Chapter 5

Autor: Q.J.H
I deleted everything related to Julian from my phone and cloud storage.

Every gift he’d given me over the years went into a huge cardboard box.

I called a courier and had the entire box delivered straight to the Cross family home.

From then on, I stopped looking up anything related to him.

I thought that was probably the end of it.

Unfortunately, Madison still lived in the dorm with me.

She kept bringing him up, always talking about how thoughtful he was and how well he knew how to make someone feel loved.

Julian really was good at loving people.

When he wanted to, he could make any girl drown in his affection.

That affection just happened to have expired when it came to me.

On Valentine’s Day, Madison suggested that we all go out for dinner.

It was a tradition among college roommates that whenever someone got a boyfriend, she had to treat everyone to a meal.

But Julian had never once met my roommates as my boyfriend.

I made an excuse about having a headache and said I didn’t want to go.

Madison wouldn’t let it go. She clung to my arm and wheedled, “Come on, come on. It’s just dinner. Stay for a while. Julian can drive you back afterward.”

I was practically dragged to an expensive restaurant.

Throughout the entire meal, Julian didn’t look at me once.

He peeled shrimp for Madison and carefully picked the strips of ginger out of her crab meat.

Amid our roommates’ teasing, he calmly shared a toast with Madison, feeding her cake mouth-to-mouth.

When cream smeared across the corner of her lips, he leaned down and gently kissed it away.

I lowered my head and mechanically cut into the steak on my plate.

Once.

Twice.

Again and again.

From the corner of my eye, I noticed Julian’s jaw growing tighter and his expression becoming increasingly grim.

Perhaps my complete indifference had taken all the fun out of it for him.

After dinner, all my roommates had their boyfriends with them, so none of them planned to return to the dorm.

In the bustling restaurant entrance, I was the only one left alone.

Julian hesitated before walking over.

His voice was awkward.

“...Do you want me to drive you back?”

He probably still thought I was the same girl I’d always been.

The kind who would obediently follow him as long as he offered me the slightest bit of sweetness, no matter how badly he’d hurt me.

Before I could answer, Madison nestled against him.

“Julian, I think I drank too much. I’m so dizzy...Stay with me for a while.”

I curled my lips into a smile.

“No need. Someone’s picking me up.”

Julian’s expression immediately turned cold.

“Suit yourself.”

With that, he put an arm around Madison and walked straight toward the sports car parked by the curb.

Then they drove away.

I stood there as the night breeze swept over me, leaving a dull ache at my temples.

I didn’t feel like calling a cab, so I walked aimlessly along the sidewalk.

When I reached the campus entrance, an electric scooter suddenly came barreling toward me from the wrong direction.

I didn’t have time to dodge.

It slammed into me, sending me crashing to the ground.

The rider cursed under his breath, twisted the throttle, and disappeared into the darkness.

Pain spread through my body.

My fingers moved faster than my mind. Instinctively, I pressed the speed-dial button on my phone.

It rang four times.

On the fifth ring, the call was disconnected.

The dead tone sounded again and again, pounding against my ears.

I held the phone in my hand, sitting stunned on the deserted street.

It was only then that I realized—

The number I’d called belonged to Julian.

The person who used to answer on the first ring and come running no matter how late it was...

He wasn’t coming anymore.

I didn’t cry.

I didn’t call a second time.

I forced myself to my feet and dialed emergency services.

At the hospital, the doctor cleaned and dressed my wounds and gave me a tetanus shot.

I lay on the hospital bed, staring blankly at the IV drip.

Suddenly, the door swung open.

A tall figure stood in the doorway, backlit by the hallway lights.

His broad frame blocked out almost all the light behind him.

The moment I saw who it was, I forgot how to breathe.

I stared at him as he walked toward me, his crisp cedar scent washing over me and enveloping me completely.

“Nora Bennett, aren’t you supposed to be so tough?

“Why did you let yourself end up looking like this?”

After our wedding, I went back to the Sterling family estate with Declan, where he personally baked me a batch of cookies. He had just finished baking a tray, and the kitchen was filled with the sweet scent of butter and vanilla. He walked out with a little flour still dusting his clothes. When he saw me curled up on the couch, half asleep, he leaned down to kiss my forehead and gently pulled the blanket higher around me.I looked up at him.Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind him, outlining his figure in a soft golden glow.Even the slight furrow between his brows, a permanent feature after all these years, looked gentle.Suddenly, I felt playful.I slipped barefoot off the couch and walked over to the bookcase.Crouching down, I pulled out a tin box covered in a thin layer of dust.It was packed to the brim. There was nothing valuable inside.Just the crooked paper cranes I’d folded absentmindedly in elementary school. The candy wrappers I’d casua

I went straight home. After I told my parents everything, they immediately called the Cross family.“Our daughter will not be treated this way.”The next morning, Cross Group’s stock hit its daily limit down at market open and stayed there for three straight days.Julian’s grandfather personally visited both my family and the Sterlings.I had no idea what they discussed, but that very afternoon, Julian was released from custody. My father immediately ordered everyone to terminate all business dealings with Cross Group. My mother had afternoon coffee with Declan’s mother, who smiled and said, “When it comes to the children, our job as parents is simply to make sure they have a safety net.”Julian’s position as the heir to the Cross family became increasingly unstable. The friends who had once called him their brother now avoided him whenever they saw him, afraid that even being associated with him would bring them trouble.Madison was the most hysterical of all.First, she co

I stood frozen, unable to move.Julian lay sprawled on the ground, his face smeared with blood and dirt, looking like a broken heap.Declan stood over him, blood still dripping from his knuckles. He turned around. The fury that had filled his eyes moments ago vanished the instant he looked at me, replaced by an unmistakable softness. He held out his hand, palm up.“Nora, don’t be scared. I’m here.”I stumbled forward and buried my face against his chest. Then I burst into tears. All the hurt, the fear that came after the shock, and the sickening realization that I’d been deceived finally poured out with my tears against his chest. When the police arrived, Declan didn’t resist. Before leaving, he gently squeezed my hand and reassured me.“Don’t worry. Everything will be okay.”I went to the hospital.Julian had a splint strapped across his nose, and his face was so swollen it was barely recognizable. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up.“Nora, those things I said earlier

I spent more than two weeks recovering at Declan’s place. The day I was finally healed, he drove me back to campus. The moment the car stopped outside the school gates, Declan helped me out.A gust of wind suddenly swept toward us.Julian practically shoved Declan aside and grabbed my wrist, squeezing hard enough to make the recently healed joint ache. His other fist was already flying toward Declan’s face.“Declan! Bros before hoes? Nora is my girlfriend!”Declan turned his head and dodged the punch, raising an arm to block it.He stared at Julian, his voice cold and low.“You two broke up.”“You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about!”Julian roared, his eyes bloodshot.“Nora is mine! You think she actually likes you? She’s only using you to get back at me!”I yanked my wrist free.“Julian, haven’t you had enough? What part of ‘it’s over’ don’t you understand?”“Nora, Madison and I were just fooling around. You promised we’d be together forever...”Declan steppe

When I woke up the next morning, daylight had already filtered through the sheer curtains.I tried to move, but my ankle was still sore. Before I could struggle into a sitting position, Declan heard the movement and came into the bedroom. He bent down and scooped me into his arms.“Go freshen up first.”I felt a little embarrassed, but I let him carry me without resisting. At first, his attentiveness made me uncomfortable, but I quickly got used to it.When I brushed my teeth, the toothbrush he handed me already had toothpaste on it.At breakfast, the table was filled with all my favorite foods—fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon, and a bowl of warm oatmeal topped with fresh berries. While I recovered, I took a leave of absence from school.Declan was close to graduation and didn’t need to be on campus often, so he stayed by my side almost constantly. We spent our days curled up together in the apartment. He watched old, cheesy movies with me, letting me settle into whatever posi

Declan insisted on taking me home.“Since you agreed to give us a chance, you have to allow me to prove I’m worthy of being your boyfriend.”He bent down and, without giving me a chance to protest, lifted me out of the hospital bed.I had scrapes all over my body, and my ankle was badly swollen. There was no way I could make it back to the dorm.I also didn’t want to go home and let my family see me in such a miserable state, only to worry them.Besides—Even though Declan and I had been bitter rivals for over a decade, always butting heads and refusing to back down, deep down, I knew he was someone I could trust completely. When we were little, the three of us used to spend almost all our time together.Declan had always been even more handsome than Julian, with such refined features that he looked like he had been sculpted by an AI.I was too young to know any better back then. I even insisted that I wanted to marry Declan someday. But as he grew older, Declan became increa
