Chapter 6

Author: April Fisher
The private suites at the auction were separated by movable partitions.

Everyone attending was either wealthy or powerful, and a few ambitious social climbers had paid for access, hoping to make connections. The organizers encouraged it, even allowing guests to slide open the partitions if both sides agreed.

After a long silence, someone on the other side knocked on the panel.

Chloe didn’t respond.

Vanessa, however, rose to her feet, unlocked the latch, and slid the divider open just a few inches.

Through the narrow gap, Chloe met Brian’s eyes. His expression was dark, his gaze sharp with irritation.

Chloe lifted an eyebrow, her face calm, as if she were looking at a stranger. She turned to Vanessa instead.

“Sit down. The auction’s about to start.”

Vanessa smirked. “I was just curious to see what kind of garbage some people are so eager to eat.”

She and Chloe had grown up together. Years ago, after Chloe chose to stay in Riverton for Brian, Vanessa had been furious and cut contact. They only reconnected recently, and this was the first time Vanessa had seen Brian in person.

Chloe said nothing. Vanessa’s jab had technically hit her too, but she let it slide.

Brian’s face darkened further. His eyes stayed locked on Chloe as he took a step forward.

Vanessa stepped in front of him, smiling coldly. Her bodyguards, who had been waiting in the shadows, moved instantly to her side.

“This suite is private property,” she said. “Not every piece of trash gets to walk in.”

Brian’s jaw tightened. He glanced past her to where Chloe sat, poised and beautiful under the warm light.

“Chloe,” he said in a low, commanding voice. “Come here.”

Her lips curved slightly. “If I go over there, your pretty little girlfriend might lose her sparkle. I wouldn’t want to ruin your night.”

Candice’s face went white, her body stiff.

Vanessa motioned for the bodyguard to raise the divider, but Brian lifted his hand and blocked it, his expression cold.

The air tightened instantly, charged with tension.

Brian’s expression soured. He glared at Chloe, his voice heavy. “You really not coming?”

It was the tone he used before he lost his temper.

Chloe nodded once. “I’m sure.”

There was a time she would’ve done anything to keep him calm, to avoid another fight. But now, even if he dropped dead in front of her, she wouldn’t blink.

“Mrs. Shaw, we were just joking around,” one of the men tried to smooth things over. “Mr. Shaw’s about to marry you—he’d never—”

Vanessa cut him off sharply. “Shut your filthy mouth. Don’t lump her in with that scumbag. She’s NOT married to him.”

Her voice was loud enough for half the floor to hear. The nearby suites went quiet.

The man’s face froze. He recognized the insignia on the guards beside Vanessa—one of the country’s top private security firms. Hiring them cost seven figures at least.

He suddenly realized Chloe wasn’t just some woman who’d built a company with Brian from scratch. The connections she had now were on a whole other level.

The others, who had been ready to jump in, wisely kept their mouths shut.

Candice’s eyes were red as she stood up, looking as if she’d just suffered the greatest humiliation of her life.

“Mr. Shaw, please don’t argue with Miss Spencer because of me,” she said, her voice trembling. “You’re letting everyone laugh at you. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have come. I’ll leave right now.”

Brian frowned, the tension in his face softening just slightly.

Chloe rose from her seat.

Thinking she would back down for the sake of appearances, Brian straightened up, ready to smooth things over. He assumed she’d help him save face, that she’d never humiliate him in public.

But instead, Chloe walked right up to the partition, slid it shut, and turned the lock with a sharp click.

“Chloe Spencer!”

His furious voice echoed from the other side of the wall.

She didn’t even blink. She sat back down, her expression calm.

Vanessa followed, grinning as she sank into her chair. “Honestly, I thought you might actually go over there.”

Chloe kept her gaze fixed on the auction stage. “Do I look like someone that pathetic to you?”

Vanessa slipped an arm around her shoulders, resting her cheek against Chloe’s. “Not pathetic. Just blind for a few years.”

Chloe gave a small, humorless laugh.

The auction was about to begin, but the noise from the next suite didn’t stop.

Candice’s voice came through, soft and tearful. “It’s my fault. I made Mr. Shaw and Miss Spencer fight. I should go over there and apologize, make it clear that nothing’s going on between us.”

No one else dared to speak.

Brian’s cold voice finally cut through. “Don’t.”

The auction began its opening preview. The sound of Candice quietly sniffling carried faintly through the partition.

Eventually, there was a knock at Brian’s suite.

“Mr. Shaw,” the host’s representative said politely, “some guests have complained about the noise disturbing the auction. Please keep it down. We hope everyone enjoys the evening and finds something they like.”

Brian’s face turned to stone.

Candice stiffened, humiliated. She had already been embarrassed by Chloe, and now even a staff member dared to lecture them.

“There’s noise coming from plenty of other rooms too!” she snapped.

One of the sycophants beside Brian sneered, “Maybe that guest just wants an excuse to get close to Mr. Shaw. We can give him the honor, tell him Mr. Shaw will cover his suite fee if he comes over and apologizes.”

The words drifted through the wall. Chloe frowned in disgust.

Brian stayed silent.

Since Vision Studio had gone public, he had been surrounded by people like that—flatterers, opportunists, men who laughed too loudly at his jokes.

He’d started to believe his own hype. And arrogance always came with a price.

After a few murmured apologies from the organizers, the commotion finally died down.

Brian didn’t cause any further scenes, but he found a new way to provoke her.

Every time Chloe lifted her paddle to bid, his suite immediately followed, raising the price.

Several items she’d wanted ended up in his hands.

He seemed to be enjoying himself, even sending her a message halfway through:

[Brian Shaw]: See something you like? I’ll buy it for you.

[Chloe Spencer]: You just spent a fortune on junk. Not one of those things is worth liking.

[Brian Shaw]: You’re doing this on purpose?

Chloe glanced at her phone, then ignored him and placed another bid.

This time, he didn’t follow. She won the item, a delicate bracelet she planned to give her sister as a gift when she returned to Brookshire.

A new message came in.

[Brian Shaw]: Thought I’d keep bidding, didn’t you?

[Chloe Spencer]: Thanks for sitting this one out. Saved me a lot of money.

He didn’t reply.

But Chloe could already picture his face. Jaw clenched, eyes cold, fuming behind that wall. And for the first time in a long while, she almost smiled.

Nick didn’t make things difficult for her. He took out his phone, typed something, and held the screen toward her.Chloe let out a quiet breath of relief, scanning the QR code. “How much was the coat?” she asked as she waited for him to give her the number. When she looked down at her phone, though, it wasn’t a payment page—it was a Venmo friend request. She blinked, confused for a second, then accepted it anyway. Maybe the amount was too high, so he thought it was necessary to add her first.Across from her, Nick’s long, slender fingers tapped his screen twice, accepting her request.“I’ll transfer the money to you right now,” Chloe said quietly, already pulling up the payment window.Nick put his phone away. “I don’t know the exact price yet. I’ll ask the brand for a quote and let you know.”“Oh.” Chloe nodded, a little embarrassed. He gave her an unreadable look before turning and walking into the apartment with the tiny coat in hand. For a moment, Chloe stood there hesitat

Nick’s coat had gotten soaked that day at the hospital. After being discharged, Chloe had taken it home and washed it by hand. It was still hanging in the laundry room. Now that she had another chance to meet him, the slump she’d been in finally started to fade. She gave herself a silent pep talk, rehearsing what she’d say to convince Nick to buy Vision Studio’s shares. But when she stepped into the laundry room and saw the coat hanging on the rack—shrunken to nearly half its original size—her mind went completely blank.Panicking, Chloe hurried over and grabbed it down, checking the label over and over just to make sure it really was his coat. It was. She’d ruined it.Heart sinking, she quickly pulled out her phone and searched online:“How to fix a shrunken wool coat?”Most of the results were useless product ads. With no reliable solution, she clutched the tiny version of Nick’s coat and drove to the nearest dry cleaner for help. The clerk took one look at the brand tag, ey

Patrick stepped into Nick’s walk-in closet, following Nicole’s instructions to pick out what Nick should wear for tomorrow’s meeting. He searched through every rack and shelf but couldn’t find the black wool coat she had insisted on. Then, a memory hit him. He hesitated for a moment before saying carefully, “Nick, I think that coat’s still with Miss Spencer.”Nick frowned. The thought of Nicole’s temper already gave him a headache. She had a bad habit of tattling to their parents and grandfather whenever he annoyed her. The last time he got on her nerves, she’d complained to their mother, and he’d been forced to go on blind dates for a month straight.“Get it back from her,” he said flatly. After leaving Nick’s penthouse, Chloe drove straight back to her grandmother’s old house. On the way, she called Vanessa and asked her to help find someone willing to buy shares of Vision Studio. She held fifty-one percent of the company, and selling it all in one go wasn’t easy. “I only turned down an arranged engagement with no feelings involved and had one failed relationship,” Chloe said quietly. “That’s not exactly a crime. So why, Mr. Horden, do you insist on holding it against me like I ruined your life?”Her voice was steady but weary, the kind that carried more frustration than weakness. She wasn’t breaking down, just tired of being cornered.Nick said nothing. He stood by the balcony, flicking the crushed cigarette butt into the trash with casual precision.Silence settled between them. After a moment, Chloe realized there was no point in losing her temper with him. He wasn’t someone she could afford to provoke. She took a deep breath, forcing her tone to be calm.“Apologies for bothering you. I’ll take my leave.”She turned to go, her expression faintly despondent.Nick really did look like one of those male leads in a drama, the kind who gets rejected, then rises to power just to crush the woman who walked away. She hadn’t expected that afte

After all, they had gone to the same high school once.Chloe was good at planning and strategy, but negotiating at a business table had never been her strength. Still, she was already here. Walking away now would be pathetic. She sat down on the sofa. The man across from her looked at her with the kind of calm superiority that made her feel like she was being evaluated.Refusing to let herself appear weak, Chloe took a quiet breath, stood up, and met his gaze directly.“Horden Group wants to expand into Riverton. Starting from scratch would take a lot of time. And for someone like you, Mr. Horden, time is money.”Nick didn’t react.Chloe drew in another steady breath. She could make a perfect pitch deck or marketing plan, but face-to-face business talk was another story. Still, she pressed on.“Vision Studio meets all the conditions Horden Group is looking for. It’s the fastest way to enter the market here. I don’t think you’d turn down such a good opportunity over some minor pe

Nick reached out and took the phone from her hand. His long, elegant fingers brushed lightly across her palm, leaving a faint tingling sensation in their wake.He quickly pulled his hand back, his expression calm as he lowered his gaze to the screen. Without a word, he tapped “confirm” beneath the bold red word ‘Defeat’ and exited the game.Chloe pressed her lips together, thinking for a moment before saying quietly, “If you’d like, I could carry you sometime.”Nick raised an eyebrow. “Carry me?”There was a note of disbelief in his tone, his sharp, dark eyes fixed on her as if testing her confidence. His look triggered her competitiveness, and she immediately pulled out her phone.“I’m a great jungler. I used to rank nationally with several heroes.”As she spoke, she unlocked her phone, swiping through the home screen to find the game and prove it. But after scrolling through the apps, she realized the icon was gone. She had deleted it long ago.Nick was still watching her, his
