Chapter 3

Author: Dory Cat
After the brief lunch break, I gathered my things and headed back to the campus cafeteria to help out.

The morning portion of the alumni event had already wrapped up, and the university administrators, prominent business leaders, and distinguished alumni who had been invited were all making their way to the cafeteria for lunch.

The cafeteria was packed and buzzing with activity.

High-profile guests, along with countless students and faculty members, had attended the event. The enormous dining hall was packed, with everyone carrying trays and lining up for food and soup. The atmosphere was lively and chaotic.

During a brief lull in my work, I quietly opened my mobile banking app.

My balance was empty.

Just as I expected.

It had worked.

I suppressed every emotion rising inside me and continued serving food and soup to the university administrators, alumni, and students as calmly as ever.

By two in the afternoon, the lunch rush had gradually died down. Everyone began making their way to the school’s main auditorium for a guest speech by a distinguished alumnus.

I changed out of my cafeteria uniform and followed the crowd into the auditorium. Mia and Rachel were seated not far from me.

Halfway through the speech, the alumnus onstage was speaking confidently while the audience listened attentively.

Then, several hushed voices suddenly broke the silence.

“That’s strange. Why can’t I make any payments? Something I ordered online last week arrived today, but my account says I don’t have enough money.”

A girl in the row ahead lowered her voice as she stared at her phone in confusion.

The person beside her immediately chimed in, her voice filled with panic.

“Me too! My parents transferred two hundred dollars to me for living expenses yesterday. I just tried to order a drink, and there’s not a single cent left in my bank account! What happened?”

More and more confused whispers began spreading throughout the auditorium.

Then, a sharply dressed businessman seated in the VIP section suddenly shot to his feet.

He gripped his phone tightly, his face turning deathly pale.

His trembling voice rang clearly through the microphone, instantly silencing the entire auditorium.

“How is this possible...? You’re telling me every cent in my account disappeared in an instant?”

His words struck the room like a thunderclap.

Everyone stared in shock.

After a brief moment of stunned silence, the auditorium erupted into chaos.

Shouts of panic and frantic questions echoed from every direction.

“I just checked! My tuition money is gone too! I worked part-time all semester to save that money!”

“My living expenses are gone too!”

It wasn’t just the students.

Several faculty members hurriedly checked their phones as well, their faces turning grim.

“My salary was deposited this month, and it’s all gone!”

One professor’s voice trembled as she stared at her screen in disbelief.

Several university administrators immediately pulled out their phones and checked their accounts.

Their expressions grew increasingly serious, their brows furrowing deeply.

“What’s going on? There were hundreds of thousands of dollars in the university’s event fund. That’s gone too!”

Panic swept through the entire auditorium.

The orderly guest lecture descended into complete chaos.

I sat quietly among the crowd and glanced sideways at Mia.

When my scholarship money had first arrived, she had struggled to hide her smile. Her eyes had been filled with excitement at the thought of getting her hands on my money.

But when she realized that the balance in her own account was skyrocketing, with money pouring into it from countless different accounts, the smile slowly disappeared from her face.

Her complexion turned pale before my eyes.

[What’s happening? Why is there so much money?]

[Did all the money that disappeared from their accounts get transferred into mine?]

Mia turned toward me in disbelief, panic written all over her face.

I smiled at her.

Just as the chaos in the auditorium reached its peak, the sharp sound of police sirens came from outside.

He looked at the transcript of my final grades and the certificates I had earned, his eyes filled with approval.“I knew I hadn’t been wrong about you. All those years of hard work have finally paid off.”I stood straight and thanked him sincerely.“I owe it all to your support and guidance, Mr. Carter. Without your help, I wouldn’t have been able to complete my studies without worrying about money or have the opportunities I have today.”“Helping someone who deserves it is never a waste.” Mr. Carter smiled faintly. “Work hard and stay grounded. The company will give you plenty of room to grow.”After joining Carter Industries, I continued working with the same diligence and dedication I had shown in college.I worked hard to improve my skills and gain experience. Before long, I had established myself in my position and earned the recognition of my senior colleagues and supervisors. On weekends, I continued visiting the hospital to care for Grandma, who had entered the final sta

Grandma listened quietly until I finished explaining everything. Tears instantly welled up in her cloudy eyes. She raised a hand and gently wiped the corners of her eyes, her voice thick with emotion.“Thank God things are finally looking up. My sweet Claire has always been such a good girl. While other children were busy playing and being spoiled, you were already learning to save money and endure hardships. You’ve carried every burden on your own from such a young age.“I was always afraid that I was holding you back, that my medical expenses would interfere with your studies. I could barely sleep at night because I felt so guilty.”Seeing her reddened eyes, my heart ached. I quickly reassured her.“Grandma, that’s all in the past now. From now on, just focus on getting better and taking care of yourself. You don’t have to worry about anything else.“I don’t have to cram multiple part-time jobs into my free time anymore. I can focus on my classes and prepare properly for my exa

My fingers paused, but I said nothing.Mr. Carter continued.“I’ve reviewed your academic records and your performance at the university. You’re hardworking, responsible, and mature. Even when you were facing difficult circumstances, you never complained or let resentment consume you. Even when your roommate deliberately tried to take advantage of you, you remained true to yourself and handled everything calmly and rationally.“I’ve been an entrepreneur for many years, and young people like you are exactly the kind I admire most.”He paused before looking at me seriously.“Claire, I’ve decided to personally sponsor your education for the rest of your time at the university.”I looked up in shock.Mr. Carter smiled and explained.“I’ll personally cover all of your grandmother’s future hospital bills, treatment costs, rehabilitation expenses, and medication until she makes a full recovery.“On top of that, I’ll cover your tuition, housing, and living expenses for the rest of you

“Turns out Claire has been working part-time all this time. Her financial aid was supposed to cover her grandmother’s medical treatment. She’s really been through a lot.”“Mia is seriously heartless! She actually tried to steal her roommate’s medical money. How could someone be that cruel?”“She always acted so sweet and kind, but she was scheming behind everyone’s backs. You really can’t judge a person by appearances.”When I returned to the dorm, the atmosphere was unusually quiet. My two other roommates were sitting at their desks. When they saw me come in, their faces were filled with guilt and awkwardness.Rachel was the first to stand. She walked over to me, her voice sincere and apologetic.“Claire, I’m sorry.”I looked at her without saying anything.Rachel lowered her head, her face filled with regret.“I was wrong this morning. I defended Mia without knowing the truth and accused you of being ungrateful and stuck-up. I judged you too quickly without knowing what kind

The dorm group chat and class group chat were still buzzing when Rachel took the initiative to speak up. Every word was clearly meant to distance herself from Mia and expose her true nature.“I always thought Mia had been getting way too obsessed with showing off lately. She was constantly comparing designer brands and spending money as if it grew on trees. I can’t believe I was stupid enough to defend her!“She’d been deliberately trying to win everyone over lately, constantly giving people snacks and drinks. Turns out she wasn’t being kind at all. She had an ulterior motive!“Claire has it so bad! Her financial aid was supposed to pay for her grandmother’s medical treatment, and her own roommate tried to steal it from her. Who wouldn’t be heartbroken over something like that?”In an instant, everyone saw through Mia’s sweet and gentle facade. The carefully cultivated friendships and kind-girl image she had spent so long building completely collapsed. At five that afternoon, the

“Earlier today, Mia Parker deliberately left the bottle of water on my desk and repeatedly urged me to drink it.“After I came back from my shift, she offered me the bread and kept insisting that I eat.“I thought her behavior was unusually enthusiastic, but I didn’t think much of it. I politely refused the bread and put the water in my backpack.”The moment I finished speaking, Mia’s agitated and disbelieving thoughts rang clearly in my ears.[What the hell is Claire trying to do? Why does she have to say all that?!][I only gave the water to her! By all accounts, only her money should have been transferred. So why is everyone’s money flooding into my account?][Does she already know about my transfer system? Did she do this on purpose? No! That’s impossible! How could she possibly know about something like this?!]My fingers curled slightly at my sides, but my expression remained calm. I didn’t let anything show.Of course, I wasn’t going to expose everything myself.Mia had
