Chapter 3

Penulis: Year on Year
Heath turned and walked out of the house. The sound of the door slamming echoed through the living room, and a small ornament on the TV stand rattled and fell to the floor.

It was a cup Heath and I had made together at a pottery studio three years ago.

The living room finally fell quiet. I turned off the TV, leaned back against the couch, and closed my eyes.

My family was struggling financially, and Dad always said I'd be better off working than staying in school, so I dropped out of high school. I did construction work and became an apprentice at an auto repair shop. Eventually, I saved up enough money to start my own hardware business.

I met Penny Reed through a family friend. She was pretty, had a way with words, and back then, I thought marrying her was the luckiest thing that had ever happened to me.

I paid for the wedding, put money down on our house, and covered all the other costs of getting married. By the time it was over, I'd burned through all my savings and was deep in debt.

Married life was peaceful enough for the first six months. But things started going downhill after Heath was born.

Penny complained that I didn't make enough money, that the hardware store was dirty, and that we didn't even have a decent car. She didn't want to take care of the baby, so she left him with Mom and spent her days playing cards and going shopping.

Then Penny started coming home later and later, until eventually, she stopped coming home at all.

When I went to look for her, she berated me in front of others for being a good-for-nothing, and claimed that marrying me was the greatest misfortune of her life.

Penny wanted a divorce, so she began acting hysterically. Once, she even picked up Heath and stood at the edge of the balcony, threatening to let go if I didn't sign the papers.

Heath wailed in terror. I knelt on the ground, begging her, and eventually signed the papers.

After that, Penny cleaned out the last bit of our savings and vanished without a trace.

Heath was just two at the time. He had no idea what had happened and cried for his mom every night. All I could do was carry him around the house, walking in circles while telling him that Penny had gone far away for work.

I had to be both parents to Heath. I strapped him to my back and brought him to the construction site and got chewed out by the foreman for bringing a baby to work. When I ran a street stall, I kept him in a cardboard box beside me, calling out to customers with one hand and swatting mosquitoes away with a fan in the other.

Looking back, every hardship I'd faced in my life came down to one thing.

I was uneducated, didn't know any better, was terrible at judging people, and didn't have what it took to make good money.

If I'd stayed in school a few more years and known more about the world, even just a little, maybe Penny wouldn't have been able to trick me into losing everything, and Heath wouldn't have had to suffer alongside me.

So every time Heath's grades slipped, I couldn't help but worry. Whenever I saw the numbers on his report card go down, I was afraid he'd grow up to be just like me, weak and helpless, with people walking all over him.

I pushed him to study harder.

I thought I was doing it for his own good. I thought that when he grew up, he'd understand and thank me.

But Heath hated me. He could watch me collapse on the floor and just walk away.

When I opened my eyes again, the light in the living room had begun to fade. My phone showed that it was 6:40 pm.

By now, the college entrance exam had already ended.

I stood up and went to the kitchen to wash my face. I turned the faucet all the way up, and it wasn't until the cold water hit my face that I felt like I was still alive.

There was still food in the fridge from yesterday. I took it out and started making dinner, grabbing enough for one more person.

I stared at the extra food for a while before cooking it anyway.

Dinner was ready soon enough. I was the only one at the table, eating the two dishes I'd made.

It wasn't until halfway through the meal that it hit me. I was still making Heath's favorite dishes out of habit. It had been ingrained in me for so long that I didn't even think about it anymore.

I got up from the couch and paced around the living room before sitting back down. I opened my notes app, copied the reminders I'd put together previously, and sent them to Heath. Then I added, "I have your documents. I'll go with you during registration."He replied, "Okay."That night, I made three dishes and cooked an extra serving of pasta. Halfway through dinner, after briefly hesitating, I took a picture and sent it to Heath. "I cooked too much. I can't finish it."A minute later, he sent me a picture of a bowl of instant noodles topped with a fried egg. The egg was a little burnt around the edges, but the yolk was still whole. He wrote, "I fried the egg myself."I zoomed in on the photo. The egg white was definitely a little burnt, but the yolk was perfectly intact. It was almost like he'd used a mold to shape it.Heath had never fried an egg before. Whenever he tried to join me in the kitchen, I'd chase him out, telling him that the cooking fumes were bad for him and that

Health abruptly lifted his head.I said, "I'm not trying to force you into anything. I'm just relaying the information. If you want to repeat your final year, do it. If you don't, then don't. You can decide for yourself."We were silent for a long time. Heath lowered his head and stared at his feet."You weren't like this before." His voice was soft, almost as if he were talking to himself. "You never used to ask me what I wanted. You just told me what I was supposed to do."I didn't say anything."You were always telling me to get first place and get into a top university. It was always, 'Heath, you have to do this. Heath, you have to do that.'" Heath's eyes turned red. "You never asked me what I wanted. You've changed."His voice shook. "You're not my dad… My dad would never talk to me like this. He would never agree to let me skip the collage entrance exam. He would never take me to the doctor in the middle of the night. He would never cook soup for me…"Heath trailed off, te

Heath began to say, "I…"I said, "You can leave after your fever subsides tomorrow. Come home tonight."Heath fell silent. The cab drove through the night. Neon lights passed by the window, flickering across Heath's face. When we arrived home, I unlocked the door. Heath stood at the entrance, slowly taking off his shoes. He looked at the plain, dark blue slippers in the shoe cabinet. I'd washed them and left them where they always were.He stared at them for a few seconds, then slipped them on.Heath's eyes scanned every inch of the house as he entered, taking in the dining table, the couch, the TV stand, and the kitchen sliding door. His room door was closed. He paused briefly as he passed it but didn't open it.I led him to my room. I found a clean T-shirt and a pair of shorts in the wardrobe and laid them on the bed, then dug an ear thermometer out of the medicine kit and placed it on the nightstand."The clothes are yours. I bought them before, but you never wore them, so

Heath didn't move.I tried to pull him up, but he jerked his arm away weakly."Liam." The pillow muffled Heath's voice, and his stuffy nose made it hard to understand him. "Why did you come? You said you weren't going to care about me anymore… You said you were done with me…" His shoulders began to shake. "You said you wouldn't care about me anymore. How could you go back on your word…"My eyes stung, but I didn't allow the tears to fall. I crouched beside him and looked at the back of his head. His messy hair was spread across the pillow, and a small patch of new growth showed at the roots.Back when he lived at home, I was always the one who cut his hair with clippers. He used to complain that barbershops were too expensive and say, "Dad can cut it just fine."I said, "Heath, let's go to the doctor first. After that, if you still want to cut ties with me, I won't stop you. You're running a fever of 102.9 degrees. If something happens to you in this windowless room, what am I sup

Heath's voice was so hoarse that I could barely hear him. "Was it Jason who sold me out?""No," I lied. I didn't want him to think that Jason had betrayed him."Just leave." His hand, braced against the doorframe, began to tremble, but he gritted his teeth and lifted his chin, looking at me with that stubborn expression I knew so well. "I told you, we're not family anymore."I didn't move. "You have a fever.""I know.""Let's get you to the hospital.""No.""Heath." I stood in the doorway, my voice calm. "If you won't let me in, I'll stand right here. If you close the door, I'll stand outside. You have two choices. Either you come to the hospital with me, or I'll stand here until you agree to go."Heath glared at me, his lips moving slightly. He probably wanted to say something harsh, but the fever was so high that his mind was barely functioning. Then he swayed and pitched forward.I reached out and caught him, and he struggled weakly in my arms."Let me go…" He rasped the w

I said, "He didn't take the exam."Janice's smile froze. She tried to say something to smooth things over, but after a long hesitation, she only managed to say, "Well, kids these days have different career choices. College isn't the only way…"The elevator reached my floor. I smiled, stepped out, and let the doors close behind me.I couldn't sleep that night. The next morning, I made a few calls.First, I contacted Jorja and asked about the possibility of Heath repeating his senior year. She told me that he was still enrolled in the school system. If he wanted to repeat his senior year, he could register to take the exam again next year. She also offered to check with the school's academic office about the registration dates and procedures."But Mr. Hanson…" Jorja hesitated. "With Heath's current state of mind, do you think he'd be willing to repeat his senior year?""I don't know. I'll have to ask him first.""Okay. Let me know after you've talked to him."Then I called a dis
