Chapter 2

Author: The Solitary Kite
When I woke up, it was already noon the next day.

Andrew stood in front of me and threw a maid’s uniform in my face. Disgust showed plainly in his eyes.

“Sophia is pregnant. She’s been in a bad mood.”

He lit a cigar. His gaze was cold.

“The previous maid was clumsy. I don’t trust her. From today on, you’ll attend to Sophia personally.”

Smoke filled the room, and his face blurred behind it.

“Serve her well. Next month, I’ll arrange your mother’s surgery.”

I froze. I could hardly believe my ears.

She was my love rival.

She carried my husband’s child, yet he wanted me to serve her.

Andrew was ruthless.

After a long silence, I gripped the maid’s uniform.

“I’ll take good care of Ms. Rossi.”

Andrew’s eyes moved slowly over my face.

He snorted before slamming the door.

That night, thunder roared, and rain poured without pause. I was kneeling on the expensive carpet in the living room, carefully wiping the red wine stain on it when Sophia’s arrogant voice called.

“Ella, get me a glass of water.”

I got up and respectfully handed her the glass with steady hands.

She did not take it. Her beautiful eyes moved slowly, looking me up and down.

“Look at you. You’re so pathetic. Do you think Andrew feels sorry for you? Listen carefully. The Donna of the Lorenzo family is going to be me. And you? You’re nothing but a dog Andrew keeps to amuse me.”

Three years ago, I would have shot her without hesitation.

But I could, alas, presently not do this.

My mother’s life was still in their hands.

When I remained silent, Sophia sneered before stepping closer.

Then there was a sharp crack. The glass had hit the floor and shattered.

Sophia let out a scream.

“Ah! My hand!”

A door upstairs burst open.

Andrew barged in wearing only his robe and saw the mess on the floor.

His face instantly turned dark. “What happened?”

Sophia collapsed into his arms. The hurt on her face was perfectly crafted.

“Andrew, Ella is still your legal wife. How can she really serve me? Besides, she spent three years in prison. She may not be used to taking care of anyone.”

Andrew quickly turned to stare at me, and his eyes looked ready to tear me apart.

“Ella, let me warn you. Stop holding on to foolish fantasies. I already showed you mercy by allowing you to stay in the estate and serve Sophia. If you keep on hurting her with your misplaced pride, you can’t blame me for what I do next.”

I stood there and almost laughed. In Andrew’s world, the truth never mattered. All that mattered was Sophia’s happiness.

He raised his hand before I could defend myself, and the slap he gave me echoed throughout the room. His palm struck my face with brutal force. My body slammed into the cabinet beside me, and the blow made my left ear ring. I fell to the floor. Broken glass cut into my palm. A sharp pain swept through me, and my vision went dark.

The smell of blood filled the air.

In the final second before I lost consciousness, I saw Andrew holding Sophia close. He looked down at me with open disgust.

“If you’re going to die, do it somewhere else. I don’t want that bad luck in this house.”

The wind in the small town of Brovence was strong.I straightened the sign outside my flower shop.I had drifted here after leaving New Yorke two years ago.No one knew me. No one knew that I had been in prison or that I had lost a child. My right leg still limped, and it made my steps uneven, but at least I no longer had to kneel for anyone.Lately, I often felt like someone was watching the shop, but I ignored it.That changed the day I closed the shop and a figure finally stepped out. The man wore a heavy black coat, but it could not hide how thin he had become. He stood in the shadow at the corner, like a child caught doing something wrong. I stopped what I was doing and looked at him.It was Andrew. Two years apart had aged him.He was just over thirty, but his temples were completely white. The eyes that had once been full of rage and arrogance were bloodshot and cautious. He just stood there, afraid to come closer. At that moment, I felt calm.“It’s cold outside,” I sa

The island wind was sharp and salty. It made my scalp sting.I worked in the kitchen and watched water bubbling in a pot before tossing in a handful of spaghetti and stirring it with a spoon. It was the garlic pasta my grandmother used to make for him. Just a little minced garlic and a drizzle of olive oil would do.Andrew leaned against the doorframe. His eyes stayed fixed on me, full of the obsession of having found something he thought he lost.I turned off the heat and plated the pasta.“Here, eat.”I set the plate in front of him and handed him a fork.Andrew took it. His hand was shaking slightly. He ate in big bites and scraped the plate clean. The steam made his eyes teary.“It still tastes the same. Ella, let’s get along from now on. No more fights, okay?”I looked at his unfocused eyes and let a faint smile appear.“Fine. No more fights.”No more fights ever. The effect came quickly.Andrew slumped onto the table. His breathing grew heavy and long.I felt nothing

A few days later, Andrew pushed the door open. He carried a thick stack of documents. They listed all his shares in casinos, real estate, and overseas assets. If I signed them, I would become the richest woman in all of New Yorke. Andrew crouched by the bed and reached for my hand.“Ella, I was a fool before. All of this is yours. From now on, my life belongs to you too.”He looked up at me. His eyes were full of regret and pleading.“Ella, I was truly insane back then. I thought that five million was the price you put on my life. I thought you wanted to kill me for money. I thought you knew it was Mark’s trap, but you still took the blame because you loved that rich kid. I was so jealous that I wanted to destroy you. That’s why I went to Sophia. I wanted you to feel what it is like to be betrayed by the one you love. I wanted you to regret it. But I never imagined that the truth would be like this.”I stared at the endless numbers on the papers. No amount of money could bring ba

Andrew left the hospital and went straight back to the estate. When he got home, Sophia was standing in front of a mirror and trying on jewelry.“Andrew, you’re back? Did you deal with that—”Before she could finish, two men in black stepped forward. They pulled her off the chair like she weighed nothing. Her expensive dress tore as she collapsed onto the carpet.“What are you doing? I’m the future Donna of this family!”Andrew walked over with a blank expression and stepped on her hand.“Ah—!”A stack of investigation reports hit her face hard. The papers cut her skin.“Open your eyes and look carefully,” Andrew said. His voice was cold.“The driver in that accident was your brother, Mark. The Rossi family is clever. You failed to get me, so you made my wife take the blame.”Sophia stared at the photos and statements scattered on the floor. Her face turned pale. She ignored the pain in her hand and crawled over to cling to Andrew’s leg.“Andrew… I didn’t know. This was all

“Ella! Don’t fall asleep! Look at me! I order you to look at me!”Andrew’s hands, steady enough to hold a gun, were shaking badly. The black Cadillac sped into the rain. He drove twelve red lights in a row.Even when they pushed me into the operating room, I could still feel his hand gripping mine. It was wet and cold.…The lights outside the operating room were harsh and blinding. Andrew collapsed onto the bench. His expensive suit was covered with dark red blood. The door opened. The doctor took off his mask and shook his head slowly.“The patient is severely malnourished. Her left ear has an old injury. The right leg fracture hasn’t healed properly. She is two months pregnant and has suffered extreme trauma and violence. Her uterus is badly damaged. The child can’t be saved. She will probably have difficulty conceiving in the future.”Andrew slid down the wall to the floor. Dried blood covered his fingers. Footsteps echoed from the end of the corridor. A Capo approached wi

Over the next two months, Andrew seemed determined to punish me for resisting him.He piled all the estate chores on me. I had to water the plants, trim the hedges, scrub the floors, and even pick up Sophia’s dog’s poop myself. At first, Sophia held back a little with her cruelty. But since Andrew kept indulging her, she quickly realized that I meant nothing to him, so she started tormenting me without limits. If a cup in the living room was found empty, she would order someone to slap me fifty times. If a rose petal fell from a flowerbed, she made me kneel and apologize to the flowers. If dust from the carpet got on her shoes, she forced me to kneel on the stone floor for three full days.No matter what happened, Andrew would just smile and let it pass. The last punishment was over me giving her dog a bit less food than usual, and she got mad.“Andrew, didn’t Ella used to live in the slums of Booklyn?“Why don’t we send her back there to reflect? Maybe that place will help her
