Liam's POV

Helena does not say anything in the elevator.

She waits until we are in the car, until the driver has pulled away from the Bellamy Inc building and Paris is moving past the windows, and then she closes her folder and looks at me.

"What was that?"

"What was what?"

"The last question. At the end. After everything was wrapped up." She holds my gaze. "That question was not about the partnership."

I look out the window.

"No. It wasn't."

She waits for more.

I do not give her more, and Helen

Emma’s POVI arrive at the office the next morning under a sky the color of wet slate.Noémie is already at her desk, her keyboard clicking in a rapid, defensive rhythm that tells me she has been sorting through a crisis since she walked in. She looks up when the elevator doors open, her eyes tight, her nod brief."Bertrand is in your office," she says. Her voice is low, barely carrying past the reception desk. "The corporate mail courier arrived thirty minutes before the building opened. Bertrand told me to clear your schedule for the entire morning."I do not ask what came in the mail. I pull my coat off, drape it over my arm, and walk straight to my office.Bertrand is standing by the tall window overlooking the street, his hands clasped behind his back. When the door clicks shut, he turns slowly. He has a thick leather folio in his hand, and his face looks exhausted, the lines around his eyes carved deep by a night of bad news.

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER SIXTY SIX: The Patriarch

Liam’s POVThe double doors of the private dining salon at Le Meurice swing open without a sound. My father is sitting at the head of a mahogany table laid for four. He does not look up when my heels hit the parquet floor. He is cutting a slice of pear with a silver fruit knife, his movements precise, slow, and completely devoid of wasted energy.Arthur Carson looks exactly as he did when he forced me into an arranged marriage four years ago.His silver hair is cropped close to his skull. His bespoke charcoal suit fits his broad shoulders without a single wrinkle. At sixty-eight, he still carries himself with the brutal physical authority of a man who spent five decades bending global shipping routes and sovereign funds to his will."You took twenty minutes to cross the river, Liam," my father says, setting the knife on the bone china plate with a quiet click. "Traffic on the Right Bank is never an acceptable excuse for being late to a family meeting."I do not sit down. I stop at the

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER SIXTY FIVE: The Deadbolts

Emma’s POVThe small cardboard box sits on the leather seat between Julian and me, humming with the steady vibration of the car.Inside are four master key blanks and one brass key retrieved from a dirty puddle on Rue de Grenelle. They feel heavier than metal. They feel like the physical proof of how fragile the walls around my children have become.Henri drives with both hands fixed at ten and two, his eyes constantly checking the rearview mirror. He does not ask questions. He takes the turns smoothly, avoiding the major boulevards, steering us back to Rue de Verneuil through a maze of quiet residential alleys.Julian does not speak either. His hand rests flat on his knee, two inches from mine, close enough that I feel the heat radiating through his trousers. He gives me the silence because he knows my head is loud enough on its own.My chest feels hollow, like something has been scooped out from behind my ribs and replaced with cold air.I keep seeing Liam standing on the wet paveme

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER SIXTY FOUR: The Void

Liam’s POVThe red taillights of Henri’s car disappear around the corner of Rue de Grenelle, their reflection bleeding into the wet asphalt like fresh ink. The exhaust mists in the cold air, a brief, pale cloud that hangs over the cobblestones for three seconds before the wind sweeps it away.I am still standing in front of the locksmith’s shop. The rain is starting again, thin and needle-sharp, tapping against the shoulders of my coat. I do not pull my collar up. I do not move. My hands are still in my pockets, my fingers curled into tight, rigid fists against the lining.Marcus walks up beside me. He is holding a black umbrella, tilting it slightly to shield me from the drizzle, his face completely expressionless. He does not ask if I am alright. He does not offer a glass of water or a seat in the car. Marcus has been with me long enough to know when the silence in my chest is too heavy for him to disturb."The car is at the corner, sir," Marcus says quietly."Did she look back?" I

Emma's POVThe words hang in the grey air between us, cold and sharp. The nursery window. My hand does not shake. I do not let it. But the stone pavement beneath my boots feels suddenly unstable, as if the ground itself is shifting. In my mind, I see the small white frame of the window at the end of the hall... the one that looks out over the quiet courtyard... the one where Willa stands in her pajamas to watch the rain.I see a hand reaching through the glass.I see the rabbit falling to the floor.A wave of heat rushes up my neck, hot and violent, followed immediately by a chill that makes the small hairs on my arms stand up under my coat.Beside me, Julian moves. He does not yell. He does not take his hands out of his pockets. He simply takes one step forward, placing his body slightly in front of mine, cutting off Talia’s view of my face. His shoulders are broad, his dark wool coat a solid wall between my panic and her smile."Julian," I say, my voice barely louder than the wind. "

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER SIXTY TWO: The Key

Liam's POVTalia's finger stays raised for three seconds. She is pointing directly at the window... directly at us. Her sunglasses reflect the grey sky, and her mouth is set in a thin, hard line that I recognize from a dozen dinner parties in Los Angeles, the expression she wore right before she dismantled someone's reputation over dessert. Then she lowers her hand. She picks up the leather travel bag from the balcony railing. She turns around and walks back inside the flat, and the green shutters swing closed behind her with a sharp, wooden crack that echoes across the narrow street.Emma lowers the binoculars. Her face is completely still, but her breathing has changed, short and controlled through her nose."She knows we are here," Julian says. He has not moved from the window. His hand is flat against the glass, his body angled slightly in front of Emma."She has known since we walked in," Emma says. "She has been watching this building
