Chapter 3

Author: Spherical
The fury simmering in my chest threatened to boil over. I couldn't leave just like that. I couldn't allow myself to suffer such humiliation for no reason. I had to vent my frustration and anger that day, no matter what!

Tossing my bag on the couch, I sat back down with a terrifyingly icy look in my eyes.

"Fine then! Two can play at this game. Since you're so adamant about settling scores, let's list everything your son has ever spent on me and I on him. After we've transferred the money, we no longer owe each other anything, and there will be nothing tying us together anymore."

Anthony was momentarily surprised, but then he huffed and nodded. "Alright! Calculate away!"

While looking through the bills, all the memories that I had deliberately romanticized flashed through my mind's eye. Every single scene was like another slap to the face for me.

The most expensive gift Anthony had ever given me was a lipstick that cost around 20 dollars, and he had bought it only because it was on sale. The rest of his gifts were cheap accessories that cost a few dollars at most, and a shawl made from an automatic knitting machine.

Every time I received his presents, I would pretend to be surprised and delighted. I would hug him and say, "Aww, that's so thoughtful of you, babe. I really like it."

In stark contrast, the phone, watches, shoes, and clothes I gave him were all branded luxury items.

When the seasons changed, and he had no money to afford new clothing, I immediately transferred some money to him. When his family ran into some problems, I would discreetly aid them financially. Even the gifts he had brought to my house last time had been mostly prepared by me beforehand.

"In our three years together, your son spent a total of 327 dollars on me, while I spent 28,500 on him. I can transfer him 400 dollars right away. Think of the extra as me paying him a breakup fee."

Anthony’s face immediately flushed bright red with embarrassment and anger. He raised his volume and demanded, "What do you mean by this? Are you trying to humiliate me? Our family might be poor, but we have dignity!"

I scoffed, my eyes filled with nothing but disdain. "How are you feeling so justified when you're poor? You were the ones who insisted on settling the scores, but now that the actual numbers have come out, you can't accept it?

"25 thousand. I won't ask for the full amount—just that. Transfer it to me, and I'll leave immediately. Staying even a second longer here is making me sick."

Upon hearing this, Andrew, who had remained silent so far, suddenly took a step forward. In the next second, a sharp pain bloomed across my cheek.

"You bitch, how dare you intimidate us like that! Why have I never seen you buy such expensive things for my son? Who's to say that you didn't make all that up to trick us?

"Besides, you're just a regular salaried employee, so how could you possibly have that much money? Maybe you only earned that by selling your body! If my son gets an STD because of you, then not even 250 thousand dollars will be enough! Yet, you have the audacity to demand that we pay you instead?"

Half of my face had gone numb and was throbbing fiercely.

I was utterly stunned at the blow, and before I could stop them, tears welled in my eyes.

Even my own parents had never raised their hands against me, yet I had suffered such humiliation here that day.

As the saying went, a rotten place bred rotten people. Not once had they thought that I was dirty when they happily spent my money, but now that I wanted them to pay me back, they were accusing me of obtaining that money through improper means?

Pinning Anthony with a frosty stare, I shoved down the burning rage in me and said, "Go on, tell them. Did I actually buy you all those things or not?"

Anthony pointedly avoided my gaze, hemming and hawing for a moment before finally replying in a small voice, "Well… You did buy those things for me, but some of them look pretty fake, so maybe they're counterfeit products. Demanding 25 thousand dollars is way too much…"

His words thoroughly shattered what little reason I had left. If not for my upbringing, I was genuinely tempted to storm over and give each of them a hard slap.

I knew that I would lose all control if I stayed any longer, so I took a deep breath, grabbed my bag, and headed for the front door.

"That 25 thousand dollars had better be in my account by tomorrow. If not, then I'll see you in court."

Upon returning home, I couldn't hold back any longer and revealed all that I had gone through at the Yarrow residence to my parents, my eyes red-rimmed.

Dad was so infuriated that he slammed a hand on the table.

"Those ingrates! How dare they bully my daughter! I'm going to teach that family a lesson!"

Mom was also shaking with rage, though she hugged me tightly while tears streamed down her cheeks.

Cocooned in her warm embrace, I couldn't stop the tears from spilling.

For three years, I had given everything I had to this relationship, even spending more than 25 thousand dollars on Anthony. I had refused a bride price and prepared a million-dollar wedding gift, yet all it got me in the end was an obedience test and a bout of humiliation.

As time went by, Joana's resentment grew. She was convinced that we definitely had something valuable hidden away because we were so wealthy, and she kept looking for opportunities to steal something to make up for her losses. One day, I had to leave the house to run an errand. She seized the chance to sneak into my upstairs study and used a tall stool to reach the safe I kept high up on a shelf. However, she lost her balance, and her body tipped to the side before she fell off the stool.By the time I returned home, the ambulance had already arrived. The doctor informed us that she had broken her spine and would forever be paralyzed from the waist down.Anthony, Andrew, and Megan charged at me in a crazed rage. Jabbing a finger at me, Anthony screamed, "This is all your fault! You forced my mom to be your housekeeper, so you have to compensate us for the medical expenses and emotional damages! 100 thousand dollars, and not a single cent less!"I simply shot them an indifferent s

My heart tightened with emotion as Mom shielded me behind her.Subsequently, I said to Anthony in a frosty tone, "Stop hiding behind 'love' as an excuse for your actions! Where was that love when you and your family worked together to set me up? Now that you're being held responsible for your crimes, you suddenly remember that we were in a relationship?"I didn't want to waste any more time on them. All I wanted was for this farce to end quickly."You want to settle this privately? Sure. First, return that 25 thousand dollars to me immediately. Second, publicly apologize to me and clear up all the malicious rumors you spread about me. Third, assume liability for your false accusations, malicious framing, and incitement of trouble."When Joana heard that I expected them to both pay up and take responsibility for their crimes, she immediately raged, "Are you trying to kill us? It's just a minor conflict between two lovers! Do you really have to be so ruthless?"The police officer fr

Megan said, "Mom is right! That's exactly how you should put her in her place! Let's see if she's still so arrogant after this!"Every single word out of their mouths revealed their blatant scheming and rotten character. The hall fell silent for a brief moment before chaos erupted."How could Andrew's family do something so dirty? That's just so messed up!""They deliberately planted the blame on her and even ruined her reputation! Are they even human?""How terrifying of them! Not only did they trick her into coming to this engagement party, but they even plotted so many things behind her back!"Every single one of the Yarrows had gone pale and could hardly stand steady on their feet."Y-You set us up!"Bringing the microphone to my mouth, I said coldly, "Everyone, you've heard it for yourselves. This is the Yarrow family's true colors. Besides that, I was completely unaware of today's engagement party. It was Anthony who tricked me into coming here by saying he wanted to retu

"Hurry up, Mandy! Everyone is waiting for you!"I gazed at the pretentious faces of the Yarrow family and scoffed silently.Since they were determined to be so ruthless, they couldn't blame me for showing them no mercy. After gathering myself, I put on a docile and compliant look. Nodding gently, I replied, "Alright, I understand. I'll… do as you all say today."Anthony and Joana were immediately delighted."I knew you were an understanding woman!"The instant we sat, they were back to their previous arrogant selves as they began yet another obedience test in the presence of their relatives.Joana leaned back in her chair and stuck her nose in the air proudly. "Mandy, since you've gotten engaged to Tony, that means that we've accepted you as our daughter-in-law. Now, go and toast all of the relatives one by one, and remember to mind your manners."Picking up my wine glass, I quietly did as ordered, toasting everyone individually.Eager to add fuel to the fire, Megan suggested,

I flung Joana's hand away from me as anger and embarrassment surged through me. When I spoke, even my voice shook."Who told you that? What nonsense are you spouting?"Nonetheless, Joanna clung to my hand tightly, a self-assured smile on her lips."Feeling shy, are we? Tony told me that when you two went on that holiday a while back, it was practically a honeymoon trip. Isn't marriage the logical next step?"That had me stunned for a moment before I snapped out of it and retorted loudly, "Holiday? That was a business trip! He went with me to work, and we clearly slept in two different rooms!"Since I was young, my parents taught me to save the most precious moment for my wedding night. Hence, in my three years with Anthony, we had never gone that far, despite whatever feelings we had.Snapping my head around to stare at Anthony with a frosty gaze, I growled, "You told your mom that?"Anthony couldn't meet my eyes as he fumbled over his words, his voice small. "We've been togethe

Joana was briefly surprised, but then she let out a scoff and uttered disdainfully, "Wow, what a great act you're putting on! Who would've thought that you would purposely hire an actor to pretend to be your lawyer in your bid to marry into our family? You sure spared no expense!"Well, too bad for you! We already gave you an opportunity to retake the test, but you didn't appreciate it! This method won't work on us anymore! We have our pride too, so either you pay the compensation, or I send you to prison!"She remained as mean as ever, not at all believing that the lawyer was speaking the truth. The lawyer took a step forward and calmly looked at the lead officer. "Sir, I'm Ms. Amanda Lance's lawyer. With my client's wealth, there's no motive for theft at all. I request that the gold bangle be sent to the lab to check for fingerprints. Whether her fingerprints are on it or not can easily be verified."The police officer nodded and gestured for the bangle to be placed in a sealed e
