Chapter 2

Autor: Fiery Cow
When I froze in the doorway, Calvin looked at me with an expression that said, "I knew it."

Even so, he rubbed his hands together, pretending to be all nervous. "Too bad I'm broke. A whole day of delivering takeout only gets me, like, 80 bucks. Are you going to look down on me for only being able to treat you to boxed meals like this, Tessa?"

I snapped out of it, and my stomach growled in hunger.

"Of course not. I was adopted, and my adoptive parents stopped supporting me once I got into college," I said.

"I worked part-time to save up for tuition. To save money, I usually bought cheap bread and paired it with free soup from the cafeteria. For me, these buffet-style boxed meals are already luxurious enough."

I told Calvin the truth openly, without a trace of diffidence or embarrassment in my eyes. Once I finished, I couldn't wait any longer and hurried inside the restaurant, making a beeline for one of the metal food trays.

If it had been Yvonne in my place, she probably would've slammed the tray over Calvin's head and told him to get lost. But my eyes were practically shining as I moved down the line, piling food onto my tray.

"Sweet and sour pork? I love that. Mashed potatoes? I love that. Shakshuka? I love that. Bread rolls? I love that…"

Calvin followed me. When he saw my tray piled high with food and the way I dug in with such gusto, a trace of tenderness flickered in his eyes.

"So you really do love this stuff. You weren't just saying that to fool me."

I was too busy stuffing my face to hear a word he said.

Compared to a glutton like me, Calvin clearly wasn't a fan of these greasy dishes. After forcing down a few bites, he put his cutlery down. Everything he couldn't finish ended up in my stomach.

When I finally polished it all off, I patted my round, full belly and thanked him profusely. "Thanks for this. This was the most satisfying meal I've had all year."

"Don't be so easy to please. Once I start making real money, I'll take you out for something way better," Calvin said. His gaze darkened faintly, and the corners of his lips lifted in the hint of a smile.

When he offered to walk me home, I waved him off. "I'm never going back there. I'm planning to stay in a cheap hostel for a few days while I look for a job."

I remembered that, in the chat logs, Calvin had always been curious about what Yvonne's real life looked like. Even though she'd gone missing as a kid, she hadn't suffered a day in her life—some kind stranger had picked her up.

She couldn't make up a tragic backstory, so every time Calvin asked, she just turned on the charm and dodged the question.

So now, when he probed about my situation, I spoke freely and without guilt.

"I was adopted from an orphanage. A few days after they brought me home, my adoptive parents' biological daughter, who'd gone missing, was sent home by the stranger who found her.

"From then on, I became a thorn in her side. She came up with all sorts of ways to bully me. My adoptive parents knew about it; they just couldn't be bothered to step in. But they did at least give me food and a roof over my head, and they paid for my schooling. I'm still truly grateful to them."

As Calvin listened, his hands slowly balled into fists. He asked, "So you just put up with it? You let that real daughter walk all over you?"

I nodded and tugged up my sleeve, showing him the old scars on my arms. Some were from where Yvonne had burned me with matches, and some were from where she'd scratched me with nails. There was even one from when she'd egged a dog on to bite me.

"It's fine. I've already graduated from college, so I can rely on myself from now on. Once I've saved up enough money, I'll pay my adoptive parents back for everything and officially cut ties with them," I said.

"Tessa… when we started talking online, I honestly thought you were just pretending to be pitiful to scam me."

Now that Calvin had seen everything for himself, he no longer suspected that I was lying to him. After some thought, he looked steadily into my eyes. "If you could make one wish right now, what would you want?"

  • I Can See Everyone's Real Bank Balance   Chapter 10

Faced with Yvonne's meltdown, all I felt was that old, suffocating fear. Years of swallowing every insult and never fighting back had trained me too well. My mind went blank.I could only stand there and watch as she smashed my desk, ripped all my documents to pieces, and turned me into a laughingstock in front of the entire office."You're just a pathetic orphan, Tessa! What makes you think you deserve a life like this? Look at yourself. Do you seriously think you're good enough for Calvin? If I can't have him, you can forget about it, too!" Yvonne shrieked. She came at me again, her eyes blazing as she raised her hand for a slap.Suddenly, a tall, solid figure stepped in front of me. Calvin's hand closed around her wrist like iron, and he shoved her back."You just assaulted and humiliated someone for no reason, barged into my company, and trashed our office. The security cameras caught every second of it," he said icily. "If I don't see you locked up for at least a few years,

I smacked my forehead.Right.For someone with a ten-figure bank balance, looking into a person was child's play. I'd been so stupid not to have realized that. I should've figured it out the moment I joined the company. Calvin had already dug up every last detail about me then.Calvin continued, "That was when I realized that the Cindy I knew online had been lying to me all along, but the Tessa I met in real life was completely, undeniably real. I never expected that my impulse to pretend to be broke would actually give me the chance to meet you."He finally told me that before he met "Cindy" in person, he'd already prepared himself for the possibility that she was just a gold digger. The whole poor act had mainly been a test to see whether she would drop the act and show her true colors, or if she really was a pitiful, kind, and naive woman. If it had been the latter, he would've been willing to use his resources to help her."But ultimately, it was Yvonne's material and vain at

I knew Calvin wouldn't take me back to that budget buffet place. I just didn't expect him to go straight to a fine-dining place where the average per-person cost was several thousand dollars. As I sat there in that high-end restaurant, I had no idea what to do with myself or even where to put my hands. Thankfully, the server was very considerate. She patiently explained which utensils to use for which course. To honor the price tag, I listened carefully to the introduction of every single dish. When it came time to eat, I polished each course off before moving on to the next. I refused to waste a bite.Seeing that I was still the same glutton as before made Calvin smile in that familiar way I knew. He said, "Seeing you eat so happily really puts me at ease. So, what do you think tastes better—fine dining or the 15-dollar boxed meals?""The boxed meals, of course," I answered without even thinking. "The portions are huge, and I love all the dishes. The food here is delicious, but th

Before Yvonne could answer, Calvin rolled the car window up and told the driver to go. No matter how desperately she cried and begged outside, the Rolls-Royce drove off without a shred of mercy. It was my first time in a car as luxurious as this, and my real identity had just been exposed. I was so nervous that I shrank into myself.I could feel Calvin watching me with obvious interest. With my head ducked low, I apologized again, very seriously."I was wrong for lying to you. I actually had plenty of chances to tell you the truth, but I didn't. That just makes things worse."I'd never really had any friends growing up; it was rare to meet someone I clicked with this much. I was terrified of losing you as my only friend and meal buddy, so I just kept making the same mistake over and over."Being able to see the bank balance floating over people's heads was my secret. I'd never told anyone.Sure, initially, I did approach Calvin because of his ten-figure balance. But as we spent m

Calvin noticed me glance at him. He met my eyes with a strange, unreadable look. He said, "Tessa, you've lied to me once. How can I be sure that you're not lying now?"His tone was still icy, but from my understanding of him, I could tell his expression had softened a little. After confessing my lie, I felt a lot lighter inside. Relying on the rapport we had built over the past few days, I lowered my voice and complained, sounding a little aggrieved, "Well, you… you lied to me, too."You told me you were scraping by delivering takeout every day and that you had to rotate the same clothes over and over. But it turns out you were just putting on an act and fooling me from the start."Seeing how I looked both annoyed and helpless, Calvin rubbed his nose, suddenly looking a bit embarrassed. His attitude was no longer so domineering."I was going to explain everything to you properly," he said. "I just didn't expect Yvonne to show up out of nowhere and mess up my plans."The warmth in

Egged on by Yvonne's hysterical accusations, Calvin took her phone and glanced at it. The next second, his brows knit together, and his expression darkened. He fixed his gaze on me and asked icily, "Tessa, do you have anything to say?"His voice sliced through the dead silence, the air around him heavy and oppressive. He gave the evidence in his hand a little wave; his expression was frostier than I'd ever seen it.I'd gotten so used to the Calvin who always joked around with me, the one who never took anything seriously, that seeing him like this made my tongue go stiff and my words trip all over themselves."I… I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pretend to be Yvonne. Could you please let me explain?"I wanted to tell Calvin everything from beginning to end. More than that, I wanted to hurry and explain that, aside from lying about my identity, every single thing I had ever said to him had been true. But Yvonne didn't give me the chance. Before I could say anything else, she cut in, he
