Chapter 3

Author: 九斗
After the burial, I did not let Alex touch my son's urn.

I had Nicholas carry it. We went straight to the hillside house my son had loved most.

Alex was waiting at the gates with a group of people, his eyes bloodshot.

"Olivia, give Eric to me! This was his favorite place. Are you determined to deny him peace even in death?"

I looked at him coldly.

"This house is in my name. I decide who gets to live here. As for his ashes, I'm his mother. The decision is mine."

That afternoon, I had my son's room cleared out and every trophy, photograph, and piece of clothing boxed up and thrown into a garbage truck.

Nicholas stood in the doorway holding the urn, pale and uneasy.

"Mrs. Thomas... this... this is Eric's home. I can't..."

"This isn't Eric's home anymore."

I made the bed with new linens and added his fingerprint to the smart lock on the bedroom door.

"This is your home now."

At midnight, Nicholas slept on the living room couch, clutching a blanket.

I said nothing. I put Eric's custom sneakers from the entryway into a garbage bag and set out two new pairs of house slippers in Nicholas's exact size.

The next day, Emma posted a photo of the scene online.

The headline read, "Socialite Took Her Son's Killer In: Heartless or Insane?"

The comments called me cold-blooded and wished me a gruesome death.

On the fourth day after Nicholas was released on bail, disaster struck.

His mother, Maria, a 70-year-old hospital patient, was targeted by online trolls.

Someone even dug up her room number and left funeral wreaths outside the intensive care unit.

Maria was already gravely ill. The shock sent her condition into a steep decline, and she needed an immediate bone marrow transplant.

Nicholas broke down at the hospital billing desk, begging the staff to perform the procedure before payment.

I arrived with my assistant and charged the $800,000 medical bill to my card.

Alex arrived after hearing the news. When he saw the card in my hand, his face turned livid.

"Olivia, you're using Eric's trust fund to save this murderer's mother?! That's Eric's money!"

I put the receipt in my bag.

"Money sitting in an account is just numbers on a screen. Nicholas's mother is alive. A living person's life is worth more than a dead person's money."

Alex's lips trembled, but no words came out.

Nicholas rushed over and tried to shove a crumpled bank card into my hand.

"My family's debts are mine to pay. Even if my parents die, that's our fate."

I slapped him across the face.

"Is your life worth nothing? From now on, your life and your parents' lives belong to me. If I say they matter, then they matter."

When Maria woke and saw me, she burst into tears and tried to pull out her tubes.

"We got your son killed. Why would you save us? Do you want our whole family to work for you like animals for the rest of our lives, just to ease your own pain?"

I held her down while the nurse restarted the IV.

"I decide how Nicholas repays me. But if you die, he will have no reason to keep living."

To help Nicholas start over, I even tried to bring him into Thomas Group.

The head of human resources brought out Nicholas's file and gently warned me that hiring someone accused of a fatal kidnapping would frighten the staff.

In front of every senior executive, I announced that I would set up an independent charitable fund for him.

In front of every reporter, I admitted that my son's verbal abuse had driven Nicholas to lose control and kidnap him.

That day, I posted an apology from the company's official account.

"Thomas Group heir, Eric Thomas, repeatedly bullied and humiliated Nicholas, a dedicated employee, ultimately driving him to commit a crime. Thomas Group sincerely apologizes to Nicholas and his family."

Thomas Group stock went into free fall.

Everyone thought I had gone mad.

Emma called and begged me to stop.

"Eric is dead. Why are you still dragging his name through the mud?"

I hung up.

Ten minutes later, Alex seized control of the company's account.

He posted a lengthy statement promising to defend Eric's reputation, then released records showing that I had seen a psychiatrist for years.

The records showed nothing more than sleep medication prescribed for chronic insomnia, but people online took them as proof that I had been mentally unstable for years.

Alex then explained to the press, "I don't blame her. Grief has made her ill."

My supposedly "hurt" husband was defending me, making my "cold-bloodedness" seem even more incomprehensible.

The foundation was never established.

That same day, I announced that the house in Eric's name was being formally transferred to Nicholas.

They used Eric's phone to message Nicholas and tell him to come to the plant for his money. Then Alex wrapped the nylon rope around Eric's neck, making it look like he had been strangled.Eric had neither killed himself nor been kidnapped by Nicholas. His own father had smashed the back of his skull with an ashtray, then tightened a rope around his corpse and left him in the abandoned chemical plant. The moment the recording was released, social media fell silent.Alex was still struggling wildly when officers arrested him, pointing at me and screaming obscenities."Olivia! You forced me into it! If you hadn't insisted on going to the police, why would I ever have killed him! You vicious woman, you've destroyed this family!"I looked at him coldly across the cordon."Alex, I didn't force you to kill him. You killed him because if he turned himself in, he would have exposed the evidence that you had used him to launder money and embezzle company funds. The only person you have ever love

This time, no one came forward to help me straighten up.Nor did I deserve their help.Spit and wads of paper struck me from every direction. There had been a time when I handed out charity from a place of privilege.I had mistaken complicity for mercy.Alex announced on the spot that two Thomas Group subsidiaries would be sold at below-market prices to fund compensation for the victims. He cried until he nearly collapsed, and it won him a good deal of sympathy in the press."Mrs. Thomas is a victim, too. Who could have imagined her own son was a monster?"Emma came forward to testify that Eric had hidden it from everyone, even from her, his own fiancée."Eric threatened me. He said that if I ever looked into where he went, he would kill my whole family. Alex knew nothing. He's too kind."She even released a video of Eric smashing things in a rage as proof that he had subjected her to long-term psychological abuse.Public opinion began to shift again.People began saying Eric was simpl

With his mother gravely ill and urgently needing money for surgery, Nicholas had borrowed from illegal loan sharks.Emma selected him and told him that if he went to the chemical plant and played a little game, he would receive $200,000.Nicholas went. What he found was not a game. It was Eric's body. The police arrived moments later. It had all been a carefully planned trap. After I leaked a carefully worded hint about the truth to the media, public opinion reversed overnight. The people who had wept for Eric began digging frantically into his past.Angry crowds splashed red paint over his headstone and scrawled "Monster" and "He Got What He Deserved" across it.Emma burst into my office, her exquisitely made-up face twisted with rage."Olivia, have you lost your mind? If you release this, Eric will be ruined forever, and so will you!"I sat in the wide leather chair and looked at her coldly."Why should anyone cover up what he did?""So you can watch thousands of people spit on his g

Back at the house, I went down to the vault in the basement.I opened the encrypted drive I had bought for a fortune on the black market. It contained ten chilling videos. The first was filmed three years ago.A homeless man was tied to a chair.Eric sat across from him with a glass of red wine in his hand and an elegant smile."Left hand or right hand?"The man cried and begged.Eric sighed and waved a hand. The bodyguard beside him stepped forward and smashed the homeless man's right hand with a hammer.Afterward, the homeless man received $100,000 in "hush money" and was sent back to his hometown. At the time, Alex told me that Eric had accidentally hit someone with his car and that settling the matter privately was the only way to avoid a criminal record.I believed it. I even helped Alex pull strings and keep it out of the news.I thought I was protecting a child who had made a mistake. It happened nine more times after that. Each victim was marginalized and had no one to protect

The prosecutor was stunned and then his face darkened."Ma'am, do not obstruct justice! Nicholas's fingerprints were on the weapon at the scene, the ligature marks on the victim's neck matched the rope he was holding, and Nicholas himself confessed. Now you're claiming he didn't kill Eric?""The rope was around Eric's neck. That much is true."I drew a breath and laid the photographs from my folder out in a row."But he was already dead before that."What I handed over was a deliberately suppressed request for an independent forensic examination.I requested tissue samples from deep within the victim's neck and a new determination of the time of death.I built my company on medical devices. I know the best forensic specialists in the field. The day they wheeled Eric's body out, one look was enough for me to tell that something was wrong. The ligature mark from the nylon rope was deep, but there was very little subcutaneous bleeding and no clear sign that he had struggled.More importan

Nicholas broke down in front of me, his lips trembling. "That was his house. I can't accept it."I steadied him and pressed the deed into his hands."Take this house, and don't feel guilty about it."When the news broke, Alex lost his temper with me for the first time.He smashed an entire tea set and seized my wrist."Are you determined to give everything Eric owned to this killer?"I looked at him coldly."Everything Eric owned is mine now. I'll give it to whoever I please."Claiming I was mentally incompetent, Alex asked the court to issue an injunction preventing me from disposing of my personal property. On the day of the hearing, every relative testified that I had doted on my son since birth and could never have done any of this in my right mind.Emma produced Eric's diary. The day before it happened, he had written that I had agreed to come to his graduation, and that he had had an outfit made to match mine as a surprise.Alex's eyes were red as he said, "Olivia, I don't want y
