Chapter 4

Author: Angel's City
I was about to inject myself with medication to prevent a miscarriage.

The shock wave hurled me off my feet.

I slammed into a cold steel surgical cabinet, and pain tore through my back as if something had cracked.

Bang! Bang! Automatic rifle fire raked the clinic's exterior.

The Salvatore family's hitmen had finally made their move.

I curled up under the operating table, both hands clamped over my stomach.

Then something warm began to trickle down the inside of my thigh, slow and unstoppable.

Blood.

Shaking all over, I fumbled for my phone and called Cassius. Calling him was the only chance I had to save my baby.

The call connected.

"Cassius..." I gasped, my voice distorted by pain and terror. "The clinic's under attack... I'm bleeding. Help me..."

A soft laugh answered me. Mia's.

"Cassius is driving. I've got his phone."

"Give him the phone..." I gritted my teeth as the blood ran down my legs. "Mia, I'm pregnant! Put Cassius on..."

"Oh, but Cassius is taking me shopping for a wedding dress. We don't feel like turning back right now," Mia said sweetly. Then she suddenly screamed. "Cassius! Something's ticking under the car! Is it a bomb?"

My breath stopped.

"Sierra, stay at the clinic." Cassius's voice came over the line, cold and ruthlessly calm. "Mia's car might be rigged with a bomb. Whatever it is, it'll have to wait until I get back."

"Cassius, I'm pregnant! I'm bleeding so much..." I sobbed and screamed into the phone, clutching at my last lifeline.

"Don't you dare lie to me just to get your way, not now!" he snapped, cutting me off. There was none of his old patience or tenderness in his voice. "You're a trained surgeon. Take care of yourself!"

Beep... beep... beep...

The call went dead.

I stared at the words "Call Ended" on the screen. Suddenly, the whole world went terrifyingly quiet.

Outside, the hitmen had already breached the first steel door.

He'd left me bleeding and alone against a crew of armed killers so he could save Mia. She was sitting in a bulletproof car wearing a bulletproof necklace.

I bit my lip until it bled, forcing myself to stay conscious.

I grabbed a sharp scalpel and crawled with difficulty through the clinic's underground ventilation ducts, slipping through a blind spot in the hitmen's perimeter.

By the time I sped toward the downtown hospital in my old backup sedan, I could feel my life draining out of me bit by bit.

On a cold operating table in the ER, I lost the tiny life that had been with me for ten weeks.

The pain made me wish I were dead.

"I'm so sorry. You lost too much blood. We couldn't save the baby."

I stared blankly at the surgical lights overhead, unable to shed a single tear. It felt as though my heart had been torn apart along with the life I'd just lost.

Before dawn, still weak from the ordeal, I dragged myself back to the empty hillside villa.

News reports about the Vitelli family's bomb-disposal operation downtown were everywhere. The reports said there had never been a bomb under the car, yet Cassius had shut down three entire blocks to protect Mia.

I went into the study and neatly laid the finalized divorce decree and a bloodstained medical report confirming my miscarriage on his large black walnut desk.

He'd said I was lying, hadn't he? Then he needed to see what he'd killed.

The divorce was now final.

I walked out the front door with my suitcase and took a cab to the airport.

I pulled my trench coat tighter and watched the city lights recede behind me.

Goodbye, Cassius.

You no longer had a personal doctor in this city, or a wife who would always be waiting right where you left her.

Sierra’s POVCassius stood on the terrace, staring blankly ahead. He didn't try to stop me again. The next day, Cassius disappeared from Zurich as suddenly as he had appeared. The only traces he left were the institute's new equipment and the unused investment funds in its account.Alexander rushed back from New York. He didn't ask any questions. He simply secured new funding for me and invited me to dinner."Sierra, there's an international surgical forum in Paris in three months. Would you like to go with me?" Alexander smiled, genuine hope shining in his blue eyes.I looked at him, and for the first time in a year, I felt myself relax. "Yes."Another three months passed. At the forum in Paris, I gave a talk on the latest advances in my field and received a standing ovation. Alexander sat in the front row, his eyes full of pride and love as he watched me.After I stepped down from the podium, my phone buzzed with a news alert from New York."Breaking News: Vitelli Family's Money-Laun

Sierra’s POVCassius didn't approach me again. He was patient and calculating, so he changed tactics.Over the next three days, the research center underwent a series of changes. An anonymous donation of 50 million euros suddenly appeared in the hospital's account.Next, ten pieces of state-of-the-art medical equipment were flown directly to the hospital, with explicit instructions that they be assigned to my department.Every morning when I arrived at my office, a warm oat milk latte waited on my desk. Back at the clinic, it was the only drink he'd let me have after I'd spent all night operating.Everyone knew who was behind it all. After that day, Cassius stopped confronting me. Instead, he relied on the methods he knew best: throwing money around, applying pressure, and flaunting his power. His message was clear: he still controlled everything.I took all of it.Those machines could save many lives. I had no reason to turn them down over a personal grudge. On Friday evening, I had j

Sierra’s POVZurich, Switzerland.Wearing a camel cashmere coat and carrying two hot coffees, I hurried along the tree-lined path outside the medical research center at ETH Zurich.December's first snow had just fallen in Zurich, and the air was cold and clean."Sierra, you haven't fully recovered yet. Be careful not to slip."A warm voice called from behind me. Alexander Keller, dressed in a charcoal trench coat, caught up to me in a few long strides and took one of the coffees as if it were the most natural thing in the world. He was the largest investor in one of Europe's leading medical research centers. He was also the only person who had reached out to help me since I arrived in Switzerland.I'd arrived in Europe a week earlier, still weak from the miscarriage. After reading my published research papers, Alexander had made an exception and offered me a place on his team. He'd also arranged for me to receive the best medical care available while I recovered. He never pried into my

Cassius’s POV"The Salvatore family caused the explosion that day, but the clinic's location had been sent to them from Ms. Russo's device."Cold sweat covered Luca's forehead."There was never a bomb under Ms. Russo's car. She bribed two of our bodyguards to plant a mechanical timer that made a ticking sound beneath it."Luca swallowed, and his voice shook. "When the Donna called you for help, Ms. Russo secretly activated a signal jammer. That's why the call dropped."Crack.The whiskey glass shattered in Cassius's hand.Sharp shards dug into his palm, and blood dripped between his fingers onto the black walnut desk. He seemed not to feel it.Sierra's desperate cry on the phone rang in his ears again. "Cassius, I'm pregnant! I'm bleeding so much..."And what had he been doing? He had sat in an armored car and turned his back on his wife as she begged for help, all because of a fake ticking sound. He'd killed his only child and driven the wife who had always been calm and strong to the

Cassius’s POVEarly the next morning, Cassius met Luca in the study.Luca looked terrible. He was holding a thick manila envelope, and a fine sheen of cold sweat covered his forehead."Don..." Luca's voice trembled as he set the envelope on the wide desk.Cassius didn't look at it. He took a sip of coffee. "Did you deal with the doctor who faked the record?" he asked coldly.Luca swallowed and forced out the words. "Don... the record is real."Cassius froze, his coffee cup halfway to his mouth."What did you say?"Luca took a deep breath and emptied the envelope onto the desk.Inside was a thick stack of medical records, a few ER photos, and a flash drive containing security footage."We reviewed the downtown hospital's security footage and checked the blood bank records." Luca lowered his head, unable to meet Cassius's eyes. "The Donna... she was brought into the ER last night. She'd lost more than three pints of blood and was already in shock when they admitted her. The baby... they

Cassius’s POVThe Vitelli family's bomb experts spent three hours searching the Rolls-Royce inside and out. They checked it three times. There was no bomb. The supposed ticking had come from an alarm clock someone had placed under the car. No one knew who had put it there.Cassius stood outside the cordon, the night wind tugging at his black coat. He listened to Luca's report without a flicker of expression."Pack it up," he ordered calmly.Mia walked over, wrapped in a thick cashmere shawl. Don't go out for a few days." His voice was low and left no room for argument."But you...""I have something to take care of."He didn't look at Mia again. He turned an
