Chapter 2

Author: Dory Cat
The kitchen lady stirred the pot of soup as she chatted with me.

“Thanks, ma’am,” I said with a smile.

I glanced at the steaming pot of soup, its rich aroma filling the kitchen, and the corners of my lips curled upward.

When no one was looking, I poured the bottle of water into the pot.

Afterward, I immediately got back to work at the cafeteria.

The cafeteria was packed at lunchtime. Students and faculty came and went nonstop, keeping me busy until noon.

When I pushed open the dorm room door, I immediately spotted Mia sitting at her desk.

Her eyes locked onto me, filled with anticipation, as if she had been waiting for me for a long time.

Before I could even sit down, Mia sprang to her feet and hurried over to me. She was holding a neatly packaged loaf of toast, wearing a warm and earnest smile.

“Claire, you must be exhausted after working all morning. You’re probably hungry too, right? I just bought this bread. Have some to hold you over.”

The next second, I heard her thoughts again.

[I wonder if she drank the water. If she didn’t, I need to get her to eat something else, just to be safe!]

[And maybe I can transfer not only her scholarship money, but also what she earned from her part-time job today. Even a little extra is better than nothing!]

Hearing her greedy calculations, anger surged through my chest.

Stealing my scholarship money was bad enough, but she was even eyeing the money I had worked so hard to earn.

I suppressed my anger, though my voice came out colder than before.

“No, thanks. I already ate the staff meal at the cafeteria. I’m not hungry at all.”

Mia’s hand froze in midair. The smile on her face immediately faltered, and she reluctantly pulled the bread back.

She silently returned to her desk, and the atmosphere in the room instantly became awkward.

Our other roommate, Rachel Sinclair, had always thought I was antisocial and seemed to dislike me no matter what I did.

Now, she immediately seized the opportunity to defend Mia, her voice filled with accusation and displeasure.

“Claire, don’t you think that was a little rude?

“Mia was just being nice. She brought you water and bread because she was worried about how hard you’ve been working. How can you be so ungrateful?”

I looked up at Rachel, my expression calm and straightforward.

“I’m not being ungrateful. I already thanked her.

“Besides, I’ve eaten and I’m not hungry. What’s wrong with turning down food I don’t need?”

Mia sat nearby, and I could hear every frustrated thought running through her mind.

[Claire is such a pain! She refuses everything. She won’t eat or drink anything!]

[If I’d known she’d be this difficult, I never would have chosen her as my test subject. What a waste of my time!]

Rachel still refused to let it go. She crossed her arms and scoffed.

“You’re just pretending to be above everyone else! You never want to hang out with us, and you think you’re better than us just because your grades are good.

“And now you’re even too good to accept someone’s kindness?”

She paused, eyeing me suspiciously.

“You didn’t secretly throw away the water Mia gave you, did you?”

I met her gaze directly, my expression clear and composed.

“Don’t make assumptions about other people, and don’t label them however you please. Besides, I already drank the water.”

The moment I said that, the disappointment on Mia’s face vanished.

Her eyes lit up instantly.

The corners of her lips curled upward, and she could barely contain her smile.

She quickly suppressed the wild excitement in her eyes and put on a friendly expression, stepping in to smooth things over.

“Okay, okay. Rachel, don’t be so hard on Claire. I’m sure she didn’t mean anything by it. She probably really wasn’t hungry. We’re roommates. There’s no reason to let something this small ruin our relationship.”

[Yes! It worked! She drank the water! That five thousand dollars will be mine soon!]

[Once I get the money, I’ll buy the dress first. Then I’ll give the other two girls some snacks and drinks and transfer all their spending money too!]

[A few more transfers, and I can pick up some new designer bags. Perfect!]

I quietly watched her fake, friendly expression and listened to her increasingly greedy plans.

There was nothing left in my heart but coldness.

He looked at the transcript of my final grades and the certificates I had earned, his eyes filled with approval.“I knew I hadn’t been wrong about you. All those years of hard work have finally paid off.”I stood straight and thanked him sincerely.“I owe it all to your support and guidance, Mr. Carter. Without your help, I wouldn’t have been able to complete my studies without worrying about money or have the opportunities I have today.”“Helping someone who deserves it is never a waste.” Mr. Carter smiled faintly. “Work hard and stay grounded. The company will give you plenty of room to grow.”After joining Carter Industries, I continued working with the same diligence and dedication I had shown in college.I worked hard to improve my skills and gain experience. Before long, I had established myself in my position and earned the recognition of my senior colleagues and supervisors. On weekends, I continued visiting the hospital to care for Grandma, who had entered the final sta

Grandma listened quietly until I finished explaining everything. Tears instantly welled up in her cloudy eyes. She raised a hand and gently wiped the corners of her eyes, her voice thick with emotion.“Thank God things are finally looking up. My sweet Claire has always been such a good girl. While other children were busy playing and being spoiled, you were already learning to save money and endure hardships. You’ve carried every burden on your own from such a young age.“I was always afraid that I was holding you back, that my medical expenses would interfere with your studies. I could barely sleep at night because I felt so guilty.”Seeing her reddened eyes, my heart ached. I quickly reassured her.“Grandma, that’s all in the past now. From now on, just focus on getting better and taking care of yourself. You don’t have to worry about anything else.“I don’t have to cram multiple part-time jobs into my free time anymore. I can focus on my classes and prepare properly for my exa

My fingers paused, but I said nothing.Mr. Carter continued.“I’ve reviewed your academic records and your performance at the university. You’re hardworking, responsible, and mature. Even when you were facing difficult circumstances, you never complained or let resentment consume you. Even when your roommate deliberately tried to take advantage of you, you remained true to yourself and handled everything calmly and rationally.“I’ve been an entrepreneur for many years, and young people like you are exactly the kind I admire most.”He paused before looking at me seriously.“Claire, I’ve decided to personally sponsor your education for the rest of your time at the university.”I looked up in shock.Mr. Carter smiled and explained.“I’ll personally cover all of your grandmother’s future hospital bills, treatment costs, rehabilitation expenses, and medication until she makes a full recovery.“On top of that, I’ll cover your tuition, housing, and living expenses for the rest of you

“Turns out Claire has been working part-time all this time. Her financial aid was supposed to cover her grandmother’s medical treatment. She’s really been through a lot.”“Mia is seriously heartless! She actually tried to steal her roommate’s medical money. How could someone be that cruel?”“She always acted so sweet and kind, but she was scheming behind everyone’s backs. You really can’t judge a person by appearances.”When I returned to the dorm, the atmosphere was unusually quiet. My two other roommates were sitting at their desks. When they saw me come in, their faces were filled with guilt and awkwardness.Rachel was the first to stand. She walked over to me, her voice sincere and apologetic.“Claire, I’m sorry.”I looked at her without saying anything.Rachel lowered her head, her face filled with regret.“I was wrong this morning. I defended Mia without knowing the truth and accused you of being ungrateful and stuck-up. I judged you too quickly without knowing what kind

The dorm group chat and class group chat were still buzzing when Rachel took the initiative to speak up. Every word was clearly meant to distance herself from Mia and expose her true nature.“I always thought Mia had been getting way too obsessed with showing off lately. She was constantly comparing designer brands and spending money as if it grew on trees. I can’t believe I was stupid enough to defend her!“She’d been deliberately trying to win everyone over lately, constantly giving people snacks and drinks. Turns out she wasn’t being kind at all. She had an ulterior motive!“Claire has it so bad! Her financial aid was supposed to pay for her grandmother’s medical treatment, and her own roommate tried to steal it from her. Who wouldn’t be heartbroken over something like that?”In an instant, everyone saw through Mia’s sweet and gentle facade. The carefully cultivated friendships and kind-girl image she had spent so long building completely collapsed. At five that afternoon, the

“Earlier today, Mia Parker deliberately left the bottle of water on my desk and repeatedly urged me to drink it.“After I came back from my shift, she offered me the bread and kept insisting that I eat.“I thought her behavior was unusually enthusiastic, but I didn’t think much of it. I politely refused the bread and put the water in my backpack.”The moment I finished speaking, Mia’s agitated and disbelieving thoughts rang clearly in my ears.[What the hell is Claire trying to do? Why does she have to say all that?!][I only gave the water to her! By all accounts, only her money should have been transferred. So why is everyone’s money flooding into my account?][Does she already know about my transfer system? Did she do this on purpose? No! That’s impossible! How could she possibly know about something like this?!]My fingers curled slightly at my sides, but my expression remained calm. I didn’t let anything show.Of course, I wasn’t going to expose everything myself.Mia had
