On my eighteenth birthday, I finally got the first key that had ever belonged to me. The mattress, desk, space heater, and blinds in my bedroom had all been paid for with tips from three summers of waiting tables at a restaurant by the harbor. Then my brother brought his fiancée home for Christmas. To impress her, my parents dumped my clothes in the basement and announced that my room would become the newlyweds' room after the wedding. Dad said, “Madison’s never stayed with us before, and your room gets the best light. Sleeping in the basement for a few nights won’t kill you.” My married sister leaned against the kitchen island with a nasty little smile. “Quit acting like somebody stole your crown. You’ve always been good at turning nothing into the end of the world.” Mom reminded me that Carter’s marriage mattered to the whole family. My only job was to keep my mouth shut and not ruin Christmas. The truth was, it had never been about one room. It was about the fact that, to them, I had never really belonged in that house. I finally stopped trying.

Chapter 1

I stood in the entryway with one hand on my suitcase while my entire family watched me like I was a rerun of a cheap reality show.

My sister, Vanessa, had settled into the cream armchair I’d bought with my own tips. A mug of spiked cider sat by her feet. She looked me up and down, then let a smirk curl across her face.

“What’s this? Grayhaven’s little princess running away from home again?”

Dad shoved another log into the fireplace without turning around. “You’re dragging a suitcase through the house because we asked you to let your future sister-in-law have the comfortable room?”

Mom poked her head out of the kitchen and lowered her voice. “It’s Christmas Eve, Evelyn. The Blakes are coming to lunch tomorrow, so don’t embarrass all of us.”

Not one of them asked why all my clothes had been stuffed into black trash bags and dumped at the top of the basement stairs. No one cared that my sketchbook had been bent in half or that my scholarship paperwork was soaked in somebody’s spilled coffee.

Vanessa took a sip of cider. “There’s a cot downstairs, and I’m pretty sure the old sleeping bag is still in the closet. You’re always bragging about how independent you are. Here’s your chance to prove it.”

When she laughed, my parents joined in.

They were waiting for me to cry, make another empty threat, and quietly drag my suitcase back where it belonged.

I righted the suitcase and met their eyes. “I won’t be coming home for Christmas again. You can stop calling every December to ask.”

Vanessa laughed even louder. “How many times have we heard that one? You said the same thing at Thanksgiving last year, and then you came crawling back for the winter coat Mom bought you.”

“That was your old coat. You outgrew it, so Mom passed it down to me. Your name was still on the tag.”

Her smile slipped.

I kept my voice level. “Meanwhile, you’ve been married for two years and still spend four nights a week here. But I’m the one you call dependent?”

The living room went dead quiet.

Vanessa’s marriage had been running on appearances for months. Daniel had moved into the guest room half a year ago. Everyone in Grayhaven knew; no one had the guts to say it to her face.

Dad finally turned around. “What the hell did you just say?”

“I’m talking to her the way she talks to me.”

Vanessa’s eyes went shiny on cue as she looked at him. “Dad, I was joking. Why does she always have to go for the throat?”

“Apologize to your sister,” he ordered.

“She started it.”

“She’s your older sister.”

“So she gets to say whatever she wants, and I’m not allowed to answer?”

Color climbed up Dad’s neck. He never minded being wrong. What he couldn’t stand was being cornered into admitting it.

“Because I’m your father.” He crossed the room toward me. “If I tell you to apologize, you apologize.”

“No.” I didn’t raise my voice, but he heard me perfectly.

His palm cracked against the side of my head.

My face snapped sideways, and a high, vicious ringing filled my ear. The suitcase slipped from my hand and struck the wooden cabinet by the door.

Mom barely frowned. “See? You could’ve avoided that if you’d listened the first time.”

Vanessa dropped her gaze, but not fast enough to hide the satisfaction at the corner of her mouth.

The lock turned behind me.

My brother, Carter, pushed open the front door with Madison Blake beside him in a white cashmere coat.

Mom’s irritation vanished so fast it might never have existed. In its place came a bright, eager smile.
