Chapter 3

Autor: Q.J.H
The group chat with Julian’s childhood friends was buzzing all night.

Someone posted a photo of the racetrack. Julian’s black sports car was parked at the top of the mountain.

He was leaning against the driver’s door with a gorgeous girl in his arms, looking effortlessly carefree.

The sharp lines of his profile were highlighted by the headlights.

The rest of the group immediately exploded:

[Holy shit, Julian actually took a girl racing? He never even took Nora!]

[Did he and Nora get into a fight?]

[Yeah, weren’t they fine at the last get-together?]

I stared at the screen and was about to leave the group.

Then Julian suddenly sent a message.

[Don’t make assumptions. Nora’s just my little sister.]

A second later, a notification appeared.

Madison Carter has joined the group.

[Say hi to your new sister-in-law.]

Julian’s words were short.

But they felt like a dull knife cutting into my flesh—not sharp enough to kill, just painful enough to linger.

By the time I came back to my senses, the chat was already flooded with flattery and congratulations for Madison.

I expressionlessly typed:

[That’s great. You two make a good match. Wishing you both the best.]

Then I shoved my phone under my pillow.

Even though I’d already decided to cut ties with him, my heart still ached faintly.

It was like an old wound that had already scabbed over. It wouldn’t bleed anymore, but the soreness remained whenever someone accidentally brushed against it.

Madison came back very late.

She was carrying a huge bouquet of flowers.

Her lips were swollen, her cheeks flushed, and her shirt collar was slightly disheveled, with faint reddish marks visible along her collarbone.

She shyly covered her face and spun around the dorm room.

“Julian confessed to me... and I said yes.”

My roommates immediately crowded around her, talking over one another.

“Oh my God! That’s Julian Cross! He’s the most popular guy at the college next door. The girls who chase after him could probably circle the track three times!”

“Hasn’t he never publicly dated anyone? He must really love you!”

“He said I was his first love...”

Madison’s voice was soft and sweet, but she couldn’t hide the smugness in her tone.

Another small corner of my heart crumbled.

Madison suddenly turned toward me.

Her voice was cautious and tentative.

“Nora, so you weren’t actually Julian’s relative? I only saw everyone talking about it in the group after I said yes...They said you liked him.”

She pressed her lips together and hesitated.

“Nora, I’m sorry. If you’re upset about it, I can—”

“It’s nothing.”

I cut her off and forced a casual smile.

“They were just joking around.”

Madison looked at me, clearly unconvinced.

I paused before adding,

“I already have someone I like.”

“Who? Who?”

My roommates immediately erupted.

“I always knew you weren’t single! Who is he?”

Just then, the phone beside me lit up.

The campus forum had pushed a notification: The annual Campus Heartthrob rankings are out.

The winner was no surprise.

The photo showed a guy in a black hoodie, one hand in his pocket as he leaned against the hallway of an academic building.

His eyes were sharp and rebellious, and his jawline was strikingly defined.

The comments were filled with screaming fangirls.

[Declan Sterling is going to be the death of me!]

[That face could keep me obsessed for a year!]

If Julian was my childhood sweetheart—the boy I’d grown up with and loved from a young age—then Declan Sterling was my lifelong rival.

It started in kindergarten when we fought over the best slide.

In elementary school, we competed for class president.

In middle school, we battled for the top spot in our grade.

In high school, we fought over the student council presidency.

For more than a decade, we’d been at each other’s throats. Whenever we met, we’d argue. Neither of us had ever been willing to back down.

I’d spent the past two years too busy dating Julian to bother with Declan, which was probably the only reason things had finally calmed down.

“That one.”

I casually pointed at the screen.

“I’ve had a crush on Declan Sterling for years.”

After our wedding, I went back to the Sterling family estate with Declan, where he personally baked me a batch of cookies. He had just finished baking a tray, and the kitchen was filled with the sweet scent of butter and vanilla. He walked out with a little flour still dusting his clothes. When he saw me curled up on the couch, half asleep, he leaned down to kiss my forehead and gently pulled the blanket higher around me.I looked up at him.Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind him, outlining his figure in a soft golden glow.Even the slight furrow between his brows, a permanent feature after all these years, looked gentle.Suddenly, I felt playful.I slipped barefoot off the couch and walked over to the bookcase.Crouching down, I pulled out a tin box covered in a thin layer of dust.It was packed to the brim. There was nothing valuable inside.Just the crooked paper cranes I’d folded absentmindedly in elementary school. The candy wrappers I’d casua

I went straight home. After I told my parents everything, they immediately called the Cross family.“Our daughter will not be treated this way.”The next morning, Cross Group’s stock hit its daily limit down at market open and stayed there for three straight days.Julian’s grandfather personally visited both my family and the Sterlings.I had no idea what they discussed, but that very afternoon, Julian was released from custody. My father immediately ordered everyone to terminate all business dealings with Cross Group. My mother had afternoon coffee with Declan’s mother, who smiled and said, “When it comes to the children, our job as parents is simply to make sure they have a safety net.”Julian’s position as the heir to the Cross family became increasingly unstable. The friends who had once called him their brother now avoided him whenever they saw him, afraid that even being associated with him would bring them trouble.Madison was the most hysterical of all.First, she co

I stood frozen, unable to move.Julian lay sprawled on the ground, his face smeared with blood and dirt, looking like a broken heap.Declan stood over him, blood still dripping from his knuckles. He turned around. The fury that had filled his eyes moments ago vanished the instant he looked at me, replaced by an unmistakable softness. He held out his hand, palm up.“Nora, don’t be scared. I’m here.”I stumbled forward and buried my face against his chest. Then I burst into tears. All the hurt, the fear that came after the shock, and the sickening realization that I’d been deceived finally poured out with my tears against his chest. When the police arrived, Declan didn’t resist. Before leaving, he gently squeezed my hand and reassured me.“Don’t worry. Everything will be okay.”I went to the hospital.Julian had a splint strapped across his nose, and his face was so swollen it was barely recognizable. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up.“Nora, those things I said earlier

I spent more than two weeks recovering at Declan’s place. The day I was finally healed, he drove me back to campus. The moment the car stopped outside the school gates, Declan helped me out.A gust of wind suddenly swept toward us.Julian practically shoved Declan aside and grabbed my wrist, squeezing hard enough to make the recently healed joint ache. His other fist was already flying toward Declan’s face.“Declan! Bros before hoes? Nora is my girlfriend!”Declan turned his head and dodged the punch, raising an arm to block it.He stared at Julian, his voice cold and low.“You two broke up.”“You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about!”Julian roared, his eyes bloodshot.“Nora is mine! You think she actually likes you? She’s only using you to get back at me!”I yanked my wrist free.“Julian, haven’t you had enough? What part of ‘it’s over’ don’t you understand?”“Nora, Madison and I were just fooling around. You promised we’d be together forever...”Declan steppe

When I woke up the next morning, daylight had already filtered through the sheer curtains.I tried to move, but my ankle was still sore. Before I could struggle into a sitting position, Declan heard the movement and came into the bedroom. He bent down and scooped me into his arms.“Go freshen up first.”I felt a little embarrassed, but I let him carry me without resisting. At first, his attentiveness made me uncomfortable, but I quickly got used to it.When I brushed my teeth, the toothbrush he handed me already had toothpaste on it.At breakfast, the table was filled with all my favorite foods—fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon, and a bowl of warm oatmeal topped with fresh berries. While I recovered, I took a leave of absence from school.Declan was close to graduation and didn’t need to be on campus often, so he stayed by my side almost constantly. We spent our days curled up together in the apartment. He watched old, cheesy movies with me, letting me settle into whatever posi

Declan insisted on taking me home.“Since you agreed to give us a chance, you have to allow me to prove I’m worthy of being your boyfriend.”He bent down and, without giving me a chance to protest, lifted me out of the hospital bed.I had scrapes all over my body, and my ankle was badly swollen. There was no way I could make it back to the dorm.I also didn’t want to go home and let my family see me in such a miserable state, only to worry them.Besides—Even though Declan and I had been bitter rivals for over a decade, always butting heads and refusing to back down, deep down, I knew he was someone I could trust completely. When we were little, the three of us used to spend almost all our time together.Declan had always been even more handsome than Julian, with such refined features that he looked like he had been sculpted by an AI.I was too young to know any better back then. I even insisted that I wanted to marry Declan someday. But as he grew older, Declan became increa
