speaks, “we’ve lost the trail Alpha.”

I snap my head towards him, “lost the trail? That’s not possible, a location spell only breaks when the person that created it breaks it or when the person vanishes, Carlisle wouldn’t break the spell, she did it for her own protection. So why have we lost the trail?”

I wait for Kieran to give me an answer to my thoughts but when I turn towards him, I realize even he is lost in thought, “Kieran? Are you okay?”

“Yes, I apologize Alpha, I’m just thinking of how strange this is. The trolls we fought vanished, the dead bodies also vanished, it seems like the trolls have control of magic or they have someone who controls magic.”

I try to sift through my memories of what my father had told me about trolls, all I could come up with was the knowledge that they had an immortal king but he was rumored to be an old geezer. What would an old troll want with my mate? “Kieran, do you not find it suspicious that the trolls did all that and only vanished when they found my mate? It seems as though they came for her particularly.”

“It would explain why they left your mother and sister and went away with the Luna but what would trolls want with the Luna? She’s just a Fae.”

Kieran’s words finally make me think straight, Carlisle was not just Fae, she was a guardian, my mother had said something about guardians being powerful beings. “Get the men, we are going back to the pack, I need to find out more about my mate’s bloodline or the half of it to fully uncover this mystery and my mother may know something.”

“Alright Alpha.”

“Thank you Beta for your devotion, I know you’d rather be with your mate preparing for the birth of your child.” Kieran’s mate Adriana was expecting their first child, we had to make it back safely so he could see his offspring.

“It’s fine Alpha, this is my duty and we need the Luna.”

“Alright, let’s head back before it’s sundown.”

••••

My mum comes rushing out as soon as we step in front of my home, “son, why are you back so early? Did you find her? Where’s she?”

Steadying her stance, I pull my mother towards me for a hug, I can feel her shaking, this entire thing really has her shaken up, my mother is usually not one to bow to pressure and fear easily. She must be really worried.

“We lost the trail mum but we’ll go back but before then, I need to know everything you know about Carlisle’s mother or her people, the guardians.”

“The guardians? But what does that have to do with her capture?”

“We have to look at all sides, what would the troll king want with Carlisle? A Fae? We have to look at other sides of what they might want with her and to do that, I need to know everything about the blood that flows in her veins.”

“Alright, let’s go in, I’ll tell you everything I know of guardians.”

My mother squeezes my hands and walks quickly ahead of me, her shoulders hunched as though she is in deep thought. What exactly is it about the guardians that makes their existence so secretive and this hidden?

Increasing my pace to meet up with my mother, I catch up to her and stretch my hands to open the door as we get to my room, opening the door, I gesture to her to go in and she smiles at me in appreciation, stepping in slowly, she immediately finds her way to the bed and sits on it with a sigh, patting the space next to her, she motions for me to sit.

Pulling at my shirt that has now been soaked with sweat from running around to find my mate, I pull it over my head and sit down next to me mum, taking her hands in mine and squeezing it in a show of reassurance for her to speak.

There’s a few moments of silence before she starts talking, “the guardians are Night walkers. That is the first thing you should know.”

“Night walkers?”

“Yes, they have known to only walk in the night but now, it is only because they choose to. A long time ago, they made a deal with the witches that allows them to walk in daylight but with how much they value their secrecy, they still stay out of the way in daylight. Guardians operate only when they can be safe from human view.”

“If they are so hidden, how do they help with wars?”

“They are guardians, they’ll always be in charge of protecting the otherworldliness, so even when they are in hiding, they are watching and they have spies everywhere.”

“Here too?”

“Yes, even here. It is their duty to be in touch with everything that goes on so they can come to the defense of anyone in need or stop wars when necessary. Now, to tell you about the guardians.”

“The guardians were first formed during the first war between the wolves and Night walkers. They were basically born of night walkers and magic, to keep the balance. They had been an uprising in the ranks of the night walkers and the only people that could subdue them were people that had the same strength as them, though the wolves had the advantage of sunlight over the night walkers, they were allies with other powerful beings like the demons so while they slept, their allies took their place.”

“Wow, so they succeeded in killing a lot of wolves?”

“Yes, they did but some of the night walkers did not agree with the war, at the time, wolves and vampires were known to mate, so it was basically putting families against each other and the witches and a few of the night walkers did not like that. So they carried out a ritual to create the guardians.”

“They were created? From spells? How were they able to procreate?”

“Most of the children of the guardians are children born from a guardian and another powerful being. While they can procreate, the spell only allows them the chance to be with a child only once if they are procreating with another guardian as night walkers are basically dead and vampires should not easily procreate but as guardians, they are allowed to.”

“Guardians also come with different powers, along with being vampires, the ritual also blessed them with all kinds of magic, it is why the witches work with them so easily, they possess powers even the witches cannot boast of. So the witches need them and they need the witches. What I do not understand though is, guardians do not have mates. They are just expected to procreate with anyone they feel a connection with but Carlisle is your mate.”

“It may be because she’s fae?”

“No. I do not believe it is that, the Fae also do not work with the mating system that we do.”

“How then is she my mate?”

“The witches may have something to do with it. That is what I suspect.”

“So my mate may not be my mate?”

Shaking her head sadly, my mother squeezes my hand, “I do not want to believe it is so but it is a suspicion.”

“fuck.”
