Chapter 8

Autor: Lunar Flame
Aaron and Vanessa parted on bitter terms.

His mood sank, so he pulled the blanket over his head and drifted into an uneasy sleep.

That afternoon, Maya came in to apply medication to Aaron’s skin and woke him.

She told him to keep an eye on the IV bag while she went to start another infusion in a different room and explained that she could not watch it constantly.

Aaron grunted and asked her to raise the head of his bed.

Before leaving, Maya hesitated before asking, “One of my coworkers said a beautiful woman came to see you at noon. She was crying when she left. Who was she?”

“That’s none of your business.”

Aaron never expected Vanessa to cry.

After Maya left, he thought for a while before messaging Vanessa.

He told her that he had only informed Edward and Diane about his illness and that Edward was probably the one who convinced the Eastbridge Geological Survey to move its accounts.

Vanessa replied by calling him selfish. She accused him of telling others when she had not even told her parents.

Aaron disagreed with her but did not continue the conversation.

Two days later, Aaron reviewed his treatment records and realized that a month had passed since his admission.

Rebecca came to examine him that morning and brought his latest test results. His condition remained poor. His immune system had not recovered, and the virus continued to attack his body.

The treatment was not working, so they could only try another approach.

Aaron was already prepared for that possibility. AIDS had no miracle cure, and he knew treatment would be difficult. He simply never expected it to be so agonizing.

Rebecca considered the drug resistance developing in Aaron’s body.

Until they obtained the new medication, they could only stop his current antiretroviral treatment.

She warned him not to leave the hospital under any circumstances.

With his immune system so weak, any bacteria or virus outside could pose a fatal threat.

The medication caused an itchy, painful drug rash.

Stopping the medication brought out another rash, which was just as unbearable.

Complications followed as well.

One bout of pneumonia left him with a persistent high fever and severe difficulty breathing.

Yet Aaron survived every setback. He remained stubbornly alive.

Before he knew it, forty days had passed since his admission.

That day, Aaron was finally able to resume treatment. He felt slightly more energetic, and the rash on his body began to fade, but the lesions on his face stubbornly remained.

With nothing else to do, he read a book.

Then the hospital room door was suddenly kicked open, and a tall, muscular young man rushed inside.

Without saying a word, he grabbed a stool from the floor and swung it at Aaron’s head.

Aaron raised his arm to block the blow. The stool struck with such force that his arm felt as though it had been broken. His skin split open, and blood poured from the wound.

“You bastard! I’m warning you! Stay away from my cousin!”

The young man shouted angrily.

Aaron took a moment to recover, then his temper flared. “Screw you! If I weren’t sick, I’d make you regret this! You’d better give me an explanation, or you’ll be sorry!”

“Don’t go near him! You could catch it!”

A middle-aged woman entered from outside.

She wore a mask and gloves, fully covered for protection, and pulled the young man back.

Aaron glared at her. “And who are you?”

The woman asked, “Are you, Aaron Jones?”

“Yes! I’m Aaron Jones, and I’ve got nothing to hide!”

“Then we came to the right room. Maya Brooks is my daughter! Sleep with any woman you want, but you should never have gone after my daughter!”

“Maya… Are you blind? Just look at me! Do I look like I’m in any condition to be chasing women?”

When Aaron heard that the middle-aged woman was Maya’s mother, most of his anger faded.

For the past forty days, Maya had been one of the nurses caring for him.

She often came by to talk with him as well, making her the kindest person in the hospital.

At that exact moment, Maya came rushing into the room.

When she saw what was happening, she shouted at her mother, “Have you lost your mind? He’s a patient! How could you hit him? Are you trying to kill him?”

The woman replied coldly, “You’re the one who’s lost your mind! You care more about a man with AIDS than you ever care about me. You never show me an ounce of respect.

“I must have raised the most ungrateful daughter in the world!

“So, here’s your choice: come home with me and leave this hospital right now, or he leaves this hospital too, and I’ll make sure he doesn’t survive until tomorrow.”

Natalie spent the entire weekend at Aaron’s bedside, watching helplessly as he lay unconscious on a ventilator. Tears streamed down her face without pause. His breathing was so faint that it could stop at any moment. His life seemed to hang by a thread.Susan watched from the side and wondered what made Aaron so irresistible. His wife was beautiful and elegant, yet even after contracting such a terrible disease, he still managed to make young women fall hopelessly for him. First Maya, and now Natalie. Had he saved the world in another life?Vanessa arrived that evening. The moment she saw Natalie sitting beside Aaron’s bed, her expression darkened.Natalie wiped away her tears. “What are you doing here?”Vanessa scoffed. “Aaron is my husband. Do I need to explain why I came to see him? You, on the other hand, have no connection to my husband. “Isn’t your concern for him crossing a line? Interfering in another couple’s marriage and acting as the other woman is disgraceful. You’re not

When Aaron saw the medical staff enter, he knew it was time for another blood-filtration treatment, so he told Natalie to go home first. After Rebecca examined him, he asked, “Have you heard anything from the Institute of Virology?”“I’ll be honest with you. The samples they received from your body lost their viral activity too quickly, so they couldn’t complete the experiments. I’ve already applied for assistance from a Biosafety Level 4 laboratory.”“Then we’ll have to wait.”Aaron knew there was no escaping his fate as a human test subject. Two days passed. That afternoon, Aaron fought back his nausea and forced himself to finish as much of his meal as possible. Then he held on to the hospital bed and walked around to help his body digest the food. The door opened, and Edward entered with the director of the Geological Survey.“Aaron, I came to see you. I’ve been terribly busy these past few weeks and couldn’t get away. I’m sorry I didn’t visit sooner.”The director arrived with a

In the middle of the night, Aaron woke from a terrible nightmare and began convulsing. His body swung between chills and fever, tormenting him for a long time before he finally fell asleep again. He had no idea how long he slept when he heard someone crying beside him. He opened his eyes and saw Natalie.“Why are you here again?”Aaron’s voice sounded dry and strained. Natalie wiped away her tears, brought him some warm water, and helped him sit up so he could soothe his throat.“Why has your condition gotten worse? Are the medications no longer working? Should we transfer you to another hospital? I could even take you overseas for treatment.”“This disease would be the same wherever I went. How long I live is up to fate. I’ve accepted it. I’ll keep treating it as long as treatment helps. If it stops working, then I’ll die. You haven’t answered me, though. It isn’t the weekend, so why are you here?”“I don’t have any classes today, so I came to see you. My parents are worried too, bu

Vanessa was still holding Aaron’s face and staring at him without making another move. “Let go already!” Aaron demanded.“Honestly, you just made me so emotional that I really wanted to kiss you, but I couldn’t find a patch of skin that wasn’t covered in a rash!”A flicker of sadness crossed Vanessa’s eyes. She released him, checked the time, and said, “I have a client to visit and a payment to chase down, so I can’t stay.”She picked up her purse and walked a few steps before adding, “Tell Owen to move his company’s accounts to my bank. He should introduce some of his friends to me too. Business should stay within the family, right?”Aaron gave a quiet laugh. After Vanessa left, he could not calm his thoughts or concentrate on his book. He lay there lost in thought until he eventually fell asleep. When he woke again, it was already seven or eight in the evening. He ate a little, felt unwell, and went back to sleep. The next morning, after finishing his IV treatment, Aaron got out of

William was Aaron’s father-in-law. Vanessa mentioning him now meant the mining project was genuinely in trouble.Aaron gave a bitter laugh. “I can’t even find peace in this condition.”He sighed and tried to recall the details. “I only worked on part of that project. Victor Lawson’s team took over later, so I don’t know what happened afterward. Leave the materials here. I’ll look through them and see what I can figure out.”Vanessa nodded. At least they had a solution now. Aaron might be sick, but his abilities were beyond question. She continued, “A man named Owen Doyle came to ask about your condition. He clearly cares about you. “I looked into him and found that his company has more than $200 million in its accounts. How do you know someone like that without ever introducing him to me?”“He’s not my friend.”“Isn’t he? He’s investigating how you contracted HIV. He even said that whoever infected you would see their entire family infected in return. That’s loyalty, isn’t it?”Aaro

Rebecca put the book aside and examined Aaron. “Your friend Owen is quite something. A grown man crying like that, with such genuine emotion… It’s remarkable. How did the two of you become such close friends?”“We’re not friends. He’s just an unlucky mining businessman.”“But he said you saved him and his entire family. He wouldn’t be where he is today without you.”“That was a long time ago. He had already failed three projects in a row, spending money on three mines that yielded nothing. “He financed everything with bank loans, so he was in an even worse position than simply losing his investment. His company couldn’t make payroll, and his employees were ready to tear him apart. He was completely trapped. “One day, I arrived at work and happened to see him helping an elderly woman cross the street. I figured he wasn’t a bad person, so I introduced him to a promising project and connected him with a bank manager. “He secured a loan, found a deposit, and turned his life around. Late
