Chapter 4

Author: suiiu
“Lisa! Who gave you permission to enter the main house? And who gave you permission to touch that necklace?”

I turned and saw Quincy standing behind me with Sophia beside him. His face was dark with anger.

“That belongs to the Bennett family. What right do you have to touch it?”

I glanced at him, keeping my voice calm.

“Must you be so loud? Luca gave it to me.”

“Quincy, don’t speak to Miss Ortiz like that,” Sophia said gently. “But Miss Ortiz, how did you manage to get your hands on this necklace without anyone noticing?”

She edged behind Quincy.

“I don’t mean anything by it. I’m only worried that people might start spreading rumors and accuse you of stealing from the Bennett family.”

Quincy let out a cold laugh.

“What? Do you already think you’re Mrs. Bennett? Are you that eager to flaunt your authority?”

He lunged forward, seized the necklace around my neck, and ripped it off.

I was completely unprepared. The clasp scraped the back of my neck, leaving a red mark.

“You don’t even deserve to touch this necklace. I’ve wanted to ask my brother for it for years so I could give it to Sophia.”

He turned and placed the necklace in Sophia’s hands.

My name was engraved on its clasp. Taking it from me was more than theft. It was an open insult to both Luca and me.

I could not let Sophia keep it.

I rushed forward to take it back, but just as my fingers were about to touch the necklace, Sophia deliberately released her grip.

The black pearls struck the floor.

The clasp snapped, sending pearls scattering in every direction.

Sophia covered her neck and frowned in pain.

“Miss Ortiz, I know you don’t like me. I know you think I’m not worthy of this necklace.”

“But how could you deliberately destroy it? It doesn’t matter that you hurt me, but what if damaging the necklace comes between Quincy and Luca?”

I looked down at the black pearls scattered around my feet.

“Stop pretending. I never touched you. You were the one who let go.”

My voice remained steady, but Quincy refused to let it go.

He pulled Sophia protectively into his arms and glared at me with undisguised hatred.

“You hurt her, and you don’t feel even the slightest remorse. Now you’re lying about it.”

Sophia’s story did not hold up for even a second, yet Quincy believed every word.

“I swear on the honor of the Ortiz family, the necklace really wasn’t—”

“Apologize.”

“Lisa Ortiz, I order you to apologize to Sophia.”

Quincy’s voice carried unmistakable anger.

I refused.

“Are you insane? I didn’t break the necklace, and I’m not apologizing to her.”

Quincy clearly had not expected me to defy him. He stepped closer and clamped a hand around my wrist.

His grip made me wince. I struggled to pull free, but he was far stronger than I was.

“Don’t forget that today is our engagement party,” he said with complete confidence. “If the groom refuses to appear, the Ortiz family will become the laughingstock of Sicily.”

He was certain I would do what I had always done—that I would endure anything for a moment of his attention.

I met his gaze and enunciated every word.

“I already told you. You are not the man I’m going to marry. Don’t flatter yourself.”

The confidence on Quincy’s face vanished.

His mouth opened, but no words came out.

Then the sound of strings drifted from the hall, and a smug smile returned to his face.

“You’re still trying to fool me? All of the Ortiz family’s business partners are here. If this isn’t an engagement party, then what is it?”

He stepped closer and lowered his voice, as though he were speaking to me while trying to convince himself.

“Let’s see how you plan to salvage this without me.”

“I know you’re using the necklace to get my attention. Too bad. It didn’t work.”

Before Quincy could finish, a gunshot cracked through the hall.

The bullet struck the floor beside his feet.

Luca stepped through the side door, his pistol still raised.

“Quincy, who gave you permission to address my fiancée that way?”

The engagement reception did not proceed as planned. In the end, it became the setting for a family reckoning.Luca cared deeply about what had happened. He bought me all kinds of expensive gifts as an apology and even said that he wanted to hold a grand wedding ceremony to make up for it.“I don’t need a grand wedding. As long as you are always by my side, that is enough. I love you, Luca.”“I love you too.”After losing Quincy’s protection, Sophia became a target because she had stolen the Bennett family’s finances and confidential information. She wanted to return to Quincy, but by that point, Quincy hated her so much that he wanted to kill her with his own hands. With no one else to rely on, she had no choice but to seek out the man who had originally asked her to act as a connection for passing information. At first, that man was willing to take her in, but it did not take long before he revealed his true nature. Not only did he restrict her freedom, but he also treated her like a

As soon as Sophia said that, Quincy immediately turned to look at me.He thought that, just like before, I would lose my temper because of Sophia’s words. But the expression on my face remained calm. I did not take anything Sophia said seriously.Quincy’s fingers slowly tightened at his side.In the past, whenever any woman came close to him, I would always stand beside him possessively and declare my place, or use the Ortiz family’s influence to make those women leave. But now, even when Sophia was openly expressing her feelings toward him, I did not even move my eyebrows.Had I really stopped caring about him? The thought appeared in Quincy’s mind, and his chest suddenly tightened. Impossible.“She loved me for ten years. How could she suddenly stop loving me? She must only be hiding her feelings because of the cruel things I said to her in the past.”Quincy continued deceiving himself and looked back toward Sophia. This time, he had to explain everything clearly. He could not allow

It was Sophia. When she saw Quincy being restrained by the bodyguards, her first thought was that the family was forcing him to marry me.Thinking about the Bennett family’s enormous power, and remembering how she had fought her way up from the slums to obtain everything she had today, Sophia clenched her teeth. A trace of determination flashed in her eyes. She could not lose Quincy, and she absolutely could not return to the life she had left behind. No matter what happened, today she had to completely bind herself to him.Sophia walked straight toward the consigliere and pleaded.“I know my identity is not worthy, but Quincy and I truly love each other.”“Sir, please don’t force him to marry a woman he does not love.”“True love is not a crime. Please let us be together.”As soon as she said this, the surrounding guests looked at her with undisguised contempt.A woman from the slums barging into a Mafia family’s engagement reception and declaring that true love was above everything e

Quincy’s eyes turned red.“Lisa, you actually pushed me?”“Before, no matter what anyone said, you always stood by my side.”I looked at him and found the whole thing absurd. In the past, my eyes and my heart had been filled with him, yet he had never even been willing to look at me properly. He had even locked me inside the freezer to punish me because of Sophia. Now that I only had hatred left for him, he was the one who began to feel wronged.I looked at him and said clearly, “Please leave the reception hall.”Quincy’s expression became complicated, with pain and anger mixed together as he gritted his teeth.“The person you loved was obviously me. Why did you choose Luca?”“What did he use to force you? Tell me, and I will do everything I can to solve it for you. Whatever he can do, I can do too.”Seeing that there was still a trace of hope in his eyes, I answered coldly.“Because I love him, and that is why I am willing to marry him. There is no other reason.”“You’re lying!” Quinc

Worried that Quincy might cause trouble and ruin our engagement reception, I warned Luca in advance.Luca told me not to worry and said he had already asked the family consigliere to find an excuse to keep Quincy away.Only after I watched the consigliere lead him away did I finally feel somewhat relieved. However, shortly after the engagement reception began, while I was standing beside Luca with my arm linked through his as we spoke with the guests, Quincy still managed to burst into the hall.Ignoring the consigliere’s attempts to stop him, he strode straight onto the stage and snatched the microphone.Facing the guests below, Quincy announced loudly, “Everyone, I’m afraid you’ve all made this trip for nothing today. This engagement reception will lead nowhere, because I will never acknowledge any engagement between Lisa and me.”“I only agreed to marry her in the first place because of the pact between our families.”“But now I have seen this woman for who she really is. She is sel

“Your fiancée? Luca, what are you talking about?”“You must be insane! How could she possibly become your wife?”Quincy stared at Luca’s face, trying to find any trace that he was joking. Then his gaze moved downward and landed on Luca’s hand resting around my waist. His expression immediately darkened.“Is it true? When did the two of you get together?”Luca did not answer.Instead, he took a gold-embossed invitation from the servant beside him and threw it directly at Quincy.“Tonight is my engagement reception with Lisa. You are my brother, so you must attend.”Quincy caught the invitation and stared at the signatures of Luca and me.After a few seconds of shock, he suddenly laughed.“Lisa, you really went to a lot of trouble to bring my brother back from Palermo, didn’t you?”“Luca, what did she offer you? Information from the Ortiz family’s intelligence network? Or a share of those casinos?”“And you, Lisa, do you really think that using my brother to provoke me will make me turn
